Please help me, I would like to get a new brush and there are so many choices out there that I get lost and confused looking.

I would like to keep it around a hundred or less if I can. Purely a soap user and a bowl lather..........

I am partial to Shavemac brushes. They are reasonably priced for a premium brush. Check them out here.

I like the retro line.

An excellent soap brush would also be a Rooney 3/1 or 1/2 super -- soft tips but firm loft that really excels in loading soap into the brush. Check HERE (http://www.vintagebladesllc.com) for specs on the brushes. They also have Shavemacs that Austin mentioned earlier so you can compare the sizes.

I have a Rooney 3/1 in finest. It costs $75. It's a great soap and face lathering brush. IMO it's a better face lathering vs. bowl lathering brush, so you might want to look at other options.

I will second Austin's shavemac recommendation -- look for something in "finest". vintagebladesllc.com sells them (in fact, Jim has a few with quite a nice discount right now), in addition to the shavemac site. Of ocurse, there are lots of good options out there. Knowing that you're a soap and bowl guy, I'd recommend sticking with a smaller size (21-23mm) and possibly a shorter loft.

Good luck!

I love all the aformentioned brushes...But I will offer one more opinion...My Simpson Duke 3 is the best Soap brush I have used!!! As always, YMMV. You can't go wrong with the Rooney or Shavemac. The Shavemac is probably my all time fave!!! ( I use it pretty much just for creams, but it works well with soap)

Best of luck!!!

To show my ignorance: what is the difference in performance between between the £3.75 Wilkinson boar/bristle brush from ASDA (Walmart) or Tesco and the (much) more expensive examples suggested above.

I'm no brush expert, but a boar brush is not going to hold as much water, nor feel as good against your face as a badger brush. I also believe a badger brush is capable of holding more lather as well. Plus, a nice expensive brush will last a very long time. I have been using the same $150 MErchant of Rhodes (T&H brand) brush for 8 months and have yet to lose a single hair from it.
