View Full Version : How do you shave when you are pressed for time?

Say you NEED to shave but don't have the time for your DE shave?
I've tried to rush with a DE and I have nicked myself, which puts me back even more.
The obvious answer is to give myself more time, but sometimes that's not an option.
When I use my Slant, I am BBS and I enjoy every minute of it. When I use my Merkur classic, it takes some time as it doesn't seem to be aggressive enough and always leaves stubble, but even that I can't rush with.
So what to do?
Use a Gillette Fusion or something for the days that need rushing?

I won't use anything but a straight or a DE out of stubborness. I try to forsee a rushed morning, and if I don't think I'll have time to shave, I do an extra BBS shave before bed the night before.

Honestly if I don't have time, I just skip it. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but truthfully it's what I do. My slow growth allows me to get away with this though so there you go.
I never skimp on the shave. I'll cut time elsewhere if I've overslept (rare, but the only thing that would cut into shave time). A banana instead of a full breakfast, cut a few minutes off the dog's walk, get to work a few minutes late.
I won't skimp on my shave. Ever.
If pushed to the wall (as in "your house is burning down"), I would just skip it, as Eagle suggests.

I recently trained the "What if..." scenario and I've got a dfs in under 10 minutes including cleaning up.
I filled my sink with hot tap water and put the badger in. With this water I rinsed my face and after that I took the brush out. Next I put the shaving cream (Speick) onto my face with my fingers and lathered up. Then the Progress(4)/Derby combo at took the beard off. I rinsed my face after the first pass with the water out of my sink, you could aswell take fresh water from the tap. Emptied my sink, washed my face with cold water, and cleaned my gear. Then I splashed some Old Spice on and I was ready.
I've got a feeling that typing this text took langer than the shave itself, at last the shave was more enjoyable than the typing. :001_huh:

Then I simply don't shave. I'd rather have stubble than irritation.
This is n/a for me, anyway. I shave at night, relaxing and taking my time. I get a slight shadow the following afternoon, but by no means look unkempt.

I've been rushed a few times, but even with the straight I can move quickly albeit I'm way more aware than I ever used to be of what I'm doing and knowing I'm rushed I am extra cautious about blade control. Deliberate is probably the right word for the exercise, a no nonsense shave. I have shaved in just about 5 minutes with the straight and come away unharmed. But the soap isn't as hot or as fluffy as it might be, or something else detracts from the enjoyment, or I have to buy breakfast instead of make it.
Rushing is certainly not enjoyable by any stretch,

If I am really rushed for time I'll just face lather and do two passes instead of three which leaves me passible but not BBS....Work day shave I guess..:001_rolle

Shave stick and three passes with a DE gets me out quicker than a full on straight shave, about 10 minutes or so. That's for camp, where the shower facilities are communal, or when I'm visiting someone else's home and don't want to hog the bathroom.

If rushed, I first use a DE rather than one of my straights. Then I may reduce the number of passes from four to three to two depending on time. OK, I am admitting that I am not as quick with my straight than with my DE. However, my DE is a slant and I get a really nice shave. One day, I will be as quick with my straight.

I don't have to shave for my job, so many days I don't bother, even when I have plenty of time.
The only time when shaving is mandatory for me is when I'm getting styled up for a night out on town. Even then, I'm in no hurry, and I get everything done in about 5~10 minutes.
Even on those rare occasions when I'm in a rush, I don't like to skip any steps, because I've found that leaving anything out produces unsatisfactory results.
I'm another one pass with cream guy. I can do a pretty decent job in just about 3 minutes.

I do a quick face lather and 1 pass + problem areas. Or I just skip in which case I will look like a bear by noon...and thats ok.

If you need to take a shower and save maximum time, then I would recommend shaving in the shower with a brushless cream and your favorite gentle DE. A two minute shower followed by one WTG pass and if you have time follow that with a second XTG pass. With a gentle DE you can mow down the growth to a presentable level without much fear of nicking. Alternatively you can take more time and shave the night before, but presumably you are asking about the times when one hasn't planned ahead and just need to hit the road ASAP. Otherwise I would just skip the shave altogether.

I should clarify, a gentle DE will vary by person and blade combination, but in my case something like a Gillette flare tip super speed with a Derby blade, or an adjustable dialed all the way down to minimal blade exposure. I haven't tried this alone by itself, but I suspect lathering with Edge Gel (canned goo) will also provide more cushioning...the shave will not be as close but you are also less likely to nick. The reason I say this is that in the past when I was experimenting and had trouble generating proper lather with a couple of shaving soaps I would top them off with old stock of edge gel and found it almost too cushioning, as if I couldn't get the blade close enough to the whiskers to get a close shave. Just something to consider.

Like others, I'll just skip it because my job doesn't require that I look super presentable. But honestly, I like to take my time with things, and would rather not do something if I have to rush it - especially something that I choose to do because I enjoy it.

