This should be the aftershave balm of choice for every dyed in the wool, red pants wearing, cornhusker fan out there.

I have used this stuff on my hands in the past never thought about using it on my face after I shave. I always did kinda like the smell. Man you can learn alot on this forum.:001_tongu

On those occasions when I absolutely rip myself to shreds, I reach for the Corn Huskers. It does a good job of soothing a shattered face (and ego). It's also one of the cheapest balms around.

I, too, have come to use this. It seems to do as good a job as all others (and way better than some), but I will say, I have very oily skin.

I remember using this stuff on my hands decades ago. It was thick and sticky and never penetrated the skin - would wash off hours later. Has it been improved?

I haven't seen Corn Huskers in quite some time. I used to use it every day (my boss said it made me smell like a fat lady, whatever that means). It is an excellent lotion for daily use.

I also used Dr. Tichenor's (http://www.drtichenor.com/main.html) (mouthwash and antiseptic). Those were the two brands guaranteed to be in my medicine cabinet. (and some Burma-Shave soap, so, three brands).

I have tried this stuff as a base under the lather for each pass and I think it delivers very favorable results, especially on the final ATG pass. And the best thing about it is that it's oil free and rinses off very easily with plain water. It doesn't clog up the razor and doesn't leave an annoying slimy ring around the sink like the oils do. Will I use it with every shave? No. Will I use it occassionally to reduce the chance of razor burn? You bet!!

I've used it in the past. It really works pretty good. I thought that for the face it was a little thick for me.

I picked some up last night. It was too thick for me. I have other stuff that's more effective and feels cleaner.

I have been using it for several weeks, ever since I saw it mentioned in one of Mantic's YouTube videos. It works great, better than just about anything I've tried.

i have a question on how to use this as a preshave. are you supposed to get your face really wet, then put on the corn huskers, then lather? or do you just put the corn huskers on a dry face before lathering? thanks.

When I use it I spread it generously onto a wet face then lather up on top of it. I put some more on before re-lathering after each pass. Stuff works!!!!!

I grabbed up some of this at Wally Market for around three bucks, and I'm thrilled with how it works. It rocks!:a5:

I read the review of Cornhusker's and had my doubts. I remember my dad using it and he had some very thick, calloused hands. That what I associate the stuff with, men who need an industrial strength lotion to smooth out hands that are used to hard work.

There is, however, a great, collective wisdom on this site, so I bought some and used it. Just a dab, a tiny, little bit. It was fantastic, better than the aloe vera gel I often use, at least for winter use here in Houston. For the summer, it may be too much, but for now I will use it until the weather really heats up.

I just picked some up becuase its almost the same as skin food without pay $22+ for. I put mine in a smaller bottle and cut it with alittle witchazel, My face was dry in spots so I throw some on tonight and worked GREAT!!

Can't wait till moring to use before my finial pass and after to keep my skin from drying out, It does not smell great but not bad more like baby powder.

But for $4 at CVS for 7oz its better then paying way more for a big name brand that does the same as this stuff.

Somewhere around the internet I've seen this Rx for DIY ASB:
2 parts CHL
2 parts Aloe Vera Gel
1 part Witch Hazel

From some of the comments above, sounds like this might work. I couldn't find any "pure" AV gel locally (only stuff that had lots of other ingredients mixed in) so I've ordered some.

I'd like to get some Bay Rum scent to put into it! Have to go look around for some.

I'd be willing to bet you could sweet-talk either Charles at QED or Mama Bear (Sue) into selling you a small vial of their bay rum oils to mix into whatever you want.

I've already gotten a reply from Mama Bear-- looks hopeful, but I had some more questions which I asked her. Thank goodness she knows her stuff! Apparently, too high a concentration of Bay Rum can really burn your skin (I'm guessing something like cinnamon oil would). :a32:

I saw Corn Huskers Lotion for the first time today. I read it, grabbed it (already decided I want to get it, then opened the lid to see if I could sniff it or if it was sealed. And I LOVE the scent!

Haven't figured out what I want to do with it yet. Maybe take a little bit and mix some AV in with it. Maybe some Pinaud Bay Rum. Maybe use it straight. Maybe mix it with some Thayers WH.

