Introducing the B&B Limited Edition 2008...
Pictures, Information, Ordering instructions - all the info you'd want to know about the B&B 2008....
After a long - LONG wait, here she is fellas, the B&B 2008 Limited. It will be a completely bespoke brush handmade by Kent of London, it will feature their most luxuriously sourced SilverTipped hair, and it will be triple dense/stuffed. The knot diameter will be similar to that of a BK4 (but better hair and triple stuffed) with a shorter loft - making it the typical ultra-luxurious Kent, however unlike any luxurious kent - will sport a hefty dose of backbone from the lowered loft and super dense knot. Think of this as a much more luxurious, better looking, and more ergonomic chubby. (Note: pics with the blue background are ALL post-bloom)
The production versions will have the full kent regalia (beautiful logo, and gorgeous red presentation box/tube) and be marked "Badger & Blade" with "Limited Edition 2008" underneath it. This brush is absolutely gorgeous, and is perhaps the most striking brush I've experienced, in terms of its appearance, feel, balance, and presence. It also doesn't hurt that it's the most luxurious brush i've ever experienced to boot. This is to brushes, what the Rolls Royce Phantom is to cars.

Specs: 57mm handle, 45mm loft, about a 20.5mm super dense knot of first quality silvertip (very soft, with a creamy white tip).

Pre-Bloom Photos...
(Again, remember the pics above/below with the blue background are ALL post-bloom)
Notice the base of the knot - SUPER beefy, and stuffed full of hair...

Comparison Pics...
Simpson Chubby 2 Super & B&B LE 2008
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=13291
The bigger knot of the chubby 2 is still denser.... but not by much....
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=13292
B&B LE 2006 & B&B LE 2008
Notice the tremendous size difference - especially the loft....
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=13293
Wildly denser and more compact head on the 2008 (Read: no flop)....
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=13294
2 band Simpson Tulip 2 Super & B&B LE 2008
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=13295
This particular Simpson has a SUPER thick 2 band hair, so it doesn't splay at all, so it appears denser, however they're pretty equal - if anything the B&B is a little denser....
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=13296
Plisson European White #12 & B&B LE 2008
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=13306
Much denser, with a more compact head than the Plisson...

Order Info - READ CAREFULLY!
Like the B&B Limited 2006, the order period will be limited. Brushes will be pre-ordered and pre-paid starting today for about one month (no limit on the number of brushes you buy). After the pre-order period, the run will be closed (NOTE: AFTER THE TIME BOXED PRE-ORDER PERIOD, YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO PURCHASE/ORDER THE BRUSH - NO EXCEPTIONS!) and the brushes will go into handmade production. We expect them to be in your hot little hands approximately 2 months from now.
The specifics - unfortunately (for Nick and I) due to the absurdly low pricing, the manufacturer will not ship/handle the brushes or payment, which mean (sigh) we have to. This also means - you will be placing the pre-orders with Nick and I, we will receive the shipment, then break it up and ship them out to you. If you are not comfortable with this arrangement, we ask that you do not purchase a brush. If you wish to purchase a brush - please read the instructions below VERY carefully. Improperly placed orders can/will be cancelled and refunded without notice and may result in you not receiving a brush.
Payment/Order Info:
(Note: read ALL of the information below before placing your order)
The cost of each brush is $140 (Which factors in the bulk shipping to us, paypal fees, etc) and since we have to front the money for the order - once your order is placed, it is not refundable however if something goes awry and we can't get the brushes, etc - you will receive a refund. Shipping will be a flat $10 for members in the U.S. - and will be calculated on an individual basis for those in other countries, based on our cost.
Note: You will have to create an "account" in the shopping cart system to checkout. Make sure to put your correct shipping information in your "account" as that will be the address it will be shipped to.
The only means of payment right now are paypal. It is unlikely we'll accept other methods, however if you are a "special case" please contact us and we'll try to work something out with a money order or the like.
To order a brush if you are a resident of California - create a gift certificate to/from yourself for $162.38 (The brush, shipping and tax) HERE (http://badgerandblade.com/shop/giftcert.php) making sure to put "B&B Limited 2008" and the date which you placed the order in the "Message" section.
To order a brush if you are in the USA in any state BUT CA - create a gift certificate to/from yourself for $150.00 (The brush and shipping) HERE (http://badgerandblade.com/shop/giftcert.php) making sure to put "B&B Limited 2008" and the date which you placed the order in the "Message" section.
To order a brush if you reside outside of the U.S.A. - create a gift certificate to/from yourself for $140.00 (The price of the brush) HERE (http://badgerandblade.com/shop/giftcert.php) making sure to put "B&B Limited 2008" and the date which you placed the order and the country in which you reside in the "Message" section. Prior to shipping the brushes, we will contact you with the shipment cost to your shipping address. Note: We have to put the value of the shipment on the customs forms - this is non-negotiable.
Special Note: This is NOT the B&B Essential shaving brush - pics/info comparing the two can be found HERE (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=659852#post659852).

