You can find some nice products at Akins Natural Foods Markets such as Kiss My Face, Toms of Maine, Thayer's witch hazel and Lucky Tiger products. (Lucky Tiger products are half of what Dillards sells them for). The OKC stores are at N. May & NE 63rd St., and 2370 W. Memorial Rd up near Quails Springs Mall. If you like to experiment with fragrance they have a good selection of essential oils. As always if you are a member of B&B you know more about shaving products than they do, but they are all nice helpful folks at the stores, IMO.

What types of products does Essentials sale? Is it worth a trip from Tulsa?

I have not been to Essentials. They are listed as a independent retailer on the Crabtree & Evelyn website so I guess they sell C&E products. Akins Natural Foods Markets has two locations in Tulsa. Thanks for the Basketball team.

Found another small retailer in OKC for shave supplies.

Tobacco Exchange
French Market Mall
2836 A, NW 63rd
Oklahoma City, OK 73116.

They are a small shop tucked in by the Burlington Coat Factory in that strip center at 63rd and May. Two nice ladies to visit with when I went in this afternoon. I believe they are just starting to carry DE supplies. Mainly Col Conk products, one style of brush, four or five types of soaps (I remember one was lime), a few bottles of Conk's Bay Rum, and other odds and ends. I purchased a puck of Almond for $5.95, (the other soaps were $3.95) A puck of soap, a fine cigar, with a pleasant staff to boot, its a start. Stop in and say HI and encourage them to continue to carry shaving supplies.

Carwin's Shave Shop
Northpark Mall in Winter House Interiors
12224 N. May Ave.
751-2800

They stock T&H, Col. Conk, C&E, and Jack Black products; Merkur classics, LHCs and HDs plus blades, and Dovo straights. I think the brushes were Simpson's? It's a really small shop, but the selection is nice.

Essentials' in Oklahoma City is have their Fall Birthday Sale sale this weekend from Thursday, Oct 23 to Saturday Oct 25. Normal hours are 10am to 5:30pm. Twenty (20) percent discounts storewide. Includes C&E, L’Occitane, Caswell-Massey, Truefitt & Hill and many other brands. They have received some new brushes in from the last buying trip to NYC. If you shop there you should have got the post card and email. Very nice ladies.

They are located in Casady Square (Brittin Rd and Penn?) and you can call them at 405-842-6401 or Toll Free 1-877-291-7351.

I wanted to post a thread dealing specifically with my visit to Carwin's Shave Shop in Oklahoma City and give some real details. My thanks to the author of the original thread mentioning this store.

The lady who helped us, Lisa, was very enthused about the topic and is interested in passing information and recommendations to the owner, a gentleman who apparently intends to open his own independent traditional shave salon and store in the future. Right now, the store is located in Winterhouse Interiors, on the north side of NorthPark Mall on May Ave.

I knew I'd be posting about my visit, so I wrote down what I saw, sort of an inventory, while I was there.

There was a complete line of Crabtree and Evelyn, including cream, lotions, shaving soaps and brushes.
There was a thorough selection of Jack Black products.
Caswell Masey was well represented with scents and soaps.
There were some very expensive Concord brushes
There was line of men's care products called Anthony Logistics
There a few Dr. Hunter washes.
There was a skincare line called Nickel.
There were Col. Conk Soaps and mugs, as well as a strop set.
There were Dovo straights.
The DE Safety razors were Merkurs, just a few. I bought a chrome Merkur HD, 42 bucks.
The razor blades were Merkur and Dovo.

I made a few recommendations to Lisa that she wrote down for the owner. First, carry more razor blades, specifically Derby, Crystal, Feather and Red Personna. She wrote those down.
I invited the owner to visit this forum and jump on in.
I mentioned Trumper's products, Mitchell's wool fat, Tabac, Speik, Ogallala and D.R. Harris' full line, JM Frazer and Proraso, but by then Lisa was nodding and asking if I'd like a job! She was nice, one of the main interior decorators for the main store.
And I hope he gets in a much wider selection of Merkur safety razors, as well as more brushes like Simpson and Tweezerman.

If you are in the Oklahoma City area, stop by and see these folks. They are doing the one thing you so rarely see in brick and mortar specialty shops - they are really trying, and they are asking questions.

I'm glad to have this information, and will pay a visit.

Also, I have been to Essentials in Casady Square. The ladies are very helpful and they have the high end products such as (IF memory serves) Harris, T&H, Jack Black, some Musgo A/S (they ordered some Musgo S/C for me) and others I can't recall, because there were several on the well-stocked shelves. I'm planning a buying trip in the next few days.

