Just had my second DE shave with:

Merkur Classic with Merkur platnuim blade
Edwin Jagger Best Badger
Florena shaving cream
Aqua Velva Ice Blue

It wasn't BBS (I'd need a S-N pass for that) but significantly better then my first shave. (Despite a couple of cuts)

SCS Savory Rose cream (sample)
SCS Bergamot Rose Hydrosol
Proraso Liquid cream a/s

Trumper's Eucris

First try with the SCS Savory Rose. Had a heck of a time getting to to lather at 1st but I added some more cream and water and finally got an acceptable lather.

Nicked myself pretty badly today for the 1st time in a long while. No major nicks but just 6 small ones.
I loved the smell of the cream and will give it another try.

Used the Proraso because I felt I needed someone with a cooling effect after this shave. This aftershave is definitely one that I need to use more.

The SCS Hydrosol is nice but I need to get some more DaVinci H2O. Charles should be getting an order some time today.

I love the Trumper Eucris so I couldn't think of a better edt to start off the week.

Have a great day.

My face hasn't felt right lately. I had bee trying some things that were not in my regular routine and I think I may have to lay off for a little while. They were a feather blade, an Aristocrat (probably the offender), a NWC injector. I tried all three of those within a week or two and now I have some ingrown hairs on my jawline. I didn't have those before. I may have to go back to my baseline set up and get a good if not great shave to let things cool off a bit.

I was really trying to give the injector a good try. My face was steamed, soaked, and ready. I gave the lightest touch I could. I had a great lather from the KMF cream. It still ate my face.

I think I either have a dud injector, a dud blade, or the Schick blades just don't agree with me. The razor cleaned up well, but I had to bend a few parts back into place because it arrived rather loose. It's tight now, and I don't see any visible mechanical defects, but boy is it ugly to use with those Schick blades.

Ouch. It gave more of a tractor pull than a clean cut  On the other hand, I love the KMF cream. It's cheap, it's only the second cream I've tried to give me a good lather, and it smells delicious - like a deep, rich french vanilla.

Quite a rough shave this morning, seems I've been going at it a little too wild. Tomorrow no shave to let my face recover although the red spots are already gone (1,5 hours after the shave), yet I can still "feel" the roughness.
As of Thursday I will renew my focus on a very soft touch and maybe try my Merkur HD once. After getting a couple of good shaves it seems I slightly start to lose focus because I think I have the technique under control but then I get both feet back on the ground. Respect the blade and the technique, otherwise it'll come crawling slowly and kick you in the *ss!

Much better shave than yesterday with the injector. It still hurt like  while shaving, but the results are good. Not quite as close as I've gotten with a DE, but it was easier and gave less irritation. Either the Schick blade is broken in or I am!

I probably only have about 6 or so left, so once I use these up, I won't be repurchasing them, especially since I can get the Schick blades through Amazon with free shipping!

Kudos to you for raising the photography bar around here about two notches. Your stuff is good. When you post your photos, could you include the camera, lens, and how you lit the shot? Some of us fellow shooters would be curious to know.

Thanks.

Thanks! Yeah, I agree about the B&W thing, I just like to try something a little different everyday. A new way to look at everyday things, I think that's what I'm going for. Even if it doesn't turn out that great, it's only one day...

Camera is a Canon Rebel XT (soon to be updated with an XTi). I have two lenses, the run of the mill 18-55mm lens the camera came with and my favourite ,the Canon 60mm f2.8 EF-S USM macro. I use the macro mostly nowadays as the results are always outstanding (it is a super-sharpity-sharp lens, and also creates a nice background blur). I prefer having a fixed lens much more as it forces "you" to move to create a more interesting shot and not just zooming the lens. In other words, it gets you to think more.

Lighting: External speedlight flash bounced upwards, off the ceiling usually. The lens sends distance information to the camera and then to the Canon speedlite to get proper flash exposure metering. Sounds fancy, I think this is what makes a huge difference. You cannot get a "nice" shot with a direct flash, no way, no how.

With the flash you won't need a tripod. I have a tripod, but it is hard to be creative with one.

