I have this beautiful 5.5" X 2.5" Blue/Green Escher hone NOS for sale. This is a vintage hone recently cut in it's original box. what actually makes this an escher hone?

Thüringen razor hones were quarried in the Sonneberg region of Thüringen before the 2nd World War. They were exported to many countries outside Germany by amongst others Escher and Co. and became famous as “Eschers”.
This one has the same smoothness as the famous blue/green Escher. It has no inclusions.
Thüringen hones are of sedimentary origin like coticules and contain small pieces of quartz. Rubbing the slurry stone on the slightly moistened hone releases the small quartz particles into an abrasive slurry and helps to keep the hone flat. As these are natural stones their size will vary slightly.
So you see, the name on the stone can be Escher, Droescher, Fox, The Celebrated, Hohenzolleren etc., but they're all the same stone. Since Escher is the most known, I use it so that those with less exposure to these stones can have a point of recognition. All the mentioned hones and others are in fact Thüringen hones.