Joel,
Thanks for the info. I have two questions. How will these be shipped? UPS or USPS? It makes a difference if you have a PO Box.
Second. How can we handle this if we do not know where we are going to be in two months? Long story short, I am homeless in a little over a month.
Thanks,
Jonathan
The brush is fantastic! :w00t:

Wow $140 is quite a bit higher than the $50 originally planned. I've been out of the loop for a while for this thing though maybe the plans changed somewhere along the line that I didn't take note of.
edit: oops I got this confused with the essential, I just noticed the note at the bottom of the post.
Just bought it. Looks great. This AD can be expensive

Also, am I correct in understanding that they are going to be made to order, and there is no pre-set number of brushes to be produced? So I don't have to worry about putting in my order at this very second.

Yeah, I don't see how that $12.38 would reach the government otherwise. Heck, it'd probably be cheaper to have it shipped to a relative in another state and have that relative ship it to you.
Does this mean B&B is actually a business? It's not just Kent selling to the US and Joel divvying up the brushes? I don't know how tax laws work.
RE-READ the post above carefully - you AREN'T buying the brush from Kent.
Kent will not sell the brushes direct at this price.... we can set it up so they do, and it'll be a hell of a lot less work for us (hell, no work) but you're looking at higher shipping rates (individual brush from UK to you), and paying over $300 for the brush. We can work something out so you purchase yours like this :rolleyes: We're putting in a Herculean amount of effort into setting this up, and will likely have to pack/ship 500+ items - so the berry busting isn't well appreciated.
As stated in the post, if you aren't comfortable with this (and by all means, that's ok with us) please do NOT purchase the brush.

There is no doubt much effort was put forth just to make this brush available to members. I would not want to deal with 500 orders without compensation, but then again if my circumstances were different...who knows.
I feel this could be construed as picky, but, any chance of this beauty being reviewed by an expert? I don't know how the specs were decided upon I am sure the experts got together and hammered it out. It would really help me decide if I saw it in action. Exactly how much lather is this baby going to sport? It seems as if this brush may be better for whipping up soaps than creams due to the stiffness.
With a brush this dense is it even going to dry overnight?
Thanks for putting this deal together and do not react negatively to my post I am just trying to ascertain with whether this brush would be a good value for me.
Ordered. Thanks very much for the effort -- this thing looks gorgeous.

The folks that put this deal together are very experience individuals. If you check out some of Joel and John's (letterk) reviews you'll get a sense of that.
For the other B&B brushes (2006 Limited, Essential) several of the Moderators were given the prototype for evaluation and review. I suspect that will happen again with the 2008 model.

Since when do people not complain about tax?
I should add -- that's not meant to be a comment on the people who put this together, how they're handling things, the price of the brush, or anything of that nature. Just complaining in general about the added price for CA folks, feel free to delete my gripe about the tax if it's offending someone.

Any supposed 'soap' brush will have no trouble when lathering creams. Most people gripe about a soft brush having trouble lathering soap not the other way around.
Even so, my Kent BK8, although soft, works just fine with any soap. Even the very hard triple milled soaps. Kent brushes are awesome, end of story. And to get a custom the likes of this from them, is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. Grab this one by the horns gentlemen, opportunity is knocking!!
Also the brush having a short loft will have no trouble drying, I'm sure. Even if it doesn't dry overnight, what's the big deal. In the summer it may take a week of no use for any of my brushes to dry (even with a dehumidifier helping them along). As long and the brush has been shaken out, you have nothing to worry about.