This is a follow-up. The Musgo-ordering experience went flat on me. I called for a status about once a week for the first 3 weeks, then I hit the jackpot so-to-speak on ebay and scored 3 brand new tubes of Musgo Real at a very attractive price. That's when I forgave the very always sweet and kind ladies at Essentials, and wrote it off to cosmic forces making me wait for the real bargain to come along.

I certainly haven't written off Essentials. I hope that maybe there will be enough of us stopping by and asking, that they'll order some Trumper's, Mitchell's, Irisch Moos/Tabac, DR Harris, etc., maybe do a re-order of some of the existing lines, in a true variety of fragrances that people like to buy, at reasonable prices. I know I don't mind at all paying a couple of bucks more if I can take it home with me, as opposed to buying off the www.

Plus, I know that it has got to be expensive for a sole proprietor to sink some big bucks into inventory that people may or may not want to buy. What they really need, in my humble opinion as a guy, is a wet-shaving geek like YOU or (me) to take it on as a kind of shaving mission, helping them stock what actually sells and sells again, and maybe even elevate the shaving line into a web-based mail order entity. Doesn't that sound exciting?

I don't see it mentioned, but I've been going to Bath & Body Works ever since my daughter told me about the shaving stuff they carry. The COBigelow Barber line is OK, and I've got several of my daily routine products there. The big green tube of COBgelow (Proraso) Shaving Cream is legendary.

Stopped by Essentials in Casady Square today and was happy to see they have added some Lucky Tiger products. I have been using the Aftershave Toner for a long time and like it a lot, especially in the winter. As always the ladies were great and gave me a few samples. They been in business over 25 years, but I do agree a shave geek would help.

Also stopped by Carwins Shave Shop. Nice variety of items, a bit cramped, but well organized. Carwins is a bit hard to find as its entrance is the furniture store. Carwins has been there around a year I believe. A nice lady tried to help but was a little lost when I ask for a shave cream sample. She kept tying to give me items like a face mask. I politely refused and she did finally find a shave creme sample.

I am listing the address again for those who haven't visited these shops.

Right now, starting yesterday 4-30-09, ending tomorrow, 5-2-09, Essentials is having their semi-annual 20% off sale. The shaving supplies I saw yesterday were as follows: A fully stocked C&E line, consisting of the newly reformulated Sienna, Sandalwood, and Nomad products, which means the tubs of shaving cream, shaving soap in the bowl and without the bowl, bath soap, and colognes; Truefitt & Hill in 5 fragrances, 1805, Rose, Grafton, Trafalgar, and Limes, shaving cream in the tub and in the tube, and of course, T&H Luxury soap with and without the bowl, in addition to several of the fragrances in cologne.

They also have a shelf devoted to what appears to be the full line of Musgo Real products. They also have L'Occitane creams and soaps, Lucky Tiger products, Caswell Massey, Edwin Jagger/Muele soaps, and Jack Black, if you're into that sort of thing. As we've mentioned before, the ladies are wonderful, and will discuss special orders of any of the lines they carry, if they don't have it in stock. I may be wrong, but I understand the sale prices apply if you call them on the phone today or tomorrow also. (405-842-6401 or 877-291-7351)

Are these places still open? I will be traveling to OKC next week and was hoping to shop around in my off time. Thanks!

Here's what I know:

Essentials is still in place at Casady Square, Penn & Britton on the west side of Penn, and doing fine. The ladies stay busy, and they will try their very best to help a customer. Last time I stopped by, the one I spoke to was very kind, and she made a point to tell me that there is a website that all the guys who are interested in shaving go, I asked her what it's called, and she immediately said "Badger and Blade!". Beyond cool, in my book. You've got to stop by there, if you have the time. Their shaving stock constantly changes and evolves. There's no telling what you might find there. Tell them a guy from B&B named Gary sent you! They don't know me from Adam, I don't talk a lot when I'm shopping there, but obviously some of the other guys do, and it will really make their day.
Carwin's is still inside North Park Mall, it's located inside Winter House
Penn Square Mall has 2 shops that sell shaving goods, Bath & Body Works, and The Body Shop (obviously, Crabtree & Evelyn is long gone)
There is a new little shop at 7101 N May, west side of the street, I can't tell you the name, and they primarily have a ton of cigars, tobacco, and (I think) coffee, and on the counter, next to the cash register, is a little (tiny) cabinet, where they keep a few Trumpers shaving products, soaps in wooden bowls mainly, but not a big variety, at least the last time I stopped by. Their focus is the cigars of course, and if you're into good cigars or pipe tobacco, that is the place to go.

