Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500

I need a new digital cam. I'd like a high end P&S, one with image stabilization, a decent zoom range, good video & accurate color fidelity. Oh, and it shouldn't weigh a ton.

Based on my (admittedly short) research, I've come up w/this Panasonic model (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Panasonic/panasonic_dmcfx500.asp). Any of you guys have any opinions about it? I've looked at various owner's opinions (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=panasonic_dmcfx500) on dpreview.com & they seem to be pretty positive (altho only 3 opinions are posted).

Obviously I plan on physically checking the camera out before I plunk down any cash. But I'm also interested in any opinions or other suggestions you guys might have.

I just purchased the much less expensive Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ8. It has everything I want in a digital P&S: 8.1 MP, a decent optical zoom, OIS, AP & SP manual modes.

So far, I'm quite happy with the unit--nice resolution, good ergonomics, enough manual control to keep me happy. The lens is plenty sharp for a P&S, the various shooting modes seem well executed, and the color is very nice--maybe a tad on the saturated side, which is fine with me.

If I wanted any more than this, I'd use a digital SLR, or a "real" (film) camera--you can still pick up some very nice deals in Contax film P&S cameras, with a terrific lens.

The best P&S on the market right now, IMO, is the Canon a650is. It has 12.1mp, image stabilization, face recognition/auto-focussing, 6x zoom, a variety of pre-set profiles and manual controls, takes AA batteries, and most importantly (for me) a tilt and swivel LCD. The movable LCD makes taking shots from some crazy angles very doable. I believe it's currently about $295 from Amazon.

I read a ton of reviews before finally settling on this camera, and across the board Canon gets rave reviews for image quality. This particular camera is supposedly nearly identical to the more expensive G9, but lighter in weight, and no option for external accessories (e.g., flash).

If you do not need the tilt/swivel LCD, the Canon SX100IS is $220 (10x zoom), and the Canon a720IS is $199 (6x zoom).

In the Panasonic line, I'd opt for the TZ5. It sports an amazing zoom and all sorts of wacky, cutting edge features. I'm a white balance nut, and this one offers great control.
