View Full Version : Thin Wallet

I've carried a Costanza wallet for years and it's wreaked havoc on my back. I have decided that I am only going to be carrying a few cards and I have a money clip so I only need space for a handful or cards and a few receipts that I might collect during the day. I have a Coach wallet which I love and has held up wonderfully for years, but from years of carrying a few dozen cards in it, the wallet is incredibly stretched out and anything but slim. Does anyone have any suggestions on a high quality wallet that will last, but small, slimmed down version more suited to my back saving purpose?
Thanks all

I use what is basically an expanded business card carrier - it forces you to keep the bulk down.
Just the necessaries, no pictures, receipts, coins or other junk that a larger wallet can accumulate.
Somethign along these lines (the one I got cost me about $30)

If you want it to last, make sure its all-leather, no nylon linings.

I went to a very slim wallet but the problem that I found is that there was no place for my change. Sooo........ Look at this---
http://www.boscaonline.com/33-ol.html
But I got it here.
http://www.outletbuy.com/bosca-old-leather-coin-purse/201951/446727
I really like it because I am a bit "frugal " and if I don't spend my change then the wife and kids get it, plus if you don't have change you end up breaking a lot of bills. I spend a lot less with a change purse.

Bah! One can always make more money :001_smile. Cordovan last a long, long time - you'd grow tired of the wallet long before it would wear out.

A few years back I switched to a front pocket wallet. I have one of these:
http://www.boscaonline.com/78-ol.html
It holds a few cards and a drivers license. One side is a money clip. It's been great. Since it only holds maybe 5 cards at max I'm forced to cut down on the crap I haul around with me.

If you wear a jacket consistently in your daily life, you could consider a more old-fashioned approach and see if you can find a wallet like the one my Grandfather gave me, which is about the size of a checkbook. It may in fact have been at one time a checkbook cover, but it also has spaces for cards and cash in it. It's designed to be carried in an inside pocket on a suit/sport coat.
Also, while in Paris I carried a money clip/wallet combo thing. It's got a clear plastic frontpiece for your ID, a space in the middle for cards (and one on the back as well) and a clip for cash. It was comfortable in the front pocket of my trousers and held everything it needed to.

I gave up on carrying wallets years ago. All I need is one credit/debit card and a DL license. Cash is quickly becoming obselete but I do carry a $20 bill for those purchases requiring cash. Any important documents or pictures of the family get scanned and loaded onto my Treo. I am free from the chains of walletness.

Key point is to get the wallet out of the back pocket, your back will thank you. I've been carrying my thinned down wallet in my front pocket for a few years now. Just a card carrier really. That and a money clip. No more sore back. Now if I could just get down to a DL and a couple of cards like the others.

I like the front pocket wallet design too. Of the styles shown so far I much prefer the one I have been carrying the past 10 years. I have the two toned black and mahogony, and it's holding up fine. The front flap opens up for two sections of card holders. and FYI when closed the top portion squeezes open for a change carrier although I use it to hold receipts. Don't like carrying change. Cheap too at $50. Link. (http://www.herringtoncatalog.com/es425.html):

I went through the same process just a little while ago. Did some research, and found Aspinal of London (http://www.aspinaloflondon.com/eshop-catalogue/mens-collection/mens-leather-wallets). They have absolutely stunning leather goods. I was actually looking for a premium-quality leather A4 padfolio at the time, and I came across their wallet section. They have beautiful slim wallets in several styles that aren't outrageously expensive. I placed an order last Friday, and DHL courier shipping (their only shipping option) across the pond had the order in my hands at 9am this morning (Monday). Now I'm the proud owner of a GORGEOUS new slim wallet (I picked up the tan/espresso slim ID wallet), a matching checkbook (on sale for an amazing $7.50), and the most beautiful A4 pad holder I have ever seen (black with cobalt suede). I couldn't be happier.
Aspinal's attention to detail is immaculate. Everything is handmade, the leather feels and smells incredible, and the colors combinations are beautiful. Their prices aren't absurd, either...there's a shipping/handling/customs duty surcharge that is proportional to the price of your product, the only downside from ordering from the UK (if you could call it that--3 days courier shipping across the Atlantic!?!).
This site certainly feeds my fine leather goods AD... :thumbup1:

I use something similar. I got it a couple years ago as a gift. It is a money clip on the front, and the back has an open slot that holds 5-6 cards securely. It took me a while to get used to the lack of space, but then I realized, I rarely use more than 2-3 cards.