No hard date - but it will likely be the first of the month. Knowing us - there probably won't be much warning (as we'd like to get the show on the road) but the first of next month is the safest bet.
We will however likely ship/package based on who ordered first - and if we get as many orders as the last brush we did - that could mean getting your brush 2 weeks earlier than the fellas ordering on the last day :smile:

Just not comfortable ordering without knowing shipping costs and method to Canada. (If it's shipped UPS, forget it. Their disservice charges would add 40% to the cost.)
Can we know the shipping cost to Canada? And is it sent via USPS?

Sorry to post this here, but I just tried to create an account and found a rather serrious issue with the account creation form (which I did use the contact form to report, but I just found the exact problem in the JavaScript form checking code).
The problem is in the rubyCheckPobox() function. Here's the offending bit:
if ((b_address_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re) ||
b_address2_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re) &&
ship2diff.checked == false ) ||
(s_address_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re) ||
s_address2_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re) &&
ship2diff.checked == true))
{
alert ('Sorry, but our delivery service does not allow shipping to a PO box. Please enter a physical delivery address.');
return false;
}
That needs to be changed to this (or something similar) so that only the correct fields are looked at when the ship2diff box is checked (or unchecked):
if ((ship2diff.checked == false &&
(b_address_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re) ||
b_address2_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re))) ||
(ship2diff.checked == true &&
(s_address_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re) ||
s_address2_obj.value.toLowerCase().match(re))))
{
alert ('Sorry, but our delivery service does not allow shipping to a PO box. Please enter a physical delivery address.');
return false;
}
It's a subtle logic differnce. The problem is that without the extra parentheses, the logic throws up the alert if that very first condition is met. So, if the billing address is a PO box you'll get this condition.
Yeah, I code for a living. Does it show much?
Update: I found a workaround. In the "Authentication" box on the right side of the page, there's a link that reads, "If Javascript is disabled in your browser click here." Clicking there will allow you to complete registration with a billing address that's a P.O. box.

I think this is a great idea and bravo to the guys that are doing this, but I do have a concern.
Not everyone on B&B has 160.00 to spend on a shaving brush. Although it's apparent that it is a good brush of fine quality, times now, for many, do not allow for luxury purchases of this kind. It's sort of making the gap wider between the haves and have-nots. (or is that "have knots"??):001_rolle
May I suggest the brush buy for next year be more in line to our other brother's budgets out there, who might be wanting a brush of good quality, but can't afford a more higher end offering? There are plently of nice brushes that can be gotten for half the cost, and it could keep people which might feel alienated, simply because they don't have the funds. This is especially true for the newbies, many of them who are students.
Just a thought.

As stated in the post, if you aren't comfortable with this (and by all means, that's ok with us) please do NOT purchase the brush.
Joel,
I've owned a retail business and dealt with the consumer mindset for 15 years and I can tell you that some folks will just never "get it".
You've put together one hell of a great deal here and there should be nothing but love for this effort.
I'm not saying that folks considering this brush shouldn't feel free to ask specific questions, but expressing shock at pricing, moaning about paying CA sales tax etc is insulting IMO.
I'm very new here and really don't want to get off on the wrong foot and upset anyone, but I'd suggest that anyone who doesn't think this is a steal of a deal and who has no appreciation for the fact that this is a *favor* done for members here should just keep their opinions to themselves because frankly........they're way off base.
I just spent the money for a Simpson CH3 last week (slaps forehead), but I will be sure to place my order before this deal closes out.
Thank you.......for your efforts and for bringing a very special $300.00+ brush to the members here for half price!
The best brush Kent sells is $150.00. How does a custom brush fetch twice the price of their top of the line BK12? I know the handle is different, the way the hair is packed is different, the dimensions are different too. They throw in a killer red box with every brush to boot.
The "best" brush kent sells is more than $150. This has better hair, and is completely custom. If you approach Porsche and say you want 75 custom porsches - with a v12 (they don't make a production v12) and different interior/exterior/design -do you think it will be the cost of their standard Porsche? They'd have to re-tool, educate their workers on the new design and how it is to be made, source new materials, create new logos, etc etc.
A standard Kent is mass produced. A B&B kent is a one off sprint run, fully custom/different, with the most prized materials and totally different and unavailable characteristics to their current (or any other makers) offerings. If you want a new razor to your own specs made with superior materials... it has to be custom - and that's more expensive, no? There is no difference here.
Frankly, if you have to ask why, this probably isn't the brush for you - wait for the essential :wink:

The best brush Kent sells is (edit) $187.00. How does a custom brush fetch twice the price of their top of the line BK12?
The BK12 is $192.85 (does not include shipping) on Kent's site. Twice the price of the BK12???
Lets see, this B&B brush is $140 (does not include shipping) and the BK12 is $192.85.
Math:
140/192.85 = 0.72595
So in reality this custom brush "fetches" 72.3% of the price of the "top of the line BK12". What are you smoking?

as an art director, i deal with all sorts of vendors and let me say that to get a company to do a small, custom run of a completely unique item and manage to get their best quality for LESS than the cost of their mainstream product is virtually unheard of.
i'm amazed that this brush can be had for this price. it's a testimony to the work that joel and others have done to will this thing into existence, and i for one think they deserve a huge round of thanks for all their efforts.
i can't wait to experience one for myself.

You make very good points Joel. It is easy sometimes to forget just how much work goes into a product of any sort with our hands off purchasing just run to the store mentality. I am guilty of this and I wish to repent :blushing:, I did not mean to cause such a stir, and I apologize for any ill contrived comments on my part. It is just my nature to question things, once I come to terms with something I can accept it.

C'mon, Joel -- is this brush a Rolls or a Porsche? :tongue:
(Personally, I look at it and see Bugatti Veyron.)
Joel,
I've owned a retail business and dealt with the consumer mindset for 15 years and I can tell you that some folks will just never "get it".

If it wasn't for the price, I'd get one. Can't spend more on shaving stuff untill late autumn :/
Sounds like a great deal for a nice brush tho.
Btw, stop complaining about takes, try importing something like that to Norway, 25% VAT, AND a customs fee between 20$ and 40$. Stupid laws :(

This credit card transaction will appear on your bill as "PAYPAL *BADGERBLADE".
I got another email from the first website asking me to do a few things that didn't make much sense, but unless you guys tell me otherwise, I'll take paypal's word for it that I've paid.

I was ridiculously impressed by the torture test that the 2006 LE was subjected to, so let's see if this one lives up to the same standard.

LOVE this brush!
Just not comfortable ordering without knowing shipping costs and method to Canada. (If it's shipped UPS, forget it. Their disservice charges would add 40% to the cost.)
Can we know the shipping cost to Canada? And is it sent via USPS?
Dang that's a perfect brush...
Does anyone know the answer to this?
I'm estimating around $25 customs, plus Provincial taxes.

I've contacted Joel about this, he thinks mail (USPS), but he isn't sure and the person who might know is on vacation. I ordered mine regardless. If it is USPS I expect postage to be about US$21 and then Canada Customs will collect PST and GST plus a $5 handling charge.

I also took a chance and ordered without knowing the shipping method/cost. Sure hope it's USPS, as shipping via UPS would add at least $30 to the cost (difference being the brokerage fees of $5 for the post office vs estimated $35 for UPS.) PST and GST are additional.
Note another advantage of Postal shipments: items often slip through without being taxed. The lower the value, the more likely they'll slip through tax-free, but I've had $500 items arrive without having to pay tax! With UPS, they ALWAYS collect the taxes (plus their insane brokerage disservice charge.)
$21 sound a bit high to mail a brush to Canada, but if that's what it is, so be it... too late to back out now!

The US$21 postage is my estimate, based on other things I've ordered from the US, e.g. fountain pens. It could be less or it could be more, however, depending on the level of service, e.g. tracking number, amount of insurance and weight. You're right about the UPS brokerage fee, really p's me off. As concerns Canada Customs collecting taxes, the only time I've found them not doing this is at Christmas; for the rest of the year I get dinged with monotonous regularity.