I was by the store just a couple of weeks ago. It is called CIGAR (OK! That makes sense.) They have a larger cabinet holding all their shaving gear now. EJ soaps, GFT Almond and Coconut Soap in the bowl, I saw some Coral Skin Food, some Merkur razors, some Caswell Massey :scared: and some other stuff I'm sorry I don't remember exactly. The gentleman told me they only reorder about once a year because the shaving stuff is a slow selling item. Yes, I did my best to help them out by purchasing a few items. I actually went back again and bought another item a couple of days later. We've got to support our local B&M vendors!

I went by CIGAR on N. May last week to check to see if they have anything new. They tell me they have two orders pending for additional shaving stuff and expect delivery soon. They also have some after shaves, etc., and the guy asked me if I've tried Osage Rub, because they've got some of that. Essentials in Casady Square has the full line of Floris shaving stuff, last time I checked.

I called CIGAR and they still haven't received their new shaving supplies shipment yet... :(

SO .. I went to Essentials last night. A bit overpriced, but not surprised by this given the OKC market and type of store these shave supplies would be sold in. Ended up purchasing a Truefitt & Hill Trafalgar shave cream and Musgo Real Aftersham Balsam. The aftershave is amazing....I forgot to try the cream last night so will have to wait to see about that!

Wished they would carry Trumpers. I mentioned B&B and they smiled! :)

Ok, so I just stopped by Cigar & Company Tobacco Room @ 7101 N. May Ave. in OKC, OK.

http://local.yahoo.com/info-18480299-cigar-co-tobacco-room-oklahoma-city;_ylt=AhuxADHwHWmMPl6KfTrtOw6HNcIF;_ylv=3?csz= 7101+N+May+Ave%2C+Oklahoma+City%2C+OK+73116

I was much more impressed with their selection than Essentials in Cassidy Square (Britton & Penn) in terms of overall shave store supplier. :thumbup1:

The Cigar & Company store has a nice selection of razors, brushes, soaps, creams, aftershaves, and colognes. I thought they had a nice amount, but the owner told me they are about to have double that amount in a couple of weeks. Apparently there is some major order coming in. I mentioned B&B to the owner and he just looked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about..hehe..

Anyhow, I picked up some Caswell Massey Limes Aftershave (3oz bottle for $28) and some Geo F. Trumper's Wild Fern Cologne (3 oz bottle for $59). The Trumper's is a bit high priced but then again if you don't have to pay for shipping because your buying locally, the costs offset each other somewhat. The Caswell Massey was on par with online pricing. So all in all not too bad. I mentioned to the owner that he should order some Castle Forbes. He wrote it down, so we'll see if anything happens in the next month or two.

While shopping, I noticed they carry loads of Edwin Jagger, some Merkur, Clubman, Trumper's, Caswell-Massey, Lucky Tiger, Royall, Dr. Hunter, Musgo, and many others I can't remember.

Overall, cool store, nice products, good selection, and decent pricing. I plan on going back in a month and checking to see if their selection has doubled. :thumbup1:

I dropped by CIGAR on May Avenue today. The sign outside now says "Shave Shop". Their order came in, I'm pretty sure, because they've moved the display and made it much larger. I can't think of any other brands and items in addition to those mentioned above, most recently.

They have a large number of Colonel Conk's Soaps and Aftershaves. They have Lucky Tiger and a lot of EJ and Caswell Massey, primarily. They have several Dovo Straight Razors and some very nice brushes, plus a large assortment of Merkur razors. There's a gold Futur in the cabinet.

I was hoping to see a much larger assortment of Trumper's products, but they had even less than last time. Must have been selling the Trumpers pretty well. The only Trumper's shaving product I saw was 4 Almond Soaps in the wooden bowl. I told him I was hoping to see some other Trumper's Soaps. A few months ago they had Coconut soap and Skin Foods, etc. Maybe they're going to order some more.

I do really appreciate the space and the value of the inventory they've got on hand devoted to shaving. They also sell some nice cartridge handles.

So Essentials in Cassidy Square (Britton & Penn) is having their annual sale starting today. Everything in the store was 20% off. Which brings their pricing down to a very nice level (competitive with the cheaper online solutions and without having to pay shipping!). I'm heading over there tomorrow most likely and hope they still have some good stuff left. The sale goes Thursday 4/22 - Saturday 4/24. Enjoy!

I've been by Carwin's a few time, still have yet to meet the store owner or anyone that can give me some good pointers or advice on my straights, but a good selection of soft goods (soaps, creams, splashes, etc.). I hope to make a trip by CIGARS now that i know they exist.

