View Full Version : My wife is rolling her eyes at me.

My little shaving anecdote thus far:
I started out in my teens with an electric, and then moved to disposables, and even later to the Mach 3. The Mach 3 was probably the closest shave I'd ever had, but lately I'd been feeling the pain of spending all that money on refills. I thought there had to be a better option.
A little research, and I wind up here. I read, read some more, window shopped, and finally started clicking "Buy Now" buttons and got a nice Merkur 38C and an Art of Shaving starter kit. My first shave was about average. I took it easy for a week or so, since I tend to get razor burn if I even THINK about doing anything different. Then I started multiple passes in different directions, and I was hooked. I bought one of the sample packs from John at West Coast Shaving, and naturally threw a Feather in there to try out first.
Oh my. I didn't even feel the hairs being cut. I never got so much as a little nick, and it was as though the hairs had been lasered off. Even my wife was impressed. Finally!
Now she rolls her eyes at me while I'm lathering up and spending a lot of extra time doing something I used to do as fast as possible just to get it over with. She says I "get ready like a girl" since I'm taking a lot more time to shave. But she does say my face is nice and smooth :D
Now to convince her to get me a fancy chrome brush and razor stand.

You're getting ready like a man! My wife had a similar reaction (bemused expression and rolling of eyes) but when I let my stubble grow for a few days she admitted that she didn't like it anymore now that she'd gotten used to my smooth visage. :-)

heh, my GF also rolled her eyes when I started with DE several months ago, now she loves the BBS shaves and the scent of the after shave balm, (nivea), and....she has allocated me more shelf space for my RAD, that must mean something

Yes, I'm expecting the same reaction from my wife. It may seem girly but as far as I'm concerned, if OUR curse is to have facial hair - and most women don't like beards, moustaches and stubble (don't blame them) - then I believe we have a perfect right to give ourselves the best shave that we possibly can. Why should we suffer razor bumps and burns and cuts? Most of us probably don't use makeup, anti-cellulite creams, dermabrasion, spend loads at the hairdressers, hair serums etc - why shouldn't we indulge ourselves at our daily chore?
Women often look at other men and think hmmm... he's yummy, nice skin, no zits, nice 6 pack - but then might think we're being silly for trying to groom ourselves well and get fit.
Does anyone else feel this?

My wife likes the smooth mug, plus I don't complain about her changing her hair color at the drop of a hat or her Imelda Marcos like collection of shoes (I comment about being married to a centepide) O.K. maybe I do complain :em2300: BTW don't forget about the newbie givaway from Susie Bubbles at http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=54684

Interesting....
My wife restored & honed a couple of old strait razors for me and encouraged me to get a really nice Thier-Issard.
When I initially switched from Mach3 to a DE, some years ago, she did not pay much attention at all. When I finally switched to a straight razor I got total support and more love. :001_smile
Of course she loved knifes all along and straight razors are very beautiful and extra sharps 'knifes'.

Dude you should marry your wife again WOW!!!
The lady honed some of your straight razors, now that's a wife Congrats
They never understand our addictions :lol: Although my GF is fully supportive I know she still rolls her eyes like why does he need another brush or razor or shaving mug or he has 10 soaps and 5 tubes of shaving cream why does he keep buying more :lol:

Sir, welcome to the club. My wife used to roll her eyes and even though she loves my smooth face she would get a little cranky when another package showed up at the door ( I think that started after about the 50th or 60th razor) not to mention the hours spent here on B&B...:blushing:
Anyway, once she got her very own Pink Star Ladies Gillette everything changed. Now it takes her even longer to get ready because she spends so much time sniffing the stock of soaps and creams trying to figure out which one she's going to use next....
Enjoy her "rolling the eyes" phase, as it will eventually be replaced with a "sharpening the axe" phase. :001_rolle

When I first met my wife she thought it was cute that I used a brush and soap, she said she'd always thought the man she's marry would use a brush and soap. However, she's a little perplexed about the whole idea of me stocking up on products for the variety of it.
I have to say, I do hope to settle on a few core items eventually, but for now, I just say it's in fun, and I'm not spending a heck of a lot either...

