Yesterday morning, I went to Penhaligon's store in Paris and the fine Englishman working there confirmed the following:
– LP9 will be discontinued. It was initially a temporary Valentine's day perfume, hence the trite name and the black bottle. It does not reflect Penhaligon's image; they are now selling their remaining stock and by January 2007, LP9 will be very hard to find.
– Douro, formerly known as Lords, will be renamed… Lords.
– A new eau de parfum for women available in a fortnight.

I was told just the women's version was being discontinued. Is it both now?

It seems it is so, though we did not talk of LP9 for women. I even asked if they considered renaming and repackaging LP9 to make it look more penhaligonian, but he answered it was very unlikely.

Where is the cheapest place I can obtain a full size bottle of LP No. 9 shipped to the U.S.? I should have jumped on the bassnotes deal but he is sold out. =(

Anyone have any alternatives?

Great! It is my favorite of all the Penhaligon's scents and I have been using it for almost twenty years. I love its old-world scent.
I never understood why they renamed it in the first place ???!!!??

Now I am desperately looking for decently priced sources to buy LP9 before they're gone. What websites do you normally order from?

There is no play on prices that I am aware of. You have to go to either Penhaligons.com or shoplondons.com

I was going to decant a little of my large LP#9 bottle, but now I'm having second thoughts.

If you like it, just don’t. The salesman told me large bottles were going out faster – he had none left. I’ll personally buy four 50ml bottles when I go back to Paris at the end of October. I'm already feeding the piggy bank.

I ordered a 100ml on the 8th. They told me they had another shipment coming in in a week, which would have been about a week ago, but they have left my emails unanswered since then. I may end up with a bottle, but more likely I will not. So far their customer service has been poor to non existent. But we shall see. Now I'm worrying that I will be charged and never receive any product.

For those of you who like LP:9, but cannot find it, the L’homme sage from Divine is a very similar scent, but with the addition of a "leathery" smell.

From their website: (http://www.divine.fr/gb/hsageletter.htm)

I have called it L’homme sage A man who sees far, without boundaries and beyond the passage of time.

The perfume is the same spirit : presence and serenity. I have created for him a balance of notes which are decidedly masculin. At the top, saffron and mandarin, cardamom and lychee. At the heart, balm and aromatic woods, lightened with everlasting flowers and patchouli. The low notes, a timeless oak moss, amber and incense.

They will also send samples to you if you don't mind the wait.

Try YSL's Opium. It's as close as can be.

I've heard this as well, but I have no first hand experience with Opium (of any kind  )

See I'm looking for a gallon of the LP #9  Seriously though, I think I would take a gallon.

If this is true, then I will be a happy man indeed! My girlfriend loves the LP#9 so even a scent that is close will do. :)

I got a good deal on a bottle of YSL Opium, so I picked it up. They are indeed, stikingly similar. LP does seem to have a touch higher quality, but the price is much higher as well. The LP scent itself does seemer richer as well, I can't describe it any other way, but "richer". The Opium does seem to have more star anise also IMO.
Another benefit of the Opium is that it is much cheaper. I got a good deal on my 1.7 LP 9 and the 3.4 oz Opium was half that price.

I really wish Scotto would chime in on this one, the man has the nose of bloodhound.