I have a question though, does anyone know of a good place around OKC to buy use, vintage or NOS razors, more importantly STRAIGHTS? I'm a budget guy and $175 for a brand new DOVO @ Carwin's is kinda out of my range right now.

No, I don't think they are getting rid of Men's shaving Supplies because the C&E, C&M, Lucky Tiger, Jack Black and others are still well stocked, plus none of the brushes are marked down. I think they have some slow moving items that they are clearing out to make some room on selves.

Well, Cigar has gone over to the dark side, I'm afraid. They do carry a lot of Merkurs, but they told me they had a big sale and got "rid" of all their Trumpers, and now they have enough Caswell Massey products sitting around to choke a horse. It seems we're seeing the pendulum swing in the wrong direction.

However, I have not heard of the place on S. Klein, and will make a point to go down there in the very near future and take a look around! If I can remember, I'll come back and post about it.

Regarding Cigar & Co. I think they've all but given up on the shaving stuff. They have Merkurs, some Pinaud lotions, shave and hair products, Some Col Conks and some Royall stuff. They are very nice and helpful guys, but bailing out on the Trumpers was probably economically good for them, but that was all I was interested in. I want to say that the tobacco/pipe/cigar stock and selections are probably the best in the state, however, and definitely worth a visit.

Shifting to a very positive note, for shaving stuff and some good conversation, go to the Farmer's Market!

He let me know that they are moving any day now to a bigger store over off 63rd just east of Western pretty close to the Nichols Hills area. It will be by the old Pearl's restaurant.

He did say that he checks in on B&B and lurks around now and then. He offered and gave me a bag of samples of Jack Black & T&H cream samples. These independent brick & morters deserve and need our support.

So stop in when yall get the chance and give Jim a holler! :thumbup1:

I managed to find a shave shop in north Oklahoma City yesterday while taking my wife to a work function up there. Definitely check out the Shave Shop on the Classen Curve. I've been going there quite a bit now. Jim's a great guy and the store looks great. He carries good products and is always interested in what people use. He definitely takes suggestions and brings in what he can.

I was up there today and at least 2 guys came in and bought their first safety razors. So, it seems to be catching on a bit more here in OKC!

Thanks for merging my thread with this one. I live in Lawton, but I will be moving to Norman next month. It will be nice to be in an area that has some actual stores to find product at. Let me know of any get-togethers.

A get together with Like minded shavers would be fun. Maybe start up an OKC Shave Club. Maybe get Jim from Carwin's involved. He Might be interested in doing some kind of drawings for new club members or special discounts, etc. Would be an excellent way to increase his customer base, which would increase his inventory. :)

Stopped by and met Jim this afternoon. Good selection of T&H products. Picked up a 3 pack of Trafalgar bath bars. He mentioned that he had a gentleman coming in on Thursdays, from 6pm to 9pm, to demonstrate honing techniques for a straight razor. He has a local craftsman creating new scales for antique straight razors and they are quite well done. The Classen Curve development is located at 5710 North Classen Blvd. and Jim's phone number is 405-607-1199. There is still some construction going as they complete the development but the unit the Shave Shop is in is complete.

A get together would be fun some time in the fall after this damn heat wave breaks.

I finally made an excuse to stop in, meet Jim, and check out Carwin's last week, and it's a great place. Like everyone else has said, Jim is looking to get feedback and carry additional lines/ products. I'm looking forward to watching and helping the shop grow!

Hello. I've been lurking quite a while on the forum and my first post is to let everyone know of an old school barber supply shop I ran across in our fair city this afternoon on my lunch break. Anderson Barber Supply at 1200 W Main. They didn't have a ton of shaving supplies but did have quite a few straights, some brushes, mugs, and 1 Merkur that I want to buy but by posting it I'm sure someone will beat me to it.

What they DID have tons of, though, is Pinaud. I picked up 12 oz of Lime Sec for $7 and also got some Master Bay Rum and Lucky Tiger Hair Tonic. They also had Pinaud Citrus Musk, Special Reserve, Lilac Veg, Eau de Quinine, Eau de Portugal, flesh talc....it seems I'm forgeting a few. They didn't have vanilla.

They had several Lucky Tiger items besides the hair tonic. They had a shampoo and some tub of stuff (not pomade) that I don't remember. They had a full line of Jeris (tonics with and w/o oil, talc, etc).

It was a great little supply store and the outside appearances do not give you a hint about what awaits inside. I'll definitely be going back.

Brad, I've been there too. Looks like they've got more stuff in stock than the last time I was there. I'm going to see if I can get some of those products you named. Sounds like I'll be heading downtown real soon. Thanks for the report.

