Any Pink Floyd fans

Took my wife out for her birthday and the waiter was talking about different rock groups through the times. He and I appreciate the same kind of music and he was telling me about some of his favorite Pink Floyd albums.. One he mentioned which was not on my 'know' list was "A Saucer Full of Secrets" .. he raved enough on this one that I just ordered it.. anyone familiar w/ this one?

I'm a big PF fan, but most of the time I just listen to all of their songs on shuffle. I have that CD, but I can't comment on it off the top of my head. Hmm... time to go and listen to that album in its entirety :biggrin:.

LOL.. I used to listen to the entire albums extensively on my trips back and forth to Ky (from NC)... my wife is 'not Pink's biggest fan', so now it's Enya... ahhhh what we do for love!

It's their second studio album, and the last one with Syd Barrett. Do you have 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'? 'Saucerful' has a similar psychedelic focus. At one point they issued both albums together, and called it 'A Nice Pair'! My favourite track on this one is 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'.

I've been listening to "More" lately, with Cymbaline and Green Is The Colour being my favorite tracks from that album.

All in all, "Animals" is my favorite album though.

I'll have to check that out, I always preferred piper at the gates to the other albums so if this a transition album I need to take a look.

I've always enjoyed much of Syd's solo stuff, although there are a few which are a little too far gone for me to enjoy.


edit: just read the post above. Set the controls is a bloody fantastic song and the album will need to purchased now I know it's the source of that gem.

One of the few PF albums I don't have. I work at a college and last Spring in conversation with one of the kids working for me, I mentioned The Pink Floyd. He hesitated for a minute and then said, "Can I ask you something?"

Turns out his Mom found out about his predilection for things Floyd and went into a rant about drugs and alcohol - and this is a very clean cut kid. I had to explain the *ahem* "sense" of the band's fans not being the clean cut All American kids next door.

As for Saucerful, it came at a transitional time for them- Syd had already gone looney tunes, and Dave had not yet assumed his full role. some nice tunes, though.

I enjoy all of the oddball stuff, including the elusive Music From 'The Body'. For light listening, Wish You Were Here, More, and Obscured By Clouds are very nice, but I think their finest work is Waters' Amused to Death.

Now everyone knows Andy nor Floyd were big on Pink Floyd. Aunt Bea on the other hand... she seemed old fashion, but throw on some "Dark Side of the Moon", dim the lights, and she would let her bee hive down!

"Saucer'"s an excellent album; much more approachable than "Piper", but still displays Syd's touch. Nowhere near the musical genius of "Atom Heart Mother" nor the lyrical genius of Waters' solo work, but one of my favorites nonetheless; I think I'm with OSY on "Animals" being my favorite.

Pink Floyd is an extremely versatile band. Every album they released seemed to redefined who and what they were. I absoulutely LOVE Piper but it is nothing like Dark Side which is nothing like The Wall, which is nothing like Final Cut or Division Bell. When you have been around from the 60's through the 80's...you can reinvent yourself a few times over.

Btw, Dark Side of Oz ROCKS...I have never watched Wizard of Oz without listening to the Dark Side.

I've always been a little burned out on their two middle period classic albums, DSOTM and WYWH. I still can listen to ANIMALS and THE WALL any day any time and never get sick of them (except for maybe "Comfortably Numb" which we've all heard a billion times). I really hold THE WALL in pretty high esteem, I think it's one of the classic compositions of 20th Century music.. I'm also a huge fan of THE FINAL CUT.. I know it's more or less a Roger Waters solo album, but some of the tracks on there just kill me, esp "The Gunner's Dream" - wow.

MEDDLE is also a great listen ever now and then, and I do delve into their earliest stuff on occasion, but probably not as much as I used to.

I never saw them live, but once Roger left, I really never thought of them the same way. DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER has some great songs, but I could never really buy into it 100%, and everthing after that just never grabbed my interest.

That's a shame. You sound as if you are familiar with a lot of their material, and I can assure you that you would have enjoyed them live. I saw all four east coast performances of The Wall (three times within the first ten rows, including second row dead center), and a host of other occasions. Unforgettable.

LOVE "The Gunner's Dream" (and the whole album); I'm a sax player, and the sax wails like nobody's business on that track. Props also to "Two Suns" and "Not Now John": the seething anger in that last one is tangible. If you're a big TFC fan, you really should check out Roger's "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" and "Amused to Death".

I think and still believe I saw them in 1979 during the Animals tour....:blushing:
