Ok fellow B&B members, I have found what I was looking for. But I need to start from the beginning.
I was a kid in the 1960's and my dad used DE razors. I remember the old TTO he had and eventually he graduated to an adjustable DE. My first try at shaving (even though I didn't have anything to shave but peach fuzz) was with my dads old DE TTO.
By the time I was hairy enough to really shave, in the late 1970's, the new Trac II's were the thing. I eventually went to the Mach III which I used until last year. The blade scam was getting to infuriate me. "Blades on sale, 3 for $10.00!!".
I decided to go electric so I purchased an electric razor that you can rinse in water etc. The shave was not even close to the blades and I was getting razor burn and ingrown hairs, but I figured I would have it for three or four years and then maybe get another. I was cleaning it about a month ago and tapped the damn thing on the rail. Bad Idea. The top fell off and went flying. Toast.
I decided to do a little research and found Badger and Blade. I read a little and searched E Bay and fell on the Weishi deal for $19.99, 20 blades shipping included. I read the reviews on the Weishi here and I didn't see any real bad reviews so I bought it, got a bowl and soap and a badger brush.
The Weishi arrived and I was really excited. I had decided that the after shave thing wasn't really my deal so I found Nivea after shave balm on sale at CVS. Two big bottles for $9.00. I was ready. After my morning shower I lathered up grabbed the Weishi and started the routine. One pass. Two passes and some follow up. More follow up. Hmmmm. This thing is nice but not exactly the baby smooth shave I was looking for.
Back to E Bay. Searched Gillette Safety Razor. Lots of choices. I came back here and read the reviews on the razors I see on E Bay to get some idea and I start noticing threads on the Gillette Super Speed. I looked up some photos of the 1940 - 1960 super speeds to get an idea. Then I spy a Gillette Super Speed with a maroon tip on E Bay for 15.00 with the original case. I search B&B and find out its probably mid to late 50's. I think I like the idea of a 1950's razor and some people say it is the best shave they ever had, so I bid $25.00 with sixty seconds to go. I win the auction and it arrives at my door the day before yesterday for $20.00 shipping included.
It is in almost perfect condition and when I am done cleaning it it is almost new. I date it to the 2nd quarter of 1956 (thanks again Badger and Blade) Cool.
This morning I had the absolute best shave of my life. Perfect. Exactly what I wanted. When I got home this evening my face had the same growth as if I had just shaved with an electric razor or even a multi blade razor. It is amazing that a razor made in 1956 is this well built and performs like a dream.
