I, like many of us, am continually disappointed by the total lack of intelligence and ingenuity on television but there are a few gems out there.

My favorites are (in no particular order)

Dexter
Pushing Daisies
Psych
How I Met Your Mother
Californication
Criminal Minds
Eli Stone

and of course some perennial favorites for me, The Simpsons and Family Guy

Tim, glad to see that our opposing views on "Seinfeld" don't define us as uh...consumers of telvision. :tongue_sm

All of the following shows are unmeasurable in their awsomeness:

Seinfeld
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Dexter
Californication
Weeds
Sleeper Cell
Big Love
Brotherhood
The Tudors
The Sopranos
Nip/Tuck
Hell's Kitchen
Mad Men
...and I'm sure the list goes on. BTW, did anyone see the pattern of Showtime series in there?

P.S. In my Netflix queue are Psych, The Wire, and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which I've heard were also very good.

NCIS - just pure storytelling
Life - best written TV show available today
Law & Order - a bit long in the tooth but still worth watching, new season in Jan.
Corner Gas - a comedy classic from Canada (on WGN Chicago)

We still watch CSI but the scripts, beginning last year, have not been good and the cast looks like they are just mailing it in.

New shows I'm trying out:

Fringe - mad scientist inventing solutions every episode, pretty girl lead, just fun
Eleventh Hour - eccentric scientist solving crimes for the FBI, so far so good
The Mentalist - ex-charlatan psychic solving crimes for the Calif. Bureau of Investigation, so far so good

Looking forward to:

Leverage - with Timothy Hutton
L&O Criminal Intent - with Jeff Goldblum joining the cast

I watched the first two teaser episodes of Crash last night available on Direct TV VOD or Netflix VOD. They look promising; unfortunately I just dumped my Starz/HBO subscription. Guess I'll have to wait for DVD's before seeing anymore.

Also I really like Rescue Me and the first couple seasons of The 4400 were pretty good (gotten kind of lame lately though). Other than that I don't watch too much episodic drama TV. The Planet Earth series on Discovery HD was amazing.

Sadly, Pushing Daisies will be canceled after this season. The repor among the actors is amazing. Everyone is so different but they work perfectly. It's especially bad since things were really getting interesting with Chuck and her mom and the guy who wants the watch... Another great show bites the dust.

At least Lost is still around. ABC just released a trailer for the upcoming season. Woo hoo!

I watch way to much tv.
That said

Dexter
Hero's
Lost, I never watched this when it came out. The re-runs are on Sci-fi and I am catching up rapidly.
Terminator the Sarah Conner Chronicles. I'm really liking this one.
Fringe
Battlestar Galactica. This show is like crack for me.
My own worst enemy. I know it got canceled but its still fun.
Sanctuary also on Sci-Fi. I will be honest, this show is not that great the acting is so-so, plot is pretty weak I could go on and on, yet I still watch it.
And Robot Chicken.

I never watched this much tv until I got a DVR. Now its so easy to just record what I want to watch and watch it when I have time plus I skip the commercials. I have been thinking of getting rid of cable all together because I waste so much time watching tv when i could be doing some thing more productive. Like looking at shaving soaps or reading about knives :001_smile

I only have one favorite show: WWE Friday Night Smackdown!

I also enjoy reruns of Two and a Half Men. But I don't like the current episodes because Jake is now too old. The stuff that was hilarious when he was about 8 is not the least bit funny with him being about 14.

There are three episodes of Pushing Daisies left and ABC doesn't even want to air them. The execs. are being a real pain about it. :mad3: They may put the episodes into one evening's worth of TV, just to get them out of the way. I guess with the economy, production costs are too much to handle but the show is really great. The creator is thinking about making a movie so he can tie all the loose ends.

I don't know what the deal is with Life. The show is in limbo as well.

All my favorite shows have been named, with True Blood and Breaking Bad being my most recent discoveries. For True Blood fans, there is a featurette that extends the creepy opening credits, it's hypnotizing.
http://www.boingboing.net/2008/11/24/true-blood-featurett.html
The production company who made the opening credits also made those of House, and the best opening credits in any show, ever: Dexter.

I'd like to mention, Pushing Daisies is joining the Great Shows Canceled Prematurely Heaven, with (among others):

Firefly
Carnivale
Futurama (the new movies are pretty good though!)
Dead Like Me

Both Breaking Bad and True Blood are renewed, by the way.

We watch Mythbusters, House, NCIS and I just did a Dexter marathon of the first two seasons, as someone gave it to me on DVD.

What does GMTA mean?

My wife is a 24 fanatic! I just don't like it that much so I don't watch it. I already watch to much TV as it is. She is also a House and Numbers, neither of which I watch.

I knew that Breaking Bad had been renewed but I hadn't seen when it's coming back on. I saw and ad for it the other day and I'm pretty sure it said it will be back in March. Great, another show to watch.

There is no such thing as "good" TV programming any more. The situation is such that some are merely worse than others. If my wife didn't insist on her game shows and soap operas, we wouldn't even have rabbit ears, just DVD.

