I had posted a while back because I was having a lot of problems with DE shaving, i.e. rashes, razor burn, ingrowns, etc.

Thanks to DogHair, I got a great thick handled tech. I put a Crystal Blade in; lathered up with VDH deluxe soap and the VDH deluxe boar brush; did a three pass shave; and got my first DFS! I am officially a convert with no irritation.

Already I fell the urge to try different soaps and get a better brush. What soaps would be a good next try? What should my next brush be and what differences will be the most noticeable with a badger brush? With this last shave I used a stypic pencil on part my face because I thought it would produce the same results as an alum block. Does both a stypic pencil and an alum block have the same basic effects on my face?

Finally, I feel like I got this thing. Thanks to everyone who put in their two-cents. Now it's time to relax and be happy.

grats on a good shave! Different setup then me, but if the end product works then dont break it! heh just kidding. I just ordered a pack of Ogallala bay rum soaps. After reading the reviews here on B&B they sound absolutely amazing! So maybe give the sampler a try?
I dont know about the alum block, I have yet to get one myself.
Anyway, again gratz on a good shave, and hope someone smarter then me can answer your questions.

Sitck with this set up for about a month. Then look into changing one thing at a time (soap, cream, blade, etc.). Groove your baseline technique. Then you won't have to deviate as much from the baseline for a change in one variable.

...What soaps would be a good next try? I think you're going to get an overwhelmingly large vote for Tabac...I haven't tried it yet, but it's next on my list of things to get...

Good job on the good shave....nice, isn't it? Way to keep at it
