Gentlemen

I have decided to use part of my stimulus package to purchase a few hones. I am leaning towards buying a few shaptons. I would like to purchase the 4000 grit stone, as well as the 8000 grit stone. As far as finishing the razor I am going to finish with a pasted paddle all the way down to .25 micron.

Since I am new to this I wanted to know if this would be a good way to go.

Thank you for your thoughts

Matthew - that should work fine for new razor or ones that have already been sharpened. However, if your going to pick up old ones or do some restoration your going to need one at a grit lower than 4000 like a Norton 1K or DMT 1200.

+1 for the DMT, I have one and it's awesome.

That sounds good, you will also need something to lap the stones with if you are going to be using them a lot. The DMT-8C or DMT-8XXC would be good for this. I am sure that you already know that you will need a bare leather strop for everyday use as well.
