I've got a Canon Powershot A550, shouldn't I be able to take pictures clear enough to post?

I find razors are a pain in the ass to photograph without a macro lens. The only two things I've found to work are a completely white background and only using natural light. I still don't get great results, but they're better than those pictures where you can't tell whether it's a razor or a picnic table.

Tripod and good light can go a long way. Use your timer to take the picture to avoid shake.

Thanks for some tips to help us 'photog wanna-bes'. I've got a decent camera that should take OK pics for posting shaving paraphernalia. Now, to learn how to use the darn thing! Where's my grandson? I'm sure he can figure this thing out!

I rely on my granddaughter to figure out electronics.

Too true. I am still in an eBay dispute for that gold 1940's Gillette picnic table I got stuck with.
It's not like it isn't nice, there just isn't ANY way to get it in the case.

I'm sending you a bill for cleaning the food I spit out off my desk.

Sorry, but the rule in Texas is that the initiator only pays if Dr. Pepper shoots out your nose.

I find that it is really hard to take good pics of shaving stuff unless you have a more manual camera. Before I got my Canon Powershot G9, every shot I took was blurry. Now I have full manual controlls and can take great pictures.

Mytips for great pics:
On point and shoot cameras, it is best to engage the macro-focus button, which usually looks like a flower

Also with Canon cameras, make sure you push the button HALF way down till it focuses, then push it all the way down to release the shutter. Most people don't know that Canon cameras do this.
Avoid using the built in flash- instead use natural or several types of 'white' light inside from different angles.

Also use a low ISO speed

MOST cameras do this. My D80 (Nikon) sure does, my previous A75 (Canon), my sister's Sony, my mom's Kodak, even my old Canon 35mm point-and-shoot from the 80s.

The lack of a cable release on today's camera's, especially point and shoots, makes some things tougher. The timer release is the way to get around this. You wouldn't believe how much this and a tripod will help.

You hit the nail on the head my friend. You can buy a $5,000.00 body and several $2,000.00 lenses, but if you don't know how to work the hardware you still will not be able to take a photo as good as an experienced photographer will take with a pinhole camera.
Read the manual.....join a photo forum and learn to use your camera in modes other than full auto. There's no quick fix. Photography is an art and should be approached as such.
