Hiya,

Although I've been wet shaving for years, mantics video convinced me to give this a try. DE Shaving. The whole sh-bang. For better of for worse, I went to AOS, and got out fitted there. I'll post a pic later. ( I trust it's the same as attaching a file to an e-mail), right?

So I was wondering, How long does it take you guys to shave and do you use Cartriage Razors or DE?

My first DE shave took around 2 hours. The good news I've got it down to 40 imns.

I told they guys at work about it, the whole process, and they don't get it.

My thanks to all in advance,

Happy Shaving!

I'm with you Duggo, I take my jolly old time (when I have it) and while I only do 3 passes (approx. 10 minutes) I can spend another 10-15 doing touch ups until I'm absolutely sure I'm BBS (this is a slow, delicate process so that I don't take off all the layers of skin). After that, it's another 10 minutes rinsing, hydrosoling, balming, talcing, then cleaning up. Include the shower, and the whole process takes me 45 minutes to an hour.

A "Normal" (3 pass) shave takes me about 10 mins or so (after I get out of the shower - which takes about 10 mins). Then there is about 5 mins to clean up the bathroom... and another 5 mins or so later to "finish" (T&C if necessary, balm, moisturizer, etc). So, depending upon wht you are counting, a shave takes between 10 and 30 mins.

My shaves tend to take a little olonger too - about 30 minutes - I am still learning the process and technique and havent fallen into a rhythm yet really, So I expect it to significantly speed up as I progress. I spend more time than I feel like I need to so I am still working out the kinks.

For me, it's about 10 minutes for a decent quickie, or 20 minutes for an average shave. Possibly 25-30 minutes on a weekend when I'm playing around with products. I can't imagine standing there for 2 hours :bored:

htownmmm

The whole process( shower, shave, brush soak, 3 face passes, 2 head passes, rinsing, balming, alum blocking) when I'm not in a rush 45 minutes to an hour.

If I am in a rush(1 pass only head and face) about 20-30 minutes.
As long as you get the results you want, time should not matter-unless you have somewhere to be.

The shave takes as long as I want it to! Some days I'm in a hurry, but other days, when time is not an issue, up to a half hour. Those are straight razor days.

20 maybe 20-25 If I am taking it easy and just playing around with my shaving stuff. 30 mins if I have a special occasion or if I am doing a speaking presentation.

....making the lather. Today, finally, it was like a meringue:biggrin: Shaving this way is really an experience. Something you look forward to. I don't think I could say that about the way I used to shave. (Cartridge Razor + Canned goo)

Michael, You usually don't use "product" when you do a 10 min. shave? I'd like to know how to compress a 40 min. process down to 10 mins. Where did you save the 20 mins?

Product = Preshave, Aftershave, Balm.
What products do you use?

Thanks.

I don't usually use pre-shave. I can easily shave in 10 minutes, after a shower. I do use aftershave balm, but really that adds only about 30 seconds. Less, if applied while walking out of the bathroom.

Usually 15 minutes from after shower (or) wash face/hot washcloth to lather to two or three passes. Clean up and apply A/S balm. Up to 30 minutes if I can take my time.

I'd say its about 15-20 minutes for me. That's 3-4 passes. But often I wish it took longer, because I enjoy it so much.

My getting up routine takes me about 30 minutes if a shave is included. It goes as followed:

Shower
Lather making and filling basin with water and such then applying to face
Shaving with a straight 3 passes with re-applying lather
Rinsing face with hot water
rinsing face with cold water
AS balm
Deodorant
Pomade in hair and styling
getting dressed
Cologne....

wow...I never realised I did that much in 30 minutes.....and my wife complaining taht I take too long. You don't hear me complaining she puts too much make-up on every day do ya?

My shave takes between 20 (if I use an injector) and 30 minutes (if I use a DE).

This includes;

Soaking brush for about 1 minute
Building later (on face or in bowl - depending on product and time)
3 - 4 pass shave (I can get by with 3 passes with an injector or new DE blade, but take 4 if i have time)
Touch up/blade buffing
Rinse
Alum
A/S splash
A/S balm/moisturizer
Clean up brush/bowl

I'd guess I take around 30 mins for my morning routine.

Shower (about 5 - 10 mins).
Run hot tap while towelling off, fill scuttle and soak brush.
Change blade if necessary.
Rinse face again while brush is soaking.
Drain/refil scuttle, make lather.
Rinse face again.
Lather up.
3 to 4 passes, rinsing and re-lathering between passes.
Cold splash, pat face dry/damp.
Apply Coral skin food & deodourant.
Brush teeth.
Dress.
Apply cologne.
Get angry stares off girlfriend for hogging the bathroom.

10-15 minutes for me. 10 minutes if I've showered beforehand, 15 if I haven't. Add 5 minutes if I use the straight.

this morning was 20 minutes for shave, teeth, hair. Took a bit longer because I decided to fool around with preshave oil, which I usually don't.