There are great shows, but then again most are available on DVD or will eventually be. Watching TV "live" when you experienced, say, 24 on DVD, is horrible. Each time I make the mistake of watching FOX even 5 minutes there's an ad for House that spoils half the surprises in the next episode. And ads in general kill my brain cells (and you guys in the USA have those creepy pharmaceutical ads, here it's illegal, yay).

But most of the shows mentioned in this thread are good entertainment, and some even have acting, writing and directing worthy of the best movies. Check Bryan Cranston's performance in Breaking Bad, or Michael C Hall in Dexter. Lost has some very clever and original storytelling, and great directing (particularly in season 4). Internet and DVDs are great ways to discover new shows.

Actually, as compared to other shows out there, I think The Backyardigans are quite good. At least they put more of an effort into it than most others. My 3-year old loves them, and we even took him to their live show (he absolutely loved it). His other favorite is Blue's Clues, which, I think, fired their writer after writing one show, and now use the same story line over and over and over . . .

I'm very excited to hear Fringe is coming back. I love Arthur Bishop, the actor does a great job of playing him. Heck, he even said he likes to play the crazy guy because he can do pretty much anything.

Arthur Bishop is the best thing about that show. So dangerous, funny and caring at the same time.
Tuesday night is new episode of Fringe.

I heard ABC was going to air them over the summer (I'm a huge Pushing Daisies fan too) but unfortunately they end with a cliffhanger, so I really hope you're right about a movie, I'd love to see the loose ends tied up.

My wife is shocked to the large number of men from this site, including me, that like Pushing Daisies so much.

Toss in another vote for The Wire. It's one of the few shows whose later seasons are actually much better than the earlier ones. Really quite a shame it never caught on like some of HBO's other offerings.

I've also recently binged on the latest seasons of Dexter and Sons of Anarchy, both are fabulous. Can you tell I'm into moral ambiguity?

I almost never watch daily TV anymore but have no reservations about blowing a weekend watching a show as long as I have no prior obligations.

I, like many of us, am continually disappointed by the total lack of intelligence and ingenuity on television but there are a few gems out there.

My favorites are (in no particular order)

Dexter
Pushing Daisies
Psych
How I Met Your Mother
Californication
Criminal Minds
Eli Stone

and of course some perennial favorites for me, The Simpsons and Family Guy

The Simpson's is one of the greatest TV shows of all time! Not to mention the longest running animated series.

I am also a huge fan of Mark Wahlberg's Entourage on HBO.

Bumping an old thread, half out of desire to find new shows to DVR (omg, has this thing changed my life or what), and half to express my unequivocal fondness for the AMC show, Breaking Bad. Bryan Cranston (dad from Malcom in the Middle) consistently wows me every week -- some really phenomenal acting. And an enthralling plot. Last weeks especially had me on the edge of my seat. Any other fans out there?

I don't get to watch much primetime (because I'm filling your orders:lol:). So, if I am going to honestly participate I will comment on what I do get to watch:

The Backyardigans - Creative with catchy music.
Caillou - Canada's version of Charlie Brown, just whinier.
Max and Ruby - Great for a quick nap.
Sid the Science Kid - Very creative, informative.
Zaboomafoo - (Reruns) Fuels my son's penchant for "wild, jungle animals".
Jack's Big Music Show - I just like to see Laurie Berkner play guitar and dance.

My name is John. My kids are 3 and 20 mos and I have no life.

You forgot Wow Wow Wubbzy.

My Big Redneck Wedding. Awesome.

I too am addicted to fail, I cried when Gator tossed his bride in the bog.

I skimmed this whole thread and did not see one mention of Scrubs. My favorite show but I believe this is the last season (8).

I love this show. It is what Battlestar Galactica was in season one and two. Gritty, dark and tense, you never know what is going to happen next. Bryan Cranston's acting is just amazing.

But if you're like me the proportion of time spent watching shows
You intentionally chose compared to commercials and whatever happened to be on when you turned on the tube has increased greatly.

Probably only 5% of my viewing time is now spent on things I didn't inflict upon myself.

Mythbusters is a fave, as is Time Warp. Animal Planet has some OK stuff as well, like Human Prey and I Shouldn't Be Alive. Futurama is classic for me, as you can tell by my sig, moreso for me than Family Guy, which I also like. SVU is good, and Spike sometimes has some good stuff. Right now it is Deadliest Warrior, and 1000 Ways to Die I'd interesting sometimes. Destroyed in Seconds is always good for some mayhem, as well as Tru TV. Bizarre Foods is cool, but the host is a tad annoying at times. And I always like seeing the intro for Iron Chef America. Not as quirky as the original, but still amusing.

It's set in 1960s New York City and centers around the life of Don Draper who is an executive at an advertising agency. It deals with his relationship to his wife, coworkers, employees, mistresses, his past, etc. and the relationships of various people whose importance in the storyline fluctuate.

It has America in that time down perfectly. It also has a certain grown-up coolness to it. The first season starts off slow but stick with it.
