I feel like I can only get 3 comfortable shaves out of a DE. The 4th is just painful.
I've tried Merkur and Lord.
I guess it isn't that much money... But maybe just my hair is that much tougher?

First, try a few more blades. Not many folks here are fans of Merkur blades.
Second, don't worry about throwing away blades after three shaves. That's not out of range, and I usually drop my blades after 3 or 4 shaves too.
It's not worth "sticking it out" for a fifth shave; blades are inexpensive. Enjoy your shaves!

I toss mine after two or three regardless of the blade make, so you're actually in pretty good shape with blade longevity. But I echo Soapbox's comments about trying more blades.

I agree..... the whole point it to enjoy the "YOU" time. Do not be shy about dumping the blades when it gets unconfortable. The blade police will not knock at your door.

Three shaves means each at about $0.05. I think that's real value and I don't think you should try for more. I toss the blade at three and am very happy.
