View Full Version : So I just picked up my first bottle of Aqua Velva Blue

It was on sale at the grocery store, and after seeing most people here sing its praises I decided to pick up a bottle.

Haven't used it yet, but I have to say, what is wrong with you people? This stuffs "got old man stink." It's not bad, but it reminds me of old people.

I'll hold off final judgment until I use it once or twice, but I'm not impressed with the scent. Shoulda cracked the top before I decided to buy it.

Has it occurred to you that many of us may be "old men", thus explaining our love of the "blue"? Personally, as a card carrying AARP member I simply enjoy the burn without that "young whipper-snapper stench".

BUT, I picked up a bottle of AV a couple of months ago and my first impression of the scent out of the bottle ... old man. My first impressions of the scent after application ... manly. This product pummels the young whiper-snapper razor burn with its old man cane. I don't care what anybody says ... AV is awesome and smells awesome to boot.

I can see how people say Brut smells "old man," but AV? AV has that Axe, Edge, Old Spice body wash type scent. I'd think it was marketed to high school kids. Nothing old man about it, to me. I love it. (I love Brut, too.) I'm 22, so it's not like I've been using this for the past 40 years.

I don't think AV smells like old man; Old School Cool maybe. I bought some Brut and yes I never used it because it was too "old man" for me. But I like the AV and it fades pretty quickly on me which is what I want most days.

This is trippy!

I picked up my first bottle of AV Ice Blue tonight at the store (like 15 minutes ago) on sale! Joel's front page article got me interested in giving it a shot. A break from Trumper's limes a/s wouldn't be a bad thing. Hopefully! Will find out tomorrow a.m.

Along with some Nivea A/S balm on sale. Not sure about that. But the "absorbs instantly" claim was appealing. Plus it was on sale too.

+1 Thought it smelled bad when sniffing the bottle but i had to try it based on all of the hype. After some proraso cream in the shave and the cold water rinse, oh sweet lord the cooling is fantastic.

I got some for Father's Day, mainly as a result of the high regard it has here. I always thought of it as an "old man" type of thing, but that was before I got into wet shaving or really smelled it. Now I love this stuff! It has a great smell and it feels great on the skin. In fact I don't even notice a burn when I put it on, maybe I am used to the Pinaud's Bay Rum Burn, but the AV is kinda smooth for me!

Scents are very much a YMMV type of thing.

I'm not a huge fan of the AV Classic, but I do think its pretty good stuff and put the scent in the classic as opposed to old man category.

Fortunately, we Canadians can get AV Original Sport (green liquid) that I prefer in terms of scent, but that still has the same menthol kick.

The AV Classic fades pretty quickly, so the scent shouldn't be a huge issue - its certainly not offensive in any way.

I'm 22 also. What is the single scent that I ALWAYS get compliments on from the other sex? Not the $70 bottle of T&H Freshman (they do love that though) or any other expensive cologne. Its regular old Aqua Velva. Chicks dig an Aqua Velva Man!

Well, I have to mention, this was my first alcohol aftershave. The other three I use are balms or just straight jojoba oil.

I did give a little, "Woooooooo" when I first put it on. I have to say the menthol kicks in pretty quick. It seems to perform pretty well. I'm not crazy about the scent, but it's not awful. I don't think it'll be a go to AS for me, but I'll probably use it every once in a while. If my brother likes it though, I'll probably just give it to him.

I bought my first AV blue about 10 days ago and I LOVE IT!! Wasn't too thrilled when I opened the cap at Wal Mart and smelled it, but after the first splash I fell in love with it! For the real test, I splashed it on last saturday after my shave and went over to my fiance and she she loved it! "very manly" were her words... So as usual, it depends what you like .. I personally love it. For the price and the sensation it gives.. you can't beat AV.

I was also interested by Joel's post, so I took a whiff out of the bottle at Wal Mart the other day and immediately put it back. Now there are several of you claiming that it smells bad out of the bottle, but good on your face, so I'm tempted again.

I didn't think the bottle of musk smelled bad though... any fans of that here? How does it compare?

I'm also interested by Pinaud Clubman, but I don't really need to get too many After Shaves since I already have Brut, Old Spice, and OS Fresh Scent, as well as 6 different balms (not including samples). My shelf is getting too full!

one AV musk fan...here!

Have AV blue as well but am not a huge fan. It sounds like, for many, there may be a generational (read "age") component to what smells we like. Here's an idea (aka hypothesis): we have a memory of what older generations (grandparents/parents) smell like, it gets associated with "old", and we dont like it.

For the record Mom told me it did indeed smell like Old Man and to get away from her cause she couldn't stand the smell.

I think it may be a generational thing, as I seem to remember my Grandpa smelling like AV. He passed away about 13 years ago, but I still recognize that scent.

And I don't necessarily need "young man" smell, just not old. "Man" smell is acceptable.

No, not a lot. I leaned in specifically and told her to smell it. Personally, I really don't care to smell like anything. Don't use cologne. Don't mind a scented product if it fades fast. I like Proraso ASB because it works very well, and has an extremely mild scent that fades almost as soon as you put it on.

I do like the scent of the Nivea Extra Sensitive Balm but find that it seems to do nothing in terms of soothing.

I have a love affair with the Musk, fellow Pink Floyd fan.

One of my most well-liked and most complimented scents. It lasts quite a while on my person (and my skin tends to repel some scents and not last long). It does, however, burn like the fires of hell and if too much is used the scent is overbearing. I recommend decanting it into an atomizer and spritzing on your face for the aftershave. Remember to close your eyes .

I recently picked up a bottle of the AV Ice Sport to round out my Aqua Velva Trio consisting of Classic Ice Blue, Pure Sport (green variety indigenous to Canada), and Ice Sport (turquoise plastic bottle). The scent is non-offensive and aquatic and while it does contain menthol and provide a cooling sensation, it is milder than the Classic Ice Blue and not as bracing. Having all three now (excluding the Musk, which I think is a different animal completely), I would put the Ice Sport right in the middle of the Classic Ice Blue and (green) Pure Sport in terms of strength in the cooling/bracing category. Scent-wise, they're all unique and a pleasure to have in the rotation.

...and tried it on today. Not too sure there will be a second bottle in my future, but there is something iconic about it - a shared male experience across the generations.

As for the experience - once you get past the Windex-like looks, and the scent which, well, your YMMV and for my money is thanfully shortlived, this is not a bad summertime splash. Very cooling and refreshing.

Not sure I'd want this in cooler weather, but I may be reaching for it again when the mercury tips 90+.

I tried AV for the first time tonight. I don't understand you guys. This stuff is awful. It's easily the SINGLE WORST smelling aftershave/cologne I have ever sniffed. I thought that maybe it was just because I was smelling it directly from the bottle, so I tried it anyway. No, it's even worse when you wear it. It was suffocating me, so I had to go wash my face to get rid of the smell. Even then, I couldn't get the smell out of my nose. Really gross.

i think that the skin bracer definately has a more cooling effect/feeling. but i've found that both do a decent job of giving you that nice "ahh" effect. as opposed to the "fire" effect of say old spice.

i like using the AV splash waiting a while then showering and using the AV ice balm afterwards.

+1, I agree SB has more cooling, I like it, but my wife thinks it reeks. I shave than shower most days so I like to splash it on, go into the patio and feel the cool even if it is 85+ at 6:30, than go in and shower. Cheeks are

I'm 49. When I was young, Old Spice was what dads wore . . . Aqua Velva was what Grandpas wore . . . Pinaud Clubman was completely off the radar and would have been put in the same category as Old West era "lilac water" . . . we were "kewl" and wore Brut and British Sterling and Hai Karate . . .

Now Clubman's my favorite aftershave, with AV a close second. And I haven't seen Hai Karate (or British Sterling, for that matter) around for a couple decades now.

Sometimes the classics are that way for a reason. :thumbup1:

When I was a kid I had a plastic bottle of English Leather.. I think my wife would kick me out of the house if I brought some of that home..

This is cracking me up.

:thumbup1:

I wore British Sterling aftershave moisturizing balm and cologne earlier this week. And I wore English Leather cologne yesterday.. like the Brut, Old Spice, Aqua Velva, and Clubman too.. One of these days I'm gonna check out something really old and get some R&G Farina and/or 4711 cologne.

32 btw...

Hai Karate, now that's something I haven't thought about in a loooong time!

I can wear Skin Bracer just about anywhere or anytime I choose.

So long as I'm outdoors.

I am no "old man" ... I have yet to become that wise

Agreed, the stuff is great and I personally can't live without it. The scent after application is entirely different than the "in the bottle" smell.