Although, seeing the "as seen on TV" logo, I don't know if I can use it anymore in good conscience...

Cigarette case or the Swiss Wallet (Wagner of Switzerland)
A hearty ++1 on the Swiss Wallet. Made of durable aluminum with a steel money clip on the back. The inside holds 5 cards comfortably with no fear (from me anyways) of them falling out. FTWDK, the cards are inserted into the wallet from the top of the narrow side. This engages a spring mechanism that when the cards are pressed in, efficiently locks them in place. Items can be removed by pressing forward on a button on the face of the wallet, almost like a switchblade. I've been obsessed with thin wallets and traveling light for years now and have tried all sorts of things. Before my Swiss Wallet, I literally took the photo id flap from another wallet and used that for a couple of years. I've had the Swiss Wallet now for over a year, and don't see myself getting tired of it anytime soon. . . That is untill I saw this ad for another thin type wallet from https://www.dosh.com.au/. Just a warning, their wesite is mostly flash and it runs real slow on my computer. Other than that I'm real intrigued by the DOSH 01 Shadow.

When I was in the USA this summer I stopped off at coach in San Francisco and got me a money clip. my loose change just goes in my jeans pocket and I feel much lighter for it. Maybe the best 50 bucks I've ever spent. I've been using it literally for 8 or 10 years w/ only minimal visible wear. Fits in any pocket w/ ease, holds all my necessary items and a few not so necessary ones. It's still the same price too which is rather amazing. I like browsing Harringtons. I bought the All-Ett original and it worked out great. They tell you that it will last around two years, and that was about right. I decided after the original was starting to show signs of age to get the Executive leather All-Ett, basically the same thing but with a leather outer - same nylon inside. It's working out OK, but the top corner of the leather, where it was sewn to the nylon, came apart about 1/4". I looks like sewing leather to nylon, and the stress of the wallet in the pocket, weren't a good mix. It's been that way for a good while without any further signs of wear, and I barely notice it. The only thing I like better with the leather version is that my credit cards seem to stay in better, even though the interior is exactly the same. On the original, if I didn't flex the wallet inward a bit while I had it out and open, the cards had a devil of a time not falling out. But, overall, I really did enjoy the VERY thin wallet in my back pocket.

One other benefit of front pocket carry is longer wallet life. When I carried in my hip pocket, I was destroying a wallet in about 2 -3 years. I'm still on my first front pocket wallet after almost five years of carry and it still looks new.

Two questions/comments about the All-Ett.
All the links from the "Store" page end up with a 404. Anyone else run into this?
Also, they offer 3 colors for the "Original" besides black, but I didn't run across images showing the other color options. Anyone run across any?

I don't see the pics of the different colors for the original (same as you), though i don't get a 404 w/ the store links (not the same as you)..

That's the one I use! It is perfect for my front pocket 4 card approach: driver's license, credit card, debit card, Costco card; and some cash...

I've got a brown leather wallet I picked up at J.C. Penny's a few years ago. It seems to be holding up fine. It came with a removable bit for your driver's license, but I find that it is plenty big enough for a license, insurance card, and two or three credit cards, so that's all I carry. Along with a wad of small bills folded up in my pocket (I don't like money clips).

I had the same problem. For years, I sat lopsided on a fat wallet (from the stack of cards and thickness of the leather, not from lots of money). My solution was to find a thin bill fold that could hold a few cards, DL, and a few bills. FOSSIL had a nice black leather bi-fold that suited my needs. Although I like it, it does make taking all the necessities more difficult. There is no room for things like discount cards, library card, credit cards I don't use very often such as BEST BUY. Also, some things placed in the bill section has a tendency to peer out the top.
Give and take, I suppose.

+1 on the all-ett. I have the original in use for about 5 years and it is still like new. It drops the size of the wallet in you back pocket by @2/3. It's design and material (sailcloth) make it a unique product. I had the same trouble with my back pocket and lower back pain. This solved the problem- For $20 it does the job very well. I highly recommend it.

I read the thread and bookmarked the site for the all-ett and put it on my little wish list. I got one today from my brother in law for Christmas. I really like it! Thanks!
Influenced by a doctor back in high school I started carrying my wallet in my side pocket. It does wonders for your back trouble. It doesn't matter what wallet you carry. It's easier to keep track of if pickpockets are loose!

Has some ugly markings on one side since I keep my keys in the same pocket, but structurally, it's like new, which is pretty impressive considering it went through the wash more than a few times when I first started carrying a wallet. It's not the thinnest wallet out there, but it definitely isn't thick either.