My super hurried shave is a face lather and a one pass(WTG) with a tech. It's about impossible to gouge up your face this way. It's also not a terribly close shave. Thankfully, I have only had 3 such shaves since I began wetshaving.:001_rolle

If I know in advance that I won't have time to shave in the morning: shave the night before.
If I find myself pressed for time unexpectedly: either a one pass WTG shave or skip shaving altogether.
I don't think reaching for a cartridge razor will be good for anything. A single pass WTG with a Mach III isn't closer than a single pass WTG with a Merkur HD/Gillette Platinum. At least not for me.

Just so happens that I was rushed this morning. Simply used the disposable shavers I have and kept the DE razor in the cabinet.

A fast shave for me is about 10 minutes.
1. Splash hot water on my face while I fill up my scuttle and soak the brush
2. Apply Proraso Pre/Post
3. Build lather with cream
4. WTG, XTG pass
5. Quick clean-up ATG on the neck (J-Hook on the neck)
6. Aqua Velva
Best results are with either a Slim set to 7, Rocket, Parat, or 40's SS paired with UK Wilkies, Crystals, Feathers, or Gillette 7 0'Clock Green Box.

When I don't have time I don't shave, ever! That is why I usually shave in the evening after my kids are put to bed. I would really hate to shave during rush-hour in the morning in our bathroom with my kids running around and my wife trying to catch them.

A quick shave for me would be 5 - 6 minutes using a shave stick, worked in with a brush and two passes using my Mergress on setting #3.
I typically use a straight, so my quick go to instrument is the DE.

I'm in the one pass, face lather with cream group. I honestly never nick myself, no matter how fast I go. I also don't use anything super sharp though.
Show up late or show up fuzzy, just don't show up bleeding.
If I really am in hurry for a shave, then the Schick Injector is my go to razor. No real effort is needed to maintain a proper blade angle which allows for a faster pass. The Injector razors are also somewhat forgiving when it comes to pressure, where the real risk is irritation instead of cuts like you would get with a DE.

NB Replenishing brushless, then slap on some Musgo Real Classic A/S. I've been getting such good shaves this way sometimes that it's tempted me to set my brush aside.

I either use a Mach 3, or I use my DE but instead of using a brush and my Tabac soap, I use Neutrogena skin clearing shave cream out of the tube. I don't skip my homemade shave oil though (50/50 mix of castor & olive oil), 'coz my skin is too sensitive for a DE otherwise.

Lets start with my sig, festina lente, My admittedly limited experience of 40+ years is that getting into a rush does not get me to work or to an appointment any faster than moving at a deliberate pace and hitting all of the marks.
What usually happens to me is that in the mad rush I start to forget things like the keys to the truck, the door pass for the office, the bills that needed to be mailed today without fail, ....
The other way to describe what happens to me when I start to rush is an old Pennsylvania Dutch (Really German) proverb.
:lol:The hurrier I go the behinder I get.
I'm pretty lucky, I can call my boss tell him that I am running late and work off the time at the other end of the day.

I just use my straight faster. My usual straight shave is only 7 or 8 minutes. If I'm in a rush, I just do a single WTG pass and a quick blade buffing with water along the jaw line.

I really can't get going in the morning without a shower, so ten more minutes for a decent shave isn't really much of an issue. I suppose if I totally overslept I could get by with a sponge off and no shave, but I'd feel like crap all day.
I get up early enough I even have time to check my email and boards. Not a kid staying out all night anymore!

I've got like 29 cans of Edge goo left (untaken samples from a college athletic dept where my late father in law worked as a janitor) and a Mach 3. If really rushed for time I can get a fast WTG/XTG/ATG shave and using proper techniques learned here (not putting pressure on the blade) and getting the right amount of water in the goo, I can get a mostly BBS and irritation free shave out of it.. (DFS was the term I think introduced recently )

I sometimes wonder if many people use it straight out of the can with no water added to it. Without water it is way too dry (the instructions do say to add water, or at least used to) and I can imagine it getting terrible reviews if you didn't. While I don't rate it as highly as any of the soaps or creams for use with a brush, I certainly don't think it is nearly as bad as it gets made out to be. (Though I'm certainly not encouraging anyone to go out and buy a can either.)

Makes sense; some people use them without water because it foams up with the air (but a dry foam), and therefore think they don't have to add water.
When it comes to canned gels, I prefer those that have Glycerin (for example, the Edge Sensitive doesn't have Glycerin, but the Edge Extra Protection does have some and it's better than the Sensitive)
Now, because of you, I'm gonna buy 10 cans of Edge

Better stock now, because in 50 years, cans will be looked as good old school shaving products, and you will have to order online
For a fast shave I use an Injector and a shaving stick, for lighting fast - a can of Proraso and a TrackII can't be beat
