NEW Old Saw

Hi All,

Well the contest drew me out and I was forced to join. Anyway, I'm somewhat of an old saw at this wet shaving business, not necessarily old. I've been lathering my face for over 20 years now and have recently enjoyed finding new shopping leads here at B&B.

My first mug and soap was an Old Spice set I bought at the Navy Exchange in the mid 80's. I am still using that mug today. I can't remember if the brush was in the box with the set or if it was a Surrey that I bought separately. Anyway, it is the best boar brush I have ever felt and I still use it on weekends at my cottage where it resides in a custom made lather bowl that MBW (my beloved wife) gave me. She had a friend of ours make it special just for me.

My regular brush is a badger brush that I bought while on vacation to the Twin Cities about 15 years ago. I remember thinking $30.00 was a lot of money to spend on a brush. I think it might be a Colonel Conk but all the lettering is worn off. I'll have to post some pic's of these relics.

My current whisker chopping machine is a 1956 Gillette Super Speed that I bought at a garage sale for a dime. When I asked about the price she said "ten". So I started to reach for my wallet but stopped short and said, "Excuse me?" To which she replied, "Ten cents". While I may have chiseled over $10.00, I felt it would be just plain rude to chisel over a dime, so I reached in my pocket pulled out a dime and paid the lady.

In addition to wet shaving with a DE razor, I have tired of watches with batteries and now wear a Hamilton automatic, most days that I mow the lawn I ignore the gas powered mower and use my Scotts manual reel mower and have parked a Henry Kloss Model One radio (can't find the on/off/volume on anything else these days) on my desk at work. The simple things just work.

I love those stories ! Ive heard from my source yes that we overpay way too much for razors at the 'Bay" I mean 10 cents ! hilarious .
My source is is a guy who runs also a hardware Antique shop and found me a DE razor which he provided me for free ,thats even a better price ! Free.
I have no idea what razor it is package is still underway, will have to see, I provided him with the Gillette sticky post picture we have here so he can hunt me some razors obvious he comes at alot of garage/stock sales since he is an antique dealer.

20 years ! I wish I could have said im doing this for 2 years..im not even at 1 year.

my source also said everyhing in USA is now plastic and throw away. what a sad case of scenario people using throw away razors ? I hope he is wrong cant be that SAD ! but it corresponds to the dime spend on a superspeed.

Re: watches. I have settled finally on a Casio G-Shock Wave Ceptor digital. It resets itself every night from the NIST broadcast giving the atomic clock time, so it's totally accurate---and part of the face is a solar cell, so there is no battery to replace: it recharges itself in regular daylight. Great watch, if you like digital (as I do). Also very simple to change timezones when traveling. Day, date, alarms, stopwatch, etc.

I have one of the G-Shock Watches too Michael. They are TANKS. I'm always working around spots where I smack the hell out of it, but it keeps on tickin!

hey, Mike- I am on my 2nd g-shock.Why? because the battery ran down on the first one after 5 years and I couldn't locate it by its beeps. They are definitely tanks.

well, that beats my super speed for $10...nice pick up. i too share your sentiments about the simple things in life are usually better. stick with buttons (zippers are a passing fad) and why use batteries when you don't need them? :biggrin:

Sounds like a great watch. My brother has an EcoDrive, (I think that's what it is called), by Citizen, that I think is similar. In my ham radio days I would have loved a watch like that. I'm still kind of anal about time but just don't have a need for another watch, desire on the other hand is always there. ;)

Just an aside. The Henry Kloss Model One desk radio is actually very high tech with great sound. You just don't need a degree to operate it. The simplicity is on the outside; a 3 position switch, volume control and a fantastically smooth tuner knob.

also im glad to see there are so many G shock fans here too. i used to wear timex but every time i would get in a fight it seemed like my watch would get scratched or broken. my first G shock lasted me 7 years before the battery died (i often bragged that the thing could take a bullet for me). i just bought the same one leisureguy has. also as amazing as it sounds i gave my old G shock to my Pitbull as a toy..... the band didn't make it but the face still looks almost new!

Every clock in the house (including my watch) is radio-controlled, so I never have to reset when the time changes. I feel smug twice a year. :001_smile (The car clock, though, does have to be reset by hand. :sad: )

lol na they are probably the most misunderstood animals out there. ignore what your hear in the media and look up stats or talk to a vet. youll find that attacks by "pitbulls" are pretty rare compared to say retrivers or spaniels. also note that almost all "pitbull" attacks are commited by mixed breed dogs which may or may not be Pitbulls (APBT, Amstaff,SBT,BT).

see the thing that makes them scary to most people is also the thing that makes them one of the safest dogs to own. imagine you just created the the perfect fighting dog. what is the one thing you dont want to happen? the dog turn on you right? over the same 200 years or so that these dogs were bred to fight they were also bred to not bite people.

i have been around these dogs a long time (a friend of mine is a breeder) and have never seen one bite even out of self defense (and no matter how rough the kids were playing with it). seriously the feather is waaaaaay scarier:biggrin:

My mother had a tenant in her basement apartment who had a pit. Sweet dog actually, although the first time she saw me, she charged me. Probably because I was messing around in the garage, which she considered her territory, and she had never seen me before. A little bit scary, to say the least, but I held my ground and she pulled up a couple feet away. She did have to be put down a couple of years later for biting someone. I do not know the circumstances, though, so it is quite possible that she was provoked.

Generally, though, I suspect they do have a rather unfair rap. My aunt, a vet, considers them fine to work on. The only dog breed she absolutely does not trust is Chow. No other dog has ever tried to bite her, but Chows have several times, and usually without warning.

My vet has been bitten by German Shepherds several times. He doesn't like the fact that they give no warning, they just bite.

I've been bitten by an English Sheepdog and a Chihuahua.

I've also been bitten by a Wire Hair Terrier and a West Highland Terrier.

Just lucky I guess.

I guess that's what made me laugh so much at that comment... a watch's ability to survive a fight probably doesn't enter into my thought process when purchasing!:lol:

Oh I know...my first thought was wow...how many fights are you getting into when that is part of the decision making process for buying a watch? Then I thought well...maybe there is a logical reason. If it is the first it is pretty funny...

yes i am a cop (sheriff's deputy actually) when i was typing that it never cross my mind that it sounded weird, but now it is kinda funny. i would say now that i have an office job those days are behind me but just this hour i had two (broke one up between two guys and less than 15 min later had a guy attack me.)