I use about 30 minutes in all, shower included. Propably 15-20 minutes or more for the shave. Actually, switching from an M3 to a DE razor is going to save me tons of money on my hot water bill. I finish showering as quickly as possible to have good time for my shave

2 hours - would imagine that my face would look even slimmer :-)

when i was learning to DE shave it took me a long time (45min-1hr) also so dont feel bad. now that my technique has improved i can do a two passer in less than 10 min if im in a hurry. however to me shaving is not a race but rather a time for me to relax so morning shave are usually 30-45 min and weekend and eveing shaves can go well over an hour with all the prep hot towels and such. just do what feel right for you and dont worry if you are slower than some people, if time was that important we would all be shaving with electrics (the horror:eek: )

me, one pass shaves only during the week, 5 minutes or less with my DE. Weekend shaves with my straight are on average about 20 minutes, because I do 2 passes.

For me a 40 min. process would be Nirvana if I could get rid of the razor burn. Not that it's bad now, it isn't. It's hearting to see that it is possible to get the proccess down to 10 mins. I just don't know how. (Read: How do you guys do it? Help) But I'm sure that will come with time.

Like I told my co-workers 30 degrees is all that seperates me from Nirvana. Ome of 'em chimed in, "You mean insanity" I told you they didn't get it. (Thirty degrees being optimal Angle of Attack. AOA the optimal angle at witch the razor meets the skin of the face. And most importantly, razor burn is avoided, right?

as you get more experience the angles and direction of cuts will become second nature and your shaves will get quicker on their own since you are not having to think about what you are doing.

10 minute 2 pass this morning. Very enjoyable.

Yesterday I tried to keep the emphasis on picking up the pace, to see if i could get the entire job done in 10 mins. I feel most fortunate that I didn't have to call 911. I had something like 7 nicks.

I don't know how you guys do it.

Today on the other hand, I took my time, threw in a little concentration for good measure, and that made a world of difference.

Weekends, maybe a half hour; weekdays 20 mins. This does not include showering - just shaving start to finish. I don't put anything on my face directly after shaving. I find the HBS soaps are moisturizing enough.

A leisurely shave is nice; I just don't make enough time for it in the am before work. Priorities. Maybe that'll change.

It generally takes me about 30-45 minutes to shower/shave.

surprisingly
11-20-2006, 05:21 AM
I prep with a hot shower and a hot towel applied to my face, pre-shave cream and shaving oil, and then I fuss around with making the lather precisely thick enough to shave. All of this (after the shower) takes around 5 to 7 minutes.

Next, I do five passes with hot water splashes and re-lathering in between. I include a WTG, two XTG, one ATG and a final touch-up pass. All of this takes around 15 to 20 minutes.

After my shave, I use a cold water rinse, apply ASB, tea tree and wintergreen oil, cologne, and I use some Neutrogena hand cream on my nose and forehead because it's the only product that keeps my face moisturized all day. All of this takes another 5 to 7 minutes.

Counting all of these steps, my shortest shave is around 25 minutes, my longest has been up to 40 minutes.

Now I am worried. This morning was typical. Ten minutes in the bath, 7 or 8 minutes shaving (three passes with a nasty slantbar), 5 minutes dressing and putzing about -- start to finish <20 minutes.

I am missing something here.

But what?

This may sound better in theory rather than practice. I think that idle time while you're in the shower would allow the lather to dry up and deteriorate.

What on Earth were you doing for two hours? Shaving each whisker one by one? I'm still boggling over 40 minutes.

I've only been using the DE for about two weeks, but I got it down to 10-15 minutes pretty quickly. I do:

pre-shave oil
lather cream
three passes, then touch-ups
rinse
apply post-shave
styptic pencil as needed

I shower at night. My shaving routine in the morning (no pre-shave) HAS TO take no more than 20 minutes, because I need to be at work and I value sleep as much as shaving. I can have a really luxurious and satisfying shave in 20 minutes.

my shave takes circa 20-30 minutes. the most laborious part being the lather production (see my other thread). if i could get this process nailed then its only a matter of time before i get it under 20 mins. hopefully anyway. one does tend to loose track of time whilst shaving.

Hi Cory,

Much to my surprise, it worked. The lather was quite usable. But in the end, it could be 6 eggs or half a dozen, because you have to spend the time making the lather just the same. But having the lather ready and waiting for you when you come out of the shower is nice. YMMV, of course. Give it a whirl.

Hiya Tanizaki,

That includes: making my lather which is a [expletive deleted] The consequences of doing so, my arm hurts, my back hurts. Then I shaved, slower than I do today, or that's the perception, and clean up. (I'm real good at making a mess). And last but not least the shower, and flossing, which I hate worse than anything.