As for camera settings... I must admit, I put the camera on full auto or auto close up setting (I mostly use the latter setting). The Rebel does a good job of doing the business in an intelligent way. I just force the camera to focus on what I want and let it do the rest. I know how to manually set it, but unless I want something absolutely specific, I just let the camera decide.

Composition. I figure most guys know what a tube of Palmolive, for instance, looks like, so I chop it off, do a close up, position things in an interesting way, etc. Use your imagination. Make it interesting. It is hard to do something new everyday, but it gives me something to think about while toiling at work. I am not a very creative person, so for me it is a challenge and I enjoy it. I've had the camera for a year now, but only in the last few weeks I have discovered how to make pictures more interesting.

And, wouldn't you know it, but it was/is the best damn shave of my life. Normally I do quite a bit of blade buffing with my Merkur Long Handle/Derby combo, and I get good results - but this was faster, easier, etc.

It, of course, got me wondering about an HD (I like the weight of the razor, even though it is a tiny bit small for my big paws). Maybe one of those will be in my future.

Anyway, the SOTD was:
>> Merkur Slant with Feather
>> Proraso Pre/Post
>> Proraso Green
>> Proraso ASB

Keith, do you "prime" the brush against the top of stick a good amount? If I do this, the lather gets quite thick once I begin working it on the face. Obviously, there could be water hardness issues at play.

I thought the exact same thing until I read this and this. A little hot water on top of the soap, a lot of swirling on top of the soap, a lot of swirling in the bowl (until your wrists cramp), a little more water, a lot more swirling...and soon you're up to your elbows in lather.

After Tuesday's rather rough shave due to insufficient focus I went back to basics this morning. Towel technique and high quality lather were present. 3 passes (2 with the grain and 1 across) and one minor touch up on the left side of the chin resulted in an overal very enjoyable shave. Not BBS but definitately closer than the previous days.

Today's shave results proove once again that it all comes down to no pressure, taking your time and proper technique. No irritation whatsoever and only a minor bit of sting during the alum block rub.

A decent shave, but the adjustable is pretty rough on my face and gave a few nicks. Admittedly, I cranked the adjustment a bit high on the touchup.

Thursday:
Gillette Slim Adjustable w/ Swedish Gillette blade (day 2)
SR-204 brush
Honeybee Coolwater soap
L'Occitane Eau des Bergers A/S splash
Trumper's Coral Skin Food
Nancy Boy replenishing facial moisturizer
Floris JF EDT

I just got a Scotto A/S and scent sampler last night. The Eau des Bergers and Floris JF are both very nice scents. I like the JF in particular - warm yet inviting, a whiff of citrus and a woody finish. I've heard that it's similar to Coolwater, so I paired it with the Honeybee Coolwater - not alike in the slightest.

The Coral Skin Food was pretty good - not "sickly sweet" like I've heard, but sweeter than some other rose scents. It wasn't enough to cool the burn from the adjustable so I added some Nancy Boy moisturizer.

Don't think I'll use the adjustable again for a while. Too brutal, even turned down.

The Luxo Banho soap is really nice stuff.
The Progress is quickly becoming my favorite razor especially with a Feather blade.
The Burt's Bees toner is nice with an unusual smell.
Really liking the Gucci cologne as I find it to be just as satisfying as Trumper's Sandalwood or Pecksniff's Oriental Woody at a much cheaper price.

Overall a really nice shave to finish out the work week.

Have a great day.

Ha Ha...good point. It reminded me of something my friends use to make a long time ago...Ghetto Mimosas...drink a 40 of OE down to the top of the label and then fill it back up with Donald Duck OJ. Apparently it had to be Donald Duck in order to truly be Ghetto...as if the Old English wasn't enough. This is a recipe for one hell of a hangover.

A pretty close shave, but brutal on my face once again. The only razor I seem comfortable with is my Merkur, a 1904.

I'm curious about your razor. Does that razor have problems using the thin modern blades? I thought razors that old used a thicker blade. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Man, that Coates is NICE! Too bad the smell is horrible. Really, one of the worst I've smelled in a cream.

Really? I love the Coates Tea Tree creme but I find the scent to be far less annoying than other products using tea tree oil. As a hot lather I think it smells pretty good going on. Cold lather, hmm, probably it would not be as popular with me.

