View Full Version : A [Temporary] Return to the Cartridge

Late last week I returned from an eight day business trip where I was forced to shave with a cartridge razor because while I had packed a tub of Musgo Real, a brush and my usual travel razor (fat handled Tech) I somehow in my rush to pack forgot to pack a couple of blades. Whoops.

The first morning did not require a shave, but that night I had a business dinner and wanted to be clean. I dug through the Dopp kit and found the Musgo Real, the brush, the aftershave, and the Tech...no blades. At first I thought that maybe they were hiding. Nope. There were no blade to be found, not even a single Derby. F*@k!

Thankfully I did bring a Schick Quattro just in case I needed a quick shave at any point. This was the razor I have used for a few years and from which I got a good shave...at least that is what I thought until I bought my FatBoy. Flash forward to two weeks ago and I have now been wet shaving for nearly a year.

For the first time since I started shaving with my first SuperSpeed I was going to put cartridge razor to face. I was a bit worried. I prepped as usual whipping up decent lather on my face with the Musgo Real and my old Vulfix brush. I locked my eyes on the little piece of four bladed technology and it stared right back at me unflinchingly.

I will admit that my apprehension was probably a little overhyped. By the end of the shave my face was smooth and I didn't have any nicks to patch up. It wasn't the best shave I'd had in the past 10 months, but it wasn't the worst either. Then I put on my aftershave.

I haven't felt stinging like that since my first week wet shaving. Holy crap did it burn. I'm glad I decided to get cleaned up a couple hours before my dinner, because I would have gone down with some serious razor burn and irritation and looked like an idiot.

Each subsequent shave after that just sucked the life out of my soul. I looked forward to the last day when I didn't have to shave (though I would have preferred to have flown with a clean face). I know there will be times when I will need to go back to the cartridge, but I will always double check that Dopp kit from now on to make sure I never make the same mistake again.

Yes, I did give my FatBoy a little hug when I got home.

Don't I know how you feel.

I frequently travel, and as a "Bald by Choice" fellow, I had justified to myself a reason to use a Sensor blade; I used the same type blade for both my Headblade and on my face, thereby reducing the amount of "luggage" I needed to carry. Bad answer. :mad3:

I promptly purchased a Dovo Super Badger travel brush and packed it with some of my "samples", as well as my Merkur Classic, and called it my "travel kit".

I still use Sensor blades on my Headblade, but will not allow cartridges to touch my face.

there must be something in the water Sunday I used my fusion for the first time in months

It's amazing how much you realize that prior shave was so bad when you get one after a few months  Only upside was less weepers.
