I was in a rush this morning, so I tried shaving with a cartridge for the first time in over a month. Suprizingly got a prety good shave. I guess the brush, prep, and cream do make a difference. Not as good as a DE, but probably the best I have ever gotten using a cartridge.

Jeff, what are the ingredients of the Arko sensitive creams?
crackstar
08-21-2006, 10:57 AM
Joe, it contains water, stearic acid, glycerin, potassium hydroxide, coconut acid, sodium hydroxide, propylene glycol, sodium silicate, fragrance, cetearyl alcohol, sodium borate, menthyl lactate, sodium PCA, allantoin, tocopheryl acetate, potassium chloride and methylparaben. In other words, it's got just about everything in it, but the kitchen sink! I think the menthyl lactate is what gives the cooling effect.

Thanks Jeff, I like seeing that glycerin way up at the beginning of the list, and I guess the allantoin gives it the properites that make it good for sensitive skin.

First shave wth a GEM - much trickier and awkward than the 1940's injector. I found it hard to maintain the head angle and if you don't, the razor can be quite aggressive - I'm going to persevere and try some of the other GEMs and Ever-Ready razors, as I hear they're very good - once you get the hang of maintaining the angle.

My 1st ever shave with a Gillette SS. Extremely close shave and very comfortable. A little light compared to the Merkur razors but very nice.
I like the Woodstock balm but I'll need to try it a few more times to make sure. I used the SF just to be safe as I was going to be outdoors all day.
I may be putting the Creed on the selling block as I am not too fond of ths one.
Overall, a great shave that lasted throughout the day at Latrobe for Steeler's training camp. Got to chase my daughters around and even picked up a couple of autographs.....Hines Ward!!

Today's shave was very enjoyable. I never used Proraso before (only Body Shop and Mr Taylors) but the refreshing feeling of the lather on my face gave a very nice feeling during the shave! I haven't noticed anything from a smell perspective (responding to the people who asked me after that). In fact, the scent in general is very neutral and not strong at all. When I did a hot water rinse and afterwards the cold water rinse to close the pores, whoa! that was a real COLD rinse. :001_smile.
Anyway, today was a very enjoyable shave and I already find myself picking Proraso red for tomorrow's shave. It lathers great with a few extra drops of water and it feels great as well!

The build quality is definately not as good as a Merkur or a Gillette SS....but this particular model does shave well.

Went with a Sandalwood theme today:
GEM open-comb micromatic with Pella blade
Vufix 2197 pure badger
QED Sandalwood stick
Alum
Thayer's a/s
Will G's Sandalwood a/s balm
Arden Sandalwood EDT
For those who've never heard of or tried the Arden Sandalwood, I'm really enjoying this scent (bought it from a member). It starts with a blast of lavender and sage and then dries down to a complex, warm, slightly sweet, powdery woody scent. I've worn this for three days straight - I like it that much.
Its a rich scent that reminds me in some ways of Knize Ten - but a less sweet/drier sandalwood version.

Gillette 1940's Super Speed w/ Euro Gillette blade
Bic Metal
T&H pre-shave oil
Tabac soap
QED DaVinci H2O
Floris 89 aftershave
Tabac edt (sample)
My first shave with Tabac soap. I had used the cream in the past and did not like the scent. Wanted to try the soap to see if it was any different.
I was able to get an okay lather but it was on the thin side. Still not crazy about the scent but not as intense as the cream. The cologne seems okay and actually smells
kind of nice but it doesn't seem to have much power to it.
I love the Floris 89 scent. I smell pineapple when 1st applied but then it dries down very nicey and last a decent time for an a/s. NEED to find the cologne.
Have a great day.

Great combo today:
QED Pine and Cedarwood soap
Kanwa a/s gel (fast fading scent)
Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet
Extra Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet (since it fades after about four hours)
If you are a fan of pinewood forests.... a great combination.

So, how is the new ST. Charles cream?
Cheers, DJ.
I have no reservations recommending this shave cream. It is very lubricating and the scent is wonderful. Very earthy and matches the EDT. It takes a little more work lathering but it's not a problem. I got a very close shave. I will include it in my shave cream rotation. I have also ordered the Lime shave cream.

Thayer's Lavender WH
Proraso pre/post
This was not a normal shave. It's only my second time using the 1920 Gillette, and it's my first time using an Israeli blade. The Gillette is a pretty good shave, but I'm reserving final judgement for now. The Israeli, however, I'm impressed with. I had a pretty bad time with lubrication, as you'll soon see, but I didn't get a single nick or patch of irritation. It wasn't BBS, but it was pretty close. "The best shave yet," my wife said this morning!
I started with the St. James cream and a nicely heated bowl / brush. I guess I'm still learning proper lathering technique, because while it looked voluminous, it faded pretty quickly after a pass and a half. I had to wash it off for the second pass, and was a bit frustrated with the cream, so I grabbed some standby Proraso soap and went to it. It turns out my tub of Proraso is a bit too old and a bit too empty to give a good lather, so I had to switch again on the third pass - this time, to my good old standby, QED Tangerine & Spearmint. This pass, with some touchup afterwards, was much more comfortable.
For a finish, some Thayer's Lavender and Proraso pre/post proved refreshing as always. Overall lessons learned: proper lather takes time to learn, Israeli blades are sharp enough and very smooth, and old stand-bys are great things to have.

Tried a straight for the first time today (Sheffield steel Pipe Razor from Ed/Forestryprof). I surprisingly didn't cut myself, but then again, I didn't cut any hair either! I guess I was too nervous, and used too conservative/great an angle. I was just afraid it would sink into my skin if I tried a more narrow angle on it. Also, the fact that the C&E Sandalwood cream is dry and crappy could have something to do with it also. I got frustrated and just finished up with my Injector. I'll have to research more on straights for next time :)
That's Will G Sandalwood A/S balm in the pict, the label just got faded.