I don't have any colognes that I don't have the corresponding aftershave for, but could one just put a little cologne into the CHL and get a nice-smelling aftershave lotion?

In the winter I use it almost daily on my dry hands. I seldom use it on my face but it's handy when you get a little over aggressive with the razor on the chin.

I have mixed my Huskers with AV, Pinaud Bay Rum, Booster Polar Ice and Booster Aquarius in indivdual bottles. I like to have my after shave balm scent match my splash on. I mix them in travel size bottles from the corner drug store.

I like the scent of Husker too....but its great to have variety.

Does it have the normal benefits of balm over splash, though? I mean, Huskers has alcohol, too. I guess it is a moisturizer, though. I can't stop sniffing this stuff. I'll have to try to find a container to put my balms in. I just used an empty Crew Pomade container for Proraso that the cap broke off, or I'd use that....

Yes...its balm like if you keep the After Shave concentration low. I find AV and Pinaud Bay Rum works best in around a 4parts Huskers to 1 part AS. The Bay Rum is so strong it can go down to 5 to 1.

The Booster stuff doesn't work as well. I guess the scents are not as concentrated so I added more to the Huskers to get the smell right but it mades the resulting balm too liquid.

Give it a try and see if you can get the right balance of lotion to scent.

I bought some at lunch. The smell reminds me of "barber shop" which I like. I think I'll try some Witch Hazel/Corn Huskers combination, see how that works. I'm trying to imagine how this would smell combined with AV though..

I made two balms in small conainers I could find. They're runnier than balms, though. Anyway, I made one with AV, but I didn't use it yet. But the OTHER is made with both Master's Bay Rum and Clubman Bay Rum. I tested out the scent on a paper towel first, a dab of both Bay Rums combined, and I prefer it over either alone. My face feels so nice right now. It soaks in/evaporates quickly, and my face feels better after it than when after I use my Brut balm.

I love this stuff! I just can't get enough small containers. I used a small Cayenne pepper spice container that's about an inch tall. Used that for the Bay Rum.... probably smart, in case I didn't get all the spice out of it!

For the AV, I used one of those tiny glass bottles you get booze in at the counter in the liquor store.

Anyone know any nice small containers I could use for my balms?

Check any beauty supply (Sally's), large department store or drugstore for small "travel" toiletry containers.

Wow. When I was out looking for containers, I stopped in Sally's to get some AS. Didn't even think to look for containers there. Maybe I should have gotten a Sally's card for $5. I could have saved a buck on the AS, and whatever on the containers. I wonder if I could spend enough there in a year for the card to pay for itself.

Just put up a review for the CHL and then read my way through this thread, I may need to try mixing up a bit of homemade balm myself.
Really just want to thin the CHL a bit as I love it but find it kind of thick. Thinking I'll keep it simple at first, a bit of witch hazel, some CHL and some Aqua Velva since that's currently the only aftershave I have (until my Clubman Bay Rum from steveearlefan on the B/S/T arrives :thumbup1:).
Any suggestions on proportions for a mix like that? I'm trying to get the calming/toning effect of the WH and the moisturizing of the CHL but I MUST have enough AV in there for that great menthol cooling. I'll likely just start with a small batch and blend 1/3 each and try it then adjust from there.

I think 1/3 each might make it a little runnier than you want, but maybe not. And thanks for posting this right when you did. I'm about to go shower and shave, and you just picked my aftershave. I really love the bay rum one I put together. I also like it a little thick because your face doesn't have to be dry after the shave before putting it on. It's like after shave concentrate. :w00t:

I do the same thing. The sweetness of the Master's really meshes well with the dry "bite" of the Pinaud.

It's not really an after shave. We just use it as one. It should be in with the hand lotions.

I've used CHL every day for the last 3 weeks. I use it as a pre-shave and also during the shave before ATG passes.

When I'm done, I apply it again after some Witch Hazel, eat breakfast, dress and then apply a final AS for the day. For me, this is less trouble than mixing my own and keeping multiple containers around (though it may not be quite as fun...). I may rethink this approach for my travel bag, though.
