I just finished shaving with NOW Vegetable Glycerine. I got some after reading "Glycerine Question" posted by Leisureguy in the General Forum. This is also a response to DJ's asking how I liked the Feather Pre-shave.

I did not shave after showering because I worked out earlier and then showered and it was off to choir practice (I direct it). After watching Dancing with the Stars I decided to test the glycerine.

Here is what I did:

Soaked my face for about 5 mins.
Slapped on some glycerine
Soaked my face for another 5 mins.
Lathered
Soaked face for 2 mins.
Slapped on glycerine and lathered
1st pass with the grain - noticeable difference with the glycerine
Slapped on Feather and lathered
2nd pass E-W - blade did not seem to glide as well as the glycerine
Slapped on glycerine again and lathered
3rd pass W-E - Blade glided very nicely

Now here is were I was feeling really good and made a dumb decisionhttp://www.badgerandblade.com/vb/images/smilies/yellow_guys/huh.gif

Slapped on glycerine and lathered
4th pass NW-SE - should not have done this. Some razor burn, and one little weeper. But the 3rd pass felt so good I thought I would try the 4th.

Well I lived and I learned. But I must say that the NOW Glycerine worked much better then Feather. Icecow (from Glycerine question) had this link to the NOW web site:

http://www.nowfoods.com/?action=itemdetail&item_id=3277

That is were I found a store near me. For me I think I will continue to use the Glycerine because it did smooth the shave for me. Again, except for that not thinking 4th pass.

Hope this is of help.

Do you how the Glycerine compares with Proraso Pre-Shave?

I'd really like to know that. I've got some Proraso that I like, but it doesn't go as far as I'd like and if there were a cheaper alternative, I'd jump for it. It may a little more common than the Feather.

No, I have not tried Proraso. When I got started wet shaving again I ordered the Feather. There is so much out there now then when I shaved with a DE 30 years ago, it makes my head spin with all the possibilities!!!!

One thing I forgot to mention about the NOW Glycerine and Feather is that the glycerine is thicker feeling and the Feather feels watered down.

Tim, I have used both glycerin and Proraso pre-post shave, and I think the glycerin is superior. I just can tell a difference in the smoothness. Be sure and get 100% glycerin and not any "blended".

But, gentlemen I think we are missing something very important in this post from Musicman:

After watching Dancing with the Stars I decided to test the glycerine.

Surely there must have been some sports on to watch instead of this. Come on here, man up. Of course, not that there's anything wrong with that.

i just wanted to cast my vote with the for glycerine crowd. my shave went so much smoother using the glycerine as a pre shave.

My wife like Dancing with the Stars. Besides, Emmitt Smith is on it this season and Jerry Rice was last season. Jerry came in second!!!

I use both, but not for the same purpose. I use the Proraso pre-shave as just that, a pre-shave. I put it on while I'm in the shower. The steam seems to "activate" it and really seems to do an excellent job of softening the whiskers up. The glycerin I use as a "pre-pass"... In other words, I put a layer of it down "under" the layer of lather. I repeat that for each and every pass.

I have used both Proraso and glycerin. Even though I love my Proraso I have to admitt that glycerin was much slicker. I am using regular 100% glycerin from my Walgreens not the vegetable glycerin. I am going to try the vegetable version to see if there is a difference. I do know that glycerin before each pass does help the razor glide when I shave.

I am a big Cowboys fan but I refuse to see Emmitt "dancing". I saw him dance around defenders and that's good enough for me. Emmitt say it isn't so!!!!

Emmitt and Jerry spent their entire careers "dancing", and they were the best!

I hadn't thought of putting on the pre-shave while showering. I'll have to try that. Good idea.
