This forum has had a reverse effect on me. I have posted before in regards to always shaving with a DE, as taught by my Dad. So, for the last twenty years I have used a DE or a Bic disposable, and Barbasol one pass with pressure. After reading here about the latest, greatest, hated Fusion, I purchased one over the weekend mostly out of curiosity. Having used it this morning, I am 100% sold on it if I ever have the need for extreme razor burn. It is almost 10 pm and I still feel the ting of razor burn. Are they not very sharp, or is it just from having so many blades in a row cutting at once?

Why must it be either/or. In this case it could very well be and/both - too many blades cutting at once, and not being very sharp.

Hmmmmmmm, don't know...Never tried one, never will. I am glad you did as it is one more reason for me not to try one.
I'm sorry you've been burned.....

I used to use a fusion....i.e. I used it up until about 20 min ago when I had my first experience with a DE. I always thought that the fusion was pretty good but I've never had a BBS shave until now....I'm hooked on DE's.

At roughly $30 for replacement cartridges your face isn't the only thing burning...I'm thinking hole-in-wallet :mad3:

I think cartridge razors take the skill out of shaving, but they still give a great shave with the right prep.I still use one occasionally and get fantastic results. They have not become the people's choice because of the acceptance of mediocrity or the power of advertising,it's because they are a convenient but rather pricy tool that gets a job done!I won't give up my D/Es and S/Es to use cartridges on a daily basis because I love using vintage razors, but the new technology is here to stay and most people are quite happy with the results they get when using it.

For me, multi blade cartridges proved to be painfully expensive. First 2 blades, then 3, 4, and 5... and the price keeps going up too, along with the rising tendency for irritation.

Another case where more is not better, just my 2 cents.

well I don't think it is that the blades are too dull, Gillette was featured on Modern Marvels a while back and the history chanel said that they were the sharpest blades in the world. I think it is mostly the number of blades scraping across your face, and the last four blades are after any lubrication is gone from the first blade.

I think there's something to this; Mr Gillette commented on the same thing a few weeks ago; if you allow that each blade is touching your face, then after the first or second blade, you've got no lathering product at all on your face.

I think a better prep (i.e. ditch the canned goo) would help this situation, but I'm not going to spend $13 to find out.

Me too -- though some folks around here (burrrrrnwooooood!) got good shaves with their cartridge razors too, probably because of good prep. Though Ray has recently seen the light and started using a DE razor or two.

I'm curious what would happen if someone from Gillette stumbled upon these boards. What would the next generation of cartridge razor feature? A 1:1 ratio of lubricating strips to blades?

Or, better yet (or more amusingly, you be the judge) a handle that was filled with whatever goo you were using, and you squeezed it out slightly as you shaved to keep the entire cartridge lubricated.

Or maybe they'll put a "microbrush" on the front to "really help lather" before the blades come.

Maybe I'm a marketing genius.:001_rolle:lol::lol:

In terms of Gillette blades being the "sharpest" blades in the world, did the History channel offer any scientific evidence to support that claim? Or did they just throw it out there for a soundbite? After all, if Gillette was the "feature" on the show...I wonder if perhaps Gillette's marketing team had anything to do with that...

Maybe we'd better stop you before you give Gillette too many frivolous ideas! I can see several of these being implemented; they can't add more blades (famous last words), though I think some Korean company has a six-blade cartridge.

That was the part that made me a little sad as I was writing those ideas... I realized that as funny as they must be to us, they're not altogether out of the realm of possibilities for a company that only really keeps an eye to profit margins. I imagine those lubricating strips are cheap as hell, and they could probably tack another $1 per cartridge at a minimum for sticking them on there, and people would be foolish enough to buy them.

Personally, I'm really just waiting for the day they build an AM/FM radio into the handle.

Gillettes next blade will feature

1. Six blades with lube strips between each blade
2. Vibration technology
3. Maybe add in some ultrasonic vibration like the toothbrush
4. A hot lather dispenser built into the handle

retail price $49.99, cartridges sold seperately $19.99 :a41:

All in all they will never compare with a single blade DE and badger brush !!

Those little strips are so cheap, as are the rubbery fins designed to stretch your skin, but they sell razor blades. Sigh.

Have you seen the size of the new iPod shuffles? Those things (their components, I mean) would fit easily into a Fusion vibrating handle. Sync your razor and rock out while you shave! Now with Bluetooth technology!

I haven't seen any comment on the "new" Gillette Breeze here though. It consist of a huge lubricating, uh, spunge at either ends of the blades. Including lubricating strip before and after the blades. WHAT is the point of having a lubricating strip AND SPONGE after you've passed the area?

Didn't Norelco do this with their electrics? I'm pretty sure they had a razor that had a goop dispenser built in.

I have two telephones in my home.......both were made in Chicago in 1941.

I used cordless, plastic, pieces of crap for 20 years before I finally got tired of replacing my Chinese made phones every couple of years.

Now I am tethered when I get a phone call and have to take the time to spin the rotary when making an outgoing:rolleyes:, but I hear beautiful brass bells ringing when a call comes in and.....I am using incredibly well constructed, American made products built to last a life time whenever I talk on the phone....with receivers weighty enough to immobilize home invaders.

As for the being tethered thing.......if you have me on the phone for more than 5 minutes you just got me for 3 minutes longer than most folks!