Exactly the same here for France. If a seller uses only UPS, we run away, because of tax -20%VAT+custom taxes+insane brokerage- AND because UPS has already shipping fees that are alone totally crazy for international.
I remember a seller on eBay answering me the UPS fees would be 130USD to ship me a 50USD item. This, without the tax, of course. I never ordered!

I am fairly new to DE shaving. I started with a Weishi razor and the ubiquitous $35 Crabtree & Evelyn Best Badger Brush (made by Edwin Jagger). I got a sampler set of blades (tried Derby, Red Israeli, Feather etc), a simple bowl and so on.
My goal was to get a cheap and gentle set of tools and then upgrade to much better tools once I knew that DE shaving suited me (and it does), keeping the starter set of tools for travel duty. I am in the upgrade process now - last week I got a Edwin Jagger Lined Chatsworth razor which I absolutely love (first shave=best shave in my 25 years of shaving, but not consistent yet), and a nice scuttle is expected next week. I am now thinking of a better brush to become my primary brush for the next few years...
My question is this: the C&E Best Badger Brush seems to do everything I need very well (good lather in under a minute, nice on my face) - what can I look forward to from a better brush? For now I use C&E Shaving Creams and lather in a bowl although I will be trying various soaps and other creams one day.
Can anyone compare the BBB to the likely experience of this B&B Limited Edition 2008 brush (or any other high end brush)?
Similarly can anyone compare the BBB to the new B&B Essential brush? Or the Essential against the Limited Edition?
I will be buying either the Limited Edition or the Essential - money isn't an issue, but I want to make sure I can notice a difference and get value for the dollars spent...
johnniegold
07-17-2008, 07:04 PM
I don't want to appear like I'm being flip, but if money is not an object then for additional $50 or so, you can get both brushes and experience them both for yourself. The Essential is supposed to be a step above the C&E BBB and provide you with a good all-around brush.
The LE '08, aside from its exquisite handle, is supposed to be a very dense brush, yet very soft. With its short loft and density, this brush will be a luxury brush of the highest order. It should work great with creams and be spectacular with soap.
If the sheckles don't matter, get both. You will probably end up selling your C&E, keeping your Essential and keeping your LE '08 when you want to take that long, relaxing shave in the country. :wink:
As for a comparative analysis, I have not used either B&B brush but I did utilize my own advice (something I don't do very often :rolleyes:) and ordered both.

07-18-2008, 05:22 PM
Now that's a nice brush!!! On the other hand, I love my LE2006, which has lost only 3 hairs since I got it. That makes it really tough to justify buying another brush - besides, my wife will kill me if I get yet another one.
I'll wait until the LE2010 comes out, and see how my LE2006 is holding up. I'm guessing that I may lose another 3 hairs by then, and won't need the LE2010 either. At this rate, I probably won't need another brush until the limited edition 2250 brush comes out.

If you want either/or I'd recommend the Limited since:
A) it is designed to be the BEST, not the best under $100 (no offense Essential :blushing:)
B) It's available now and you'll get it in a month or two, the essential is still, for the most part, like the Loch Ness Monster....you could wait quite a while before you see one! (again, no offense Mr Essential).

Answer Received from Joel to the following question.
I have responded to the question numerous times. All you need to do is purchase the gift certificate.
Thank Joel.
Joel,
First let me say thank you for all of your hard work in the development of this wonderful brush. I just place an order, but am concerned that I did not correctly complete the process.
Like the others that have asked if they had correctly completed the ordering process, I received a confirmation from PayPal that I had paid B&B $150. I then received an email from B&B with an Invoice that indicated I had purchased a Gift Certificate. I received a second email from B&B that stated:
In order to redeem this gift certificate please follow these steps:
1) Go to our site
2) Add to cart any products.
3) Follow to 'CHECKOUT' section.
4) Enter your personal details.
5) Select 'Gift Certificate' as payment method.
6) Enter your Gift Certificate ID and click the 'Submit' button.

Have we all successfully ordered the B&B Limited Edition 2008? OR must we somehow redeem the certificate?

Well, I guess that helps. So, as long as we get confirmation that we purchased a gift certificate, then we should be fine, yeah?

