I find cocoa mixes are terrible. Mostly sugar and cheap cocoa. You can order quality cocoa from King Arthur Flour and make your own Hot Cocoa by adding some sugar some vanilla maybe a tad of cinnamon and milk.

Are you looking for a shop where they sell you the drink, or are you looking for something you make yourself?

And a pinch of salt. You must have a tiny bit of salt to offset the alkaline bitterness of the cocoa.

MarieBelle, the best hot chocolate I've ever had. Pure chocolate, no added sugar. So it's actually better for you than the packet stuff, so I've heard.:001_smile
Taste it as is from the can, it's that good.
By the way, I'm not even crazy about hot chocolate and I like it.
It's rich so you don't make a lot at one time.

Here's a link to there web site.

I always just made it the way they told me to on the "side" of the Fry's cannister.

Mix a spoonfull of cocoa and a spoonfull of sugar into a powder in the bottom of your mug. Add just enough milk so you can make a slurry. Then add hot milk, stirr, and voila.

(I adapted it so I'd just top it up with cold milk and microwave, but I'm lazy.)

That stuff is awesome. Doesn't match up with what we drank as kids (Swiss Miss ), but it is some seriously intense hot chocolate.

If you have a Safeway in the area get the Safeway Select European Hot Chocolate. Its my favorite. Its very dense, and more dark than milk chocolate and not too sweet. Best of all you just add hot water.
Very much like the stuff they sell at Starbucks...at least to my taste.

I prefer hot water instead of milk myself as I'm not much of a milk drinker.
Now I was told that water is the more European and milk is more American way, or traditional and non, or both... something like that.

Where have you been? We've been working on our CHADs (CHocolate AD, not Coffee AD) every time the stuff is in season.

I've been a fan of Droste cocoa for a long time. And yeah, that pinch of salt is a great touch. Nice call, lagerlover.

I hate you guys. I really do. Nothing wrong with my bags of Swiss Miss for years.
But now B&B starts showing me other fine stuff. All of a sudden Swiss Miss isnt good enough.
I hate you.

Remember how much flak we gave you about still using multi-blade cartridges, so much so that I had to send you a razor and force you to put up or shut up? Yeah, I'm not going to give you any flak about not switching away from Swiss Miss.

But, you know, if you really want to remain in the ranks of the great unwashed barbarians who think that powdered milk, sugar, processed alkali, and a little cocoa powder makes a fine "hot chocolate," then go ahead. Really.

Well...

...okay, in all honesty, I don't make the good hot cocoa very often. Maybe now that I live in a colder climate (note I didn't say "cold", Chicagoland dwellers!), I will, but really, I can't keep up with all the "good life" finery that we offer here on the site. I'm already in trouble because I need to get a new flashlight (and there's a whole thread about Super Neat Flashlight Acquisition Disorder), a straight razor and the two dozen doodads I need to maintain it, and Rye whiskey...and the list goes on.

Try the gourmet cocoa. But if the Swiss Miss provides a nice cup of hot chocolate for you, stick to it; then spend more time with your kid rather than hovering over a double-boiler, waiting for the milk to get hot. Or, perhaps sometime later, teach your kid how to make the good hot cocoa, and then you can do that together.

This thread seems to be begging for a hot cocoa vs. hot chocolate poll.

I prefer hot chocolate, but every time she sees that I bought a slab of chocolate and cream she screams "chocolate mousse and creme anglaise!"
