atomizers better staying power than splash bottles (?)

In my experience colognes applied with an atomizer have a better staying power than those coming out of a splash bottle. Why is this? I'd like to understand the chemistry behind this. I also assume that atomizers are more economical. Is this true?

It is my understanding that some fragrances were designed to be splash (possibly if for no other reason than the "fragrance house" intended it that way).

On my person, they tend to last longer if sprayed on (and I seeminly use less as well). I think the atomizer allows the fragrances to "Breathe", distribute more effectively, and mix with your body chemistry better. OTOH, when using splash fragrance, I feel as though the scent gets concentrated and can be distorted.