I don't even remember the last time I bought a wallet. Leatherworking is one of my hobbies. I buy sides of leather and the other materials I need, cut out my pieces, punch, tool, dye, paint, etc. My wallets last about 10 years before I feel the need to replace it. I do the same with belts, checkbook covers, ladies purses, handbags, etc.

Saddleback Leather makes terrific quality wallets although they are very limited in their sizes.
I think they only offer a credit card style wallet and a checkbook style wallet.
I've had a few Coach wallets and they were always way too thick... but they were terrific looking. I just couldn't sit down with them in my back pocket.

I'm with Gruder. Years ago, I bought a tri-fold wallet from Orvis that is leather/canvas. When it finally wore out, I bought another that's going strong.

It may not be to everyone's taste but if you want THE MOST durable wallet on the market you can't go past one made from stingray leather. I am quite into exotic leathers. I've had wallets made from snake, seal, emu, ostrich, deer, alligator, lizard, kangaroo. You name it. NOTHING compares to stingray for durability. I'm quite hard on wallets so I'm always changing them to keep them looking nice. Three years ago I bought a Pierre Cardin croc skin wallet as a backup for when the Stingray one, which was not expensive, fell apart. Three years later the croc skin is still in the draw and the stingray looks like new. It's crazy stuff!

I've been getting catalogs from "Herrington's"....they offer an Italian wallet made of aluminum.
While I don't own any Filson products, I've admired their stuff. Teh obstacle has been their limited selection of tall sizes. Their stuff is pricey, but appears to be excellent quality.
I have a Coach money clip that also holds a few credit cards/drivers license and several other items, but remains thin enough that it's perfect, in my opinion. It's been extremely durable, and I'm not easy on stuff. I've had it for 5 years now, with no ill effects. Highly recommended.

Speaking of durable wallets, I have a wallet that has held up well over the years (Woolrich) but I have the same problem as I've had with my other wallets: the cards that don't get used very much wind up with some sort of black, spotty film on them. Have any of you experience that? Is it a symptom of poor material, or some kind of reaction between the plastic and the cloth/leather? Would a high-end wallet solve this?

I know exactly what you're talking about and it remains a mystery to me... It's happened to two of my wallets; one wallet was leather lined so there was direct contact with the card, but the other was lined with cloth; no direct contact between hide and plastic..hopefully one of the chemists can shed some light on this!

Does anybody out there use one of those "old fashioned" sized wallets? You know, the ones that are about the size of a bank note, not folded in half, and very flat. I have a couple of vintage ones at home which I think would be pretty cool to use but there are two problems that I can see.
1. There are obviously no pockets for credit cards, as they had not been invented when the wallets were made.
2. They are too long to put into your back pocket without a bit of it poking out, tempting thieves. In the old days a gent used to always wear a jacket with a inside pocket and I don't, especially in summer.
Putting those things aside, however, they still have a bit of form. Anyone had experience you can share?

I used to carry one every time I wore a suit. The process of transferring everything over from my regular wallet became too much of a fuss, though. The couple I had were bought new from department stores and had slots for credit cards.

I have the leather Executive that I use every day. Filled with WAY too many cards and scraps of paper, but because of the design, it fits nicely into my suits inside pocket. At a pinch it can be put in my back trouser pocket as well ( but that doesn't happen much ).
( I even have my backup Executive for when my old one "breaks" )
Looks good.
I also have their spinnaker International for when I want to go out with just drivers license, couple of cards and some cash.
Spinnaker material is definitely the lightest and thinnest but it's not a look for everyone and makes strange "crackling" noises :001_smile
Current special offer is $5 off the International till September 20th ( so $14.95 for Spinnaker, $24.95 for Leather )

I received the leather Executive All-Ett for Christmas last year. I carry it everyday, and it still looks great. I was concerned about the size at first thinking it would be on the big size, but it is not. Fits in my back pocket just fine and my front pocket as well which is where I carry it most often. The only negative on the All-Ett is the spinnaker material is a bit slippery. The cards go in sideways, and you have to be careful when you open the wallet because if you tip it too much, cards can slide out. I have learned to use a finger to hold them in place or semi-fold the wallet a bit to keep them locked in. It is not like they fly all over the place, but they are more apt to move than in an all leather wallet.