I'm not really a fan of any 'pure' tea tree items myself. The Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree soap doens't smell very good, and the QED Peppermint, Patchouli, and Tea Tree is almost too much.

Honestly, I'm far from an expert, but it seems to work just fine with modern blades - there's no extra gap and the exposure is about right. It's just my technique that needs work. I have a fatal weakness - I can't get over the fact that, without pressure, the razor doesn't feel like it's doing any work. I need the feeling of cutting to be satisfied, but then I get the feeling of razor burn

I really do think it's a great razor. It came in a gorgeous metal case with velvet interior in wonderful condition. There's a good amount of heft to it. I'm not sure about open comb razors in general, yet, but I'd recommend this one.

Yep! Smells and feels like "the real thing".
This soap is really something:w00t:

I bought it dirt cheap from http://www.westons.com/cgi/sh000247.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2ewestons%2ec om%2facatalog%2fsearch%2ehtml&WD=erasmic&PN=Online_Catalogue_Erasmic_2211%2ehtml%23aERA13V# aERA13V

Thomas, I love the Erasmic soap in the bowl, I actually think it pushed in front of Arko soap for me. I agree that the cream from Erasmic's a treat as well. Ingram will be another treat for you, it smells very nice and minty, and it also is extremely cooling, with rich, delightful lather, and it leaves the skin feeling clean, fresh and smooth. Try it for your next shave.

I can see we are both getting a lot of work done....

CF Limes has an amazing scent. Probably the best straight-lime scented cream out there. It is a cream version of the exceptionally scented QED Fresh Limes. The shave is decent, but not exceptional. And the price? :thumbdown

SOFRI Cool Concentrated Moisturizing balm

Laura Biagiotti's ROMA cologne

This time I intentionally left out the alum block and I gotta say, no probs whatsoever with the Nivea AS. Maybe it's the combination of both the alum block and the AS. I do find that the skin on my shaved area feels a little sensitive after I applied the SOFRI moisturizing balm on it.

Not sure what happened with today's shave: even though the Derby Extra blade had 3 days on it with each time 3 passes, today's shave was the best DE shave I've had since I started DE wetshaving a month ago. I focussed a little more on angle today because I think that over the last couple of weeks, my angle was too steep. I held the razor handle more parallel to the floor so more perpendicular to the face and the results of my first pass were superb. While the most hairs come off during my first pass, this time alot more came out of it. The better angle also gave no irritation or red spots I think.

I also didn't lather the soap in a bowl but I lathered quite thorougly on the wooden soap bowl itself and lathered directly on my still very wet face from the shower. 2nd pass was with the lather which was still in the brush (alot). For the 3rd pass a few drops of water on the brush rehydrated the remaining lather and gave again excellent results.

Tomorrow's shave ritual will be the exact same as today.

Awful, awful shave. It has to be a bad Swedish blade. I've gotten four awful shaves in a row from this thing - nicks all over the place with a painful cut today. I had the lightest of touches, and changed the other products around throughout the four days. Needless to say, I tossed the blade and popped in a Derby for tomorrow.

The C&E Sienna soap is great stuff. It's not the most moisturizing, but the lather, scent, and lubricity are all great.

Edit: Forgot to mention the Baxter's ASB. This could be a new favorite. It's light, fairly moisturizing, and has a nice lemony citrus scent. It could be up there with Proraso pre/post!

I thought the exact same thing until I read this and this. A little hot water on top of the soap, a lot of swirling on top of the soap, a lot of swirling in the bowl (until your wrists cramp), a little more water, a lot more swirling...and soon you're up to your elbows in lather.

I just saw those threads the other day, and they have made a great difference in my lather. It's still not as good as I think it should be, but it's very close. Thanks for pointing these threads out. They should be required reading for all newbies!

This was the WORST shave I've ever had. I wanted to play with the Nationwide Campus razors I just got and paid the price.

I started with the non-adjust and this thing couldn't get close, but did manage to inflict some nicks, I then used the adjustable wide open with better results, but it took the G1 to really clean things up. Talk about some serious razor burn!

The real disappointment with the NC razors is that for another buck or two, they could have been much better razors.
