Good morning gents,
I recently acquired a jar of Proraso pre (& post)-shave cream. I haven't used it yet, but I'm planning to test its pre-shave beard softening capabilities soon.
As my pre-shave routine I use Kyle's prep (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=9745). Now I was wondering how to fit the Prorase pre-shave into that regimen. Would you apply it before or after the hot towels? I'm inclined to say before the hot towels, to give it more time to soften the beard.
What do you think?
Greetings,
Jan Pieter

I suggest using it instead of the lather that Kyle has as step one.

Thanks Jeremy & John, this sounds like a good suggestion. I'll try it tomorrow morning.

It was from reading Kyle's post that I started to consistently get good shaves.
I have since made enough changes to what I do (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=46844) that it doesn't really look at all similar to his method anymore. I found that I was too clumsy with hot towels, and a shower with hot water and the Hydroloast cube soap really accomplished the equivalen for me.
If you have a Hydrolast cube or other olive oil soap on hand, you might try applying it with the hot towel and see how your face responds. If I were better organized with my towels, I'd probably be doing that.

OK, I just finished my shave with the Proraso pre/post used instead of the first lather application in Kyle's prep. A very pleasant experience! I really like that 'super-cooling' effect. It's like the effect of the Proraso shaving soap, but "turned up to eleven".
As for the effect on the shave, I suspect that it does not matter that much if you use lather from shaving soap, Proraso pre/post or olive oil soap (thanks for the tip, Roger) underneath the towel. I'll stick to the Proraso for now because I like the cooling and it fits well into my routine.
Coincidentally, this was my first DE shave which approached BBS -- I could go ATG in several places without discomfort, something which I could not manage before. But that probably had a lot to do with the blade I was using: my first Swedish Gillette on its second day. :001_smile