I had the exact same question about the order (very confusing about redeeming the gift certificate but no products exist to buy, etc.) so I guess we are fine. We shall see...

I still have the fence up my butt over this one. I would have been all over it had I not just gotten the Essential, because I wonder how much better or different can it be? Hmmmm. I also want to place a big order for a bunch of EOs and I don't know if my pocketbook can handle both.... Can still order the EOs after another pay day, though....
So this thing is good with soaps, too? Heck, now that I'm getting into the good brushes, I might have to get into the higher end creams and soaps, too.
I could also do the unthinkable and part with some of my den via the BST to make things more affordable to me. But I love my shave den. :frown: And it deserves another brush! :w00t:

No way! I am in the designing stages of making a box for them. It will take me a while to get it right in my head to start the build but when I do I will post pics. I just do not like anything I have see so far in the "wild" as it were.

What sort of stand will we need for the 2008LE? It'd be great if I could use the current one I have (works fine for both my $10 Tweezerman and my AOS sampler brush, but not for my VDH Deluxe boar). I'd definately want to have an appropriate stand on hand when it arrives, so I can use it immediately. Any reccomendations would be appreciated.

Ahh...the belief of an absolute need for a stand.
I used to have this belief as well and now I use no stands.
In my experience and I hope others will support this, a well made brush with high quality hair needs no stand. After cleaning with water, I simply briskly shake the brush until it forms its intended shape and let it dry standing on its very own base. Capillary action should result in the brush drying just fine and the brush will last and last and last just the same.
I agree the AOS people expound about the utter need for a brush stand and others may as well, but I think it not to be true.

Received today in the Great White North. (First one in Canada?)
First impressions: Very pretty. A little smaller than expected from the pics. Stiffer bristles than expected ("Yay" says Soap Paul). Very modern look. Lost 3 hairs just playing with it dry. It's dense enough that this loss isn't likely to matter once things reach a steady state. If these go into serious production as originally intended, the C&E won't stand a chance for the price.
Well protected in the USPS mailer box, John. Thanks!
Tomorrow evening begins a 3-day long weekend here. Three long shaves with a new brush, and cologne samples from Handy. Nice.

Pushed my luck and waited until August to order this puppy... errr Badger.
I haven't spent this much money on a hobby for myself (all at once) since my bike two years ago. It looks good and I truly trust the expertise of the fine gentlemen on this board and especially those behind the creation of this brush purchasing opportunity. It should be a VERY fine upgrade from my basic, floppy little Vulfix (not that there's anything wrong with her... she's perfect really, not a problem at all. In fact what am I doing?! ... I'm so sorry baby, come on, let's go make some lather :blush:).
Thank you all for your dedication. I eagerly await my LE2008.

I'm am close to ordering but have one issue. I've drifted over to soaps. Specificly Mama Bears. Generally from what I've read a good soap brush is fan shaped. While a good cream brush is bulb shaped. Can anyone offer me any insights on how well this will perform with soaps?

The ordering period was going to be "about a month". There have been no official announcements that ordering is closed so that's good for you and everyone else that is interested in getting a brush. Go for it!
Personally, I am selfishly sad that the ordering period is not over yet since I've already ordered my brush and I want those guys to shut it down and get the brushes in production. But then I come around and see the greater good that ordering is still open for the new arrivals. This will be one special brush. :drool:

Is there going to be any type of heads up that will give 24/48/72 hours notice that the ordering period will end? Some of us out here are:
a) Still on the fence because we have OCD and "just aren't sure."
b) Broke and trying to come with funds.
c) Both of the above.
Well, I knew I'd be ready to upgrade soon. This helped me tremendously by offering such a good product at such a good price, I had to jump in.
Thanks a lot Gents. for doing this.
Much appreciated, Greg

Bulb or Fan shape? Or am I over thinking it?
As others have pointed out it's only shaving, not a cure for cancer.
So I'm in.
I guess I can use it as an excuse to explore English Shaving Creams.

I've been too busy buying straight razors lately, and only yesterday started researching possible brush upgrades.
This brush is just what I was looking for. Dense, compact, small knot...
Will there be any extras ordered? Can I be put on a waiting list as per the B&B LeGrelot?