My wife supports my habit and now I've got her shaving her legs with a mint Lady Gillette I picked up. Even taught her how to make lather. She used my super badger and TOBS lavender...OH CRAP !!!...what have I done? There goes my TOBS creams, blades, brush. 'Sharing is caring' but damn!!!, I'll have to take out another loan. Was wondering...do they have a DE 12-step program?

When explaining how this is cheaper then those cartridges (I was already using soap and brush) she just said that's fine, just keep justifying it to yourself with buying all those blades and multiple razors.

If it gets to the point where she gives you too much flack, and it starts to get on your nerves: (half-serious)
Grow a beard for a while. "Hey, you didn't like the way I was shaving..."
If she is a beard hater (or a beard "tolerator" like my wife is/was), your beard will drive her nuts.
When you finally shave it off, she'll never again complain about the length of your routine, even if you spend 3 hours shaving each day. Lifetime cure.

Hey Mason,
I remember not long ago you were on the williams, boar brush, and atras routine, said you saved a lot of money that way... what other stuff did you get?

I think wives are taken aback when we start spending times on our own grooming and are not quite sure what to think. She gave me her biggest eyebrow raise when she asked what I was doing online and I told her talking to other guys about shaving!

Well ALL the woman I have known past and present have had a shoe fetish, what is it with woman and shoes ?, then of course there are the Hand bags one for every occasion which has to match the shoes and belts, now imagine the vast collection of leather. Clothes, for winter, for summer, for spring, for autumn and for S.A.W.S. that's all the seasons combined.
My GF has approximately 50 square meters for her "necessities which is almost half our living space, so I guess a extra little shelf and 10 minutes longer in the bathroom, (where she takes forever), is not much of a trade off and there's no need to feel guilty of liking to take a leisurely shave, Woman will always have the upper hand in the vanity stakes, so never feel guilty of the 10 razors and 10 minutes extra in the bathroom.

I don't understand why some guys' wives get in a tissy when they spend time and money on shaving. Don't they want you to have a smooth face? My wife fully supports my shaving endeavors.

Like a girl? I haven't seen any girls shaving their face. If they did, that would be rather scary

Hah, unfortunately she knows I won't go for a full beard. I tried it once a while back and it looked like I had mange on my face.
She's really mostly just teasing me, like good wives do. She really has been impressed with the shaves I get now. Plus, our 2 year old thinks it's hilarious when I'm lathering up; he just shrieks and laughs while I'm doing it. One of these days I'll lather his cheeks up and do a pretend shave on him. He'll love it.

This is so funny. My wife did the exact same thing! Then she started asking, "If this way is so great, then why do you have to shave 6 times to get it smooth!?" I had to explain the process, then she understood a little bit more. I also told her if shaving this way is so girly, then go watch an old classic film from the 30s or 40s and see how men shaved then. That was back in the day when Men were MEN. She then admitted there was something sexy about how I was mixing lather in a bowl while wearing a towel after my shower! Success!

the amount of time some/most spend online at this site probably sets their minds at ease (wives), but changing grooming habits and/or working out are red flags for an affair

Try mixing lather without the towel. Worked for me.

My GF teases me about all the products i have been purchasing and the straight fact that I went into C&E to make a purchase twice and am now and preferred customer but in the end she reads these forums too and I overheard her telling one of her friends that she thinks it really is interesting and that my face is smoother. My GF always used to say everyday you need to shave she hates the stubble and now she is happy with my smooth face. So she doesn't complain. Plus she has a major shoe/clothes/bag/and makeup/ and all other product AD so it evens out...

Same experience here. Plus, the wife thought it was even sexier when I let her in on the fact that I was saving a nice chunk of change on the blades.
I casually left out the fact that guys have repeatedly warned me about the incoming disorders, though:001_smile

Ender: that's a great point. I never thought about changing habits being a sign of infidelity.

That's funny, I had a similar situation here. I brought home some C&E stuff to try this weekend and she thought it was a little gift for her. Ooops. Quick trip BACK to C&E, get something for her: marital bliss.

Thats too funny I took her in with me the first time and then asked her to carry the bag around the mall, so I took some heat for that then the second time we went my mom was with me and she just walked around shaking her head...
