Ok, I read posts about Rooney brushes referring to them such as 3/1 or 1/1. I understand the first digit to be the style, but what is the second digit? I'm assuming it refers to size, is '1' small or large?

yes, it indicates size. 1=small, 2=medium, 3=large.

Look at the Heritage line as well as long as you're looking at the Rooneys. The brushes are very dense and the softest of the entire Rooney line. They're a bit more expensive than the Super badger, but worth it, IMHO.

I notice that they are indeed higher in price, although I am a firm believer in value for money and willing to spend more if the product has a long life. If I placed an order for a Heritage model, how long should I expect to use it?

10-20+ years, I would say. Longer if you have more brushes in a rotation...

I've got a Heritage Beehive, and love it.

The rule of thumb I've heard is that you can expect 10 years' service from a brush. Obviously, more brushes will increase each other's life expectancy (and just like leather shoes, I believe that brushes live longer with a day or two to rest in between uses ... three brushes each used every third day will last more than 3x longer than one brush ... )
