View Full Version : Suggestions for sandalwood shaving soap for sensitive skin?
Are there any sandalwood shaving soaps that would be okay for sensitive skin? Maybe they don't exist, but based on my experience with Mysore Sandalwood bath soap from India, which I really like, I would like to maybe try a sandalwood shaving soap at some point. I haven't used the Mysore in a while so I do not remember if I was able to wash my face with it without any ill effects (I typically do not wash my face with bath soap but use a separate cleanser instead)
One thing: I cannot use any soaps that contain tallow and / or lanolin.
Thanks.

I have sensitive skin, and would suggest AOS sandalwood, except it has tallow (was never a problem for me). QED does not have tallow (it's glycerin-based), but has an extremely strong scent, and some (including myself) experience burning. Mama bear very likely has a sandalwood scent that may work for you, I would shoot her an email to see if she's had reports of any sensitivities to it.
Best of luck.

I'd try the Crabtree&Evelyn sandalwood, if you can find it.

Everybody always yells at me when I bring this up but Caswell Massey's sandalwood puck is very light and easy. I think it smells pretty good and whips up a good lather.

The C&E sandalwood irritated my skin, FYI.

C&E sandalwood is dead and was always just an average performer.
My recommendation is the Trumper sandalwood - light, creamy sandalwood fragrance (not a pure sandalwood) and the current formulation is vegetarian.
Its very kind to the skin and is a great performer - don't be alarmed at the price ($20 for a puck without a bowl), as it lasts a very long time.

SHEP! STOP IT! That stuff is awful. :tongue_sm

Same here. I do not have sensitive skin at all. I think the only shaving product that has ever irritated my skin was the C&E Sandalwood soap.

This is a good recommendation.

+1 on the AOS. I also tired C&E and it seems a bit irritating.
QED. I'm very sensitive, but this one works fine for me.

+ 1 on Trumper
Suggest sensitive skin sandalwood shave soap? Suzuki suggested, Stauff seconded ... sufficient? Super.
I'm very sensitive.

The QED is good soap and certainly the only all EO sandalwood I'm aware of - I still think the Trumper provides a better shave, but if you're a sandalwood fan, the scent of the QED can't be beat.

I've used QED and Trumper. I would go with Trumper as well because the QED does have a rep for irritation for folks with sensitive skin. If you go with Trumper make sure you buy the veggie based version as some of the older tallow formulation may still be around. The ingredients should say stuff like: "Palmate" and NOT say "Soap Base" or "Tallowate"
Another option would be Saint Charles Shave. They are vegetarian based and amke nice, high quality, gentle soaps.

+2 on the Trumper, I'd completely forgotten that one. Must be losing my marbles. :frown2:

Perhaps you need to qualify your comment?
Contrary to your assertion, QED does not have a rep for irritation for folks with sensitive skin. As a matter of fact, QED has an unscented soap that is the only shaving soap some gents with really sensitive skin can use. There are some QED soaps that have EOs with which some people have problems.. These are not necessarily sensitive skinned gentlemen, but those who may have a sensitivity to a particular EO. In particular, Bay Rhum comes to mind. The food-grade glycerin soap used by QED and some others is far more gentle to the skin than any tallowates or palmitates.

Point taken - the real issue is that Charles uses a ton of EOs in his soaps (which is why they smell so great) and lots of folks have reported reactions with many flavours of his soaps. The bay rhum is probably the worst offender (as its a "hot" EO) - however, I've had issues with various other flavours of QED soaps, notwithstanding the fact that I don't have especially sensitive skin or that I've used other products with the same EO in lower concentrations without any issues.
Cvac specifically asked about a sandalwood soap that's suitable for sensitive skin - while I've not had any issues with the QED sandalwood, I'm leery of suggesting any QED (except the uncented version) to someone with sensitive skin without the caveat that the QED soaps contain lots of EOs and many folks find that this results in irritation.
On the other hand, I'm not aware of anyone reporting irritation issues with the Trumpers.
No one's saying that the QED soaps aren't good, we're just indicating that the amount of EO may mean that (with the exception of the unscented version) they're not the best choice for someone with sensitive skin.

You seem to be generalizing just like the other chap when ther is no generalization to be made. There are those that cannot use some EOs, without regard to concentration, while there are others that ,ay or may not. If you enjoy speaking as an authority just get it right. Strangely enough I have never heard of anyone having issues with mocha, or tangerine, or numerous others... But here I have seen two rather ill stated posts claiming glycerin soap with EOs is irritating to sensitive skin... :001_huh:
Rather dubious expertise to pass on, especially when the post was to someone elses mistatement.. Sandalwood EO is the basis of many ayurvedic therapies.. While I personally do not subscribe to that pholosophy, one of those treatments is for acne and sebboreha. What do those Indians know that this group doesn't?
Looks like I will try new Trumpers formula at some point. I have a sample of Trumpers Sandalwood cream but I haven't used it yet. Does the soap smell like the cream?
QED soaps and shave sticks seem to be highly rated, so maybe I will give the unscented one a shot at some point also.
My preference for no tallow and lanolin is a personal thing, not an allergy.

Ron:
I know you are a big fan of Charles' products, but that doesn't excuse rudeness.
We all make generalizations - if you read the post you quoted, I specifically said that the QED sandalwood did not cause me irritation.
I agree that sandalwood is believed to have several beneficial properties, but there is an issue in terms of concentration.
If you look through the various comments on QED soaps, you will see that it is one of the brands in respect of which people seem to experience irritation.
While there are flavours that don't seem to have this problem, I think its worth noting this to someone who is specifically looking for a sandalwood soap that isn't likely to cause irritation.
As I said above, the fact that you disagree with the generalizations regarding QED soaps causing irritation does not excuse the hostility/rudeness of your posts.
