I'm psyching myself up for a race tomorrow morning in Keauhou. Tahitian drumming gets my blood pumping! Hopefully the party I'm going to tonight will be mellow so I can get some rest for the big event. I'm still looking to proudly display a B&B Badger sticker on the nose of my hull for "sponsorship".

Third Place!

Three miles out and three miles back in relatively calm Kona water. My showing was not bad considering I had bonked last years season with a neck injury. This race was a "tester" for me to see how the neck would feel. Kona is looking pretty voggy though with the volcano going off full bore up mauka. You could barely make out the coastline from the turn around point. Over all, a good race with good people, my neck feels ok, and I am back home safe in Hilo to proudly display my winnings: A Kona Brew pub pint glass, a home made "petroglyph" coaster, and a t-shirt. ((Auwriight))!

That is kick a-- in the words of my generation. How long did it take to do the six miles? And is the three miles coming back in much faster because you can surf some of the waves?

King of Kailua

That is kick a--

It took about an hour +/- but I failed to get my time from the officials so I am not quite sure. The course was pretty flat (Kona usually is) so there was not much of an opportunity to catch bumps on the way in. My boat is a Polaris (http://www.kaiwaa.com/outrigger-polaris.htm) made by Kai Wa'a which is a little bit bigger than most of the racers out there in the field, and for me is more suited for the surf and chop you might find on the windward side of our islands. Other boats like Kai's Pegasus (http://www.kaiwaa.com/outrigger-pegasus.htm) are better suited for calmer conditions for my size (190-200 lbs.) I wouldn't want to surf anything else but my Polaris! That new Pueo from Kamanu Composites has been on my mind lately though.

O`Shaughnessy's / Pineula Va`a East Hawaii Challenge (http://www.hawaiipaddling.com/pdf/Puna.pdf).

There was a north and east swell running on Saturday which made for a great bunch of waves pushing from behind us for most of the race. Those conditions are what my boat loves; open downwind swells and surfing. 1/3 into the race and I saw three people capsize, one guy was right on the crest of a roller when he lost control and over he went. Another fellow not 25 yards in front of me almost got T-boned by a humpback whale that came up to spout!!! The Hilo break wall (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a1/Hilo.JPG) was wedging the swell and I felt brave so I ran up close to the foam and spray (and rocks!) to see if I could get some rides. Bravery paid off! I passed a gaggle as they labored outside the force of the wall's action. Turning into Hilo Bay and going under the Wailoa river bridge to round for home, things flattened out and my boat started to feel big and heavy. The smaller boats had an advantage here. I finished well though. As soon as I see some results or pictures, I'll post um.

The cardio work has paid off in spades because I felt great after this race. I drank two cold Steinlagers, had a nice hawaiian plate lunch and after sitting on the beach with my fellow competitor's and friends, I was soon staring at the ocean again longingly. I couldn't take it any longer. I went back out again and paddled the Stan Cann long course (http://www.hawaiipaddling.com/pdf/StanCann.pdf) which was really catching the swell by Honoli'i (http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/3668590.jpg) and down the coastline. I surfed down to the Hilo Bay front and surfed there for about an hour longer. A whole day with the OC-1!! :w00t:

WOTD notes: I raced the short course still being conservative in my recovery and a bit tentative towards my neck and back. But I felt great! It was nice to have a break after the race, drink some beers, have lunch, and then go out for more action and surfing while hearing from fellow competitors about how spent and gassed out they felt after this race. Cardio workouts, my secret weapon!

Here's a cool video (http://vimeo.com/3383352) from a race last week in Kaneohe on O'ahu that featured some Tahitians. There's some good reflections from the competitors on Tahitian rudderless va'a versus the Hawaiian oc-1 design.

Great footage of Keokea '09 race from 21Mar09 OC-1, OC-2, and SUP from Outpaddlin' (http://tinyurl.com/djqs62). This video really captures the community.