I have been there a few times myself. I forget the name of the little old lady who runs it. By the look of all the dust on the rows of old barber chairs, she doesn't get much business. She used to not carry DE razors. However she did mention that last time I spoke with her, that she was aware of how old school wetshaving was coming back in vogue and she would be getting in a few Merkurs for the first time. If you only saw one merkur, then that means she has sold the others which is encouraging.

I went over there last Friday, but hadn't called first to make sure she was going to be open. It was about 12:40 when we tried, but she wasn't open. It's a hit or miss situation. I'll give her a try again one day this week, if I can remember. I wanted to check out the Pinaud stuff.

It looks like I may have to make a trip to the City soon. It would be nice to know what her hours are though, before I drive over from Shawnee. If you have a chance to find out, Gary, please let me know!

Well, that's the problem. :biggrin1: She has hours posted, but calling ahead is the best way. She doesn't stick to the posted hours very well. I have a theory that she's Mrs. Anderson, but can't swear to it.

When I was there, there was a guy who kept saying he was helping the owner out. He did mention that they usually make deliveries in the mornings and don't open up the store until around noon. He was very receptive to trying to stock whatever you're looking for and said the only reason he ordered the large variety of Pinaud stuff was because someone requested it. I work midtown at American Fidelity and called before I went over - not too much of a lunchtime drive but I was unsure if they were even in business - and he said yes, come on in. I got the impression that calling beforehand would probably be the best idea.

Carwin's Shave Shop is at new location at classen and grand. Jim was a super nice guy, I told him I was new to this whole thing, so he spent about 30 min with me going over each product and how to use it. He then gave me about 10 samples of different shaving creams and soaps. I ended up buying a Merkur 23C long for $40, a pack of feather blades, and Truefitt & Hill 1805 Shaving Cream. Just got home and had my first razor shave. BBS with one weeper on my neck, I would call that success. :)

Regarding Anderson's on West Main St. I've been trying for a couple of weeks to get in. Twice I took folks with me, expecting to browse a bit, and the door's been locked. The second time we went by, a gentleman came up to us and talked for a moment. He is a barber with a shop nearby, and said he needs some supplies but the store's never open when he goes by. That's when I started calling periodically through the afternoon, and all I get is the answering machine. I'll keep trying this week, but definitely won't go over there unless I've spoken to someone first, who will be expecting me.

Anderson's: I've been calling every single day. She finally answered the phone on Friday, 9/9, but I couldn't make it due to a metting at work that went long. There were 2 weeks of calling every hour between 12:30 & 4:30 with no answer.

I finally left a message, asking that they call me. To my surprise, someone called me back. It sounded like a younger woman. She told me that someone who had been helping her was no longer able to help, and that she can't be there until around 3:30 or 4:00. I told her I'd try calling around that time and if I could, I'd try to go downtown when I knew is going to be there, but I haven't had time at work to even call her for the past several days. It's frustrating. I wouldn't normally be quite so persistent, but this is one of those "pieces of history" that's miraculously still around - even if it's not open most of the time. What else can I do!

I'm with you. I work at 23rd & Classen and I can swing by there on a lunch break no sweat if I could just find them open. I know of several items they have that I'm wanting. I haven't tried leaving a message like you did, though.

Hey guys! Newbie here. Just got back from a visit to the locked front door of Anderson's Barber Supply, but I made a mental note of the hours as posted on the door:

Mon: 12:30-4:30

Tue - Fri: 4:15-5:30

Closed Saturday and Sunday

I sure wish I could work 9 hours a week! What a gig. Still, I will try and get by there when they are open and give an update on the inventory.

(My Barber told me this store is a must see)

How have I never seen this thread???? I'll have to stop by the shop on Classen next time I'm up that way. I'm pretty set on shave gear, but I always like to look around. If they stock Castle Forbes AS balms, I'll need my checkbook.

I was in Carwin's about a week before Thanksgiving and didn't see any CF products (if I had, I'd be even more broke than I already am). Looking at their site http://www.carwinsshaveshop.com (http://www.carwinsshaveshop.com), it isn't listed on their product list. They do carry Lucky Tiger, Jack Black, and T&H and have a nice selection of Merkur and Edwin Jagger razors as well as a few straights from Dovo that are tempting me to make the jump to "cutthroats".

I went to Carwins' Shave Shop today for the first time. Nice store, nice selection, and a knowledgeable staff. They are looking for a barber that can deliver an old fashioned straight shave for their customers. Unfortunately it sounds like they're having trouble finding one, no surprise there. I bought a nice razor/brush stand at a good price for a B&M shop. If you're in the OKC area, you should pop in and have a look.