Dito on the front wallet. I switched to front for two reasons: 1. Back Pain 2. Security. Most truck/delivery drivers get bad back problems related to sitting on their wallets for extended periods; also office workers. A lot of my friends who have had back probs. have been told this by their Chyropractor. Further, it's harder to pick pocket a front wallet (though not impossible). Pick-pockets hate chain wallets, so I keep my wallet in the same side as my chain key ring so atleast it gives that impression, plus when your keys jingle or fall out it's a dead giveaway.
I'm a fan of the Filsons mentioned above - sweet, but Filson can be very pricey. Have you considered Cabella's -

I like the fabric wallet combo as leather stretches even though it's durable - it all ends up smelling like ass in the end. :ciappa: - Bun intended
If you want something real durability there's Deluth. Remember the old durable fire hose material. They have "fire hose" wallets. http://www.duluthtrading.com/default.asp

While you're there check out the long-tail T's, "Fight Plumber's But." At Christmas time you can get them as a gift that comes in a miniature "5gal." bucket that reads: "Crack Spackle".
Also, if you use those shopping saving cards, they usually come in a keyring version - this can cut down the thickness considerably, and I've noticed that some things in your wallet that you won't need handy can be kept in your car.

I've been carrying my wallet in my front pocket for years. I only keep cards and ID in it. Cash gets folded and goes in the other front pocket. I find money clips to be absolutely useless objects that only add bulk and weight. Money folded in half and stuck in the pocket stays together just fine.

I know it's been said, but it's worth saying again. The All-ett (http://www.all-ett.com/) is a tremendous wallet. I've had mine for quite some time, it's held up tremendously, and is super thin.
It's thinner than no wallet at all.

I have quite a few wallets and I always seem to come back to regular card cases, I have a Ralph Lauren and a Coach one. I'm using the Coach one currently.
I do have a Ralph Lauren Purple Label foldover cardcase which is quite nice, but it's a little thicker than your normal card case. They're availble on ebay for far below retail.
I also have a vintage sterling silver business card case that I will occasionally. The only downside is it's limited to 3 cards (2 CC and drivers license)...oh, and it tarnishes really quickly.
This is the Coach one I'm carrying now, only mine is in British Tan colored buffalo hide. 2 slots on each side and a center pouch

I too stopped carrying a wallet in my back pocket and carried a smaller one in my front pocket. However, wearing a suit coat or sport coat five to six days a week allows for me to now carry a traditional coat wallet. Mine is made by Ettinger of London (http://www.englishhall.com/ettinger/ettinger/purple-and-bridle-wallets/746/bridle-coat-wallet/).
I have spent a lot of money on leather goods over the years and have never been so impresed as to the fit, finish and quality of leather as I have with Ettinger. They have been making leather goods since 1934 and still make them by hand in England. Check them out if you got the time . . . http://www.ettinger.co.uk/

Tim, I've carried one of these (http://www.all-ett.com/) the last several years, and they're very slim. I have the Original and the Executive leather.

I just got a new front pocket wallet from Coronel Littleton. http://www.colonellittleton.com/?p=products&f=prod&cat=5&id=w5
Simple, yet dignified.
Thanks all
I use the "Big Skinny" wallet (NOT the leather one).
Here is their Link:

P.S.You will not regret thinning that wallet down!!

I have been using a viewslimmy for a few weeks now. I still freak out every once in a while when i check my back pocket and nothing is there.
It was hard deciding which cards to carry. I have to carry 4 cards just for my medical/dental....

I stopped carrying anything in my back pockets around 1998 after watching a show on TV about pickpockets which showed live demonstrations against people who knew that something was up and were being cautious. It freaked me out.
A few years ago I started a slow process of simplifying my life and trying to get away from "gear fetishization". I currently carry no wallet.
Front left pocket has driver's license, credit card and the RFID access keycard to get into the office. Those are in my pocket and loose. After 18 months I've never lost a card. I keep any bills stacked, ordered and folded in that pocket, though I don't keep much cash. Any coins that I get during the day sit in this pocket and are offloaded into a jar at night and run through the coin counter at my bank a few times a year. Free money!
Right front pocket carries my iPhone which wears an ultra thin clip on case around the back. iPhone screen goes towards my leg. Simple split ring holds car, apartment and mailbox keys and goes in the "watch pocket" in/on/near the main pocket. If I owned and didn't rent I'd replace the deadbolt on the apartment with a keypad and stop carrying a "house key". I did this for two years at a previous residence.
That's it.
Images of my health insurance card, my Sam's Club card, etc live in the photo album of my iPhone. They can't barcode scan the card, but they're always willing to type in the number from the image.
"Thin" is easy when you carry less. :)
