Not much talk about these, but I recently bought an inexpensive Yama vacuum pot, and I have to say, I think it knocked the Technivorm off the top of my list for non-espresso coffee. The flavors really pop, it's incredibly smooth, and still has a lot of body for being a filtered brewer. I'm very impressed. It's even fun to watch! Now, off to find vintage Cory rods!

Nothing beats the vacuum pot. A $35 Yama stovetop model beats the pants off the $200+ Technivorm every time. They will emphasize different notes in the coffee though.

The cons: fragile (just broke mine, again), a major pain to clean, contents need to be transferred to a different vessel if you want the coffee to stay warm after brewing.

I use the old fashioned stainless steel variety, I haven't broken it yet. I just wash mine out with hot water and a dish washing brush.

I got a Yama for Christmas figuring that it would be a weekend treat since it is a little more time consuming to use. However, my wife loves the coffee brewed with it so much she refuses to use anything else.

We haven't broken it yet....knock on wood.:001_smile

I've been using a Bodum Santos for a couple years and I love it. I switch a press every so often but I love the vac. It's like magic with fresh roast.

Scotto, yes, I was actually quite surprised at the difference between the vacuum pot and the TV. It was like I tasted coffee all over again. The last time I experienced this was at Din's shop in Portland. I can still taste that coffee and the vacuum pot is the closest I've come to recreating it at home.

There is a fun learning curve. I have been surprised at how different beans and roasts can actually change the brew time.

I have the urge to buy more pots now. Are there any differences in brew quality with different models?

++1 on this... Get an older model from an antiques store and never have to buy another again.

I have one my Mom bought me years ago at a "junk shop" outside of New Orleans and it is still my go to pot.

Which is saying something as I kinda have a collection of coffee pots.

The brew from my vacuum pot is always smooth and it brings out more of the earthy flavors in the coffee, IMHO. No big deal on storing as it is usually gone fast or transfered to a thermal caraffe, like everything else.

But then you'd miss the fun of watching the water woosh up and the coffee woosh down.

Nah. I have no need when you're within a 17 hour drive.
