About a week ago this POST (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=4185) was started about body soaps so I ordered three different brands... The Zum, Claus Porto, and Blue Ridge Soap Shop.
They've all arrived and were what I expected... very nice.
Except for the Claus Porto... these things are AWESOME!
They are almost the size of footballs, smell wonderful, and are in beautiful packages... I felt bad putting them in the closet. I thought $14/bar seemed pricey but after seeing these wonderful bars, it's no doubt they are worth it!
See them HERE (http://www.lafcony.com/products/clausporto/index.php?frame=BARSOAP).
PS: I wanna emphasize just how big these are... I can't close my hand around the bar!!!

I'm a Claus Porto user myself, really fantastic stuff. Definitely pick up the "Lelite" Orange Amber and the "Aguia" Vetiver.

Aaron,
Just when I'm trying to use restraint [yeah, right  ] in buying soaps, creams and such, you just had to 'share' your find of the Claus Porto soaps! Your description and their website together forced me to add Claus Porto bath soaps to my wish list. It indeed looks like great stuff. Looks like you can get it in a single 12.34 ounce bar or a three pack of 5.28 ounce bars. I can hardly imagine trying to hold a 3/4 pound bar of soap in the shower, much less dropping that puppy! Ouch!!! Anyway you slice 'em that's some big bars of soap my man. A Manly Man's Soap! Now, Aaron, don't tease us with saying they smell great and just leave us hanging. You've got to tell us what scents you got and give us your take on each one.
Also, I'm curious about the Blue Ridge Soap Shed soaps you got...again the scents and your take on each one. I still have a little bit of some of the Blue Ridge body soaps left. My favorite is by far the 'Dirty Old Man' followed by 'Gentleman Caller' and then 'Masculine Musk.' I wish their bars were a bit larger but the soap performs well and the 'manly' scents are all winners in my book.

I did get the vetiver as well as
'Deco' Lime Basil - through the wrapping this thing smells awesome
'Parada' Pear Sandalwood
'Tabaco' umm well you can probably guess this one
Can't wait to try these guys out! I'm gonna need some kind of soap rack in the shower to start holding all of my bath soaps... I'm starting to collect those just like shave soaps!:blushing:
Edit: Ron I was typing this at the same time you were asking. I got about a dozen Blue Ridge Soaps so it'll be a while before I can comment on them... I did get the Manly 6 pack thing.

Shane,

Ron,
They also have 15 packs of 'Guest Soap' (http://www.lafcony.com/products/clausporto/index.php?frame=GUESTSOAP) in a lot of thier scents.
That looks like a neat way to go... then when you post in the buy, sell, trade you can always throw one in to sweeten your deals!

Shane,

I have the tobacco scent, but it's hard to tell how it smells through the package... I guessing it is one of those that is mild and you don't really smell until you use it.
From what I could tell about it had a sweet, earthy smell to it.

Unfortunately I haven't tried the Tabaco yet, from what I read about it it's a strong one-noter of sweet, smoky tobacco leaves. Thus far I have the "Lelite" Orange Amber, "Aguia" Vetiver, "Banho" Citron Verbena and the "Rivale" Grapefruit Fig, all of them fantastic.

These soaps sound great--I'm down to 1 good bar right now and was all set to order my usual NB sig scent--now I'm waffling!

So I just unwrapped my bar of vetyver and had to laugh... remember I said they were big? Well the bars have finger grips on one side to help you hold them!! These things are monsters... I bet one bar will last three months of 2x daily showers easily!
I'm telling you, I'm gonna need a soap rack in my shower!!!

As my one month follow-up, let me tell you this is my favorite soap of the three brands that I ordered (Zum, Blue Mtn, and Claus Porto).
And this stuff lasts forever! This vetyver is very nice but it just won't go away. I shower 12 to 14 times a week and have a couple of soap bars. This bar of vetyver is still bigger than ANY soap bar that you will find in the aisle at the store! :thumbup1:
It's actually kinda frustrating since I really want to try one of the other three that I have! At this rate, it'll be next September and I won't have made it through all of them yet!

Deco is my favorite! It is perfect in the morning or whenever you need a pick me up. These soaps do not lose their fragrance. I've had one bar that I have been using off and on since April and it still smells exactly as it did when first opened. You can also get these scents in bath gel, body lotion, and bath salts.

Ok, now that I've put a little effort into figuring out pics:
http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=3771
I tired to put a few things in the pic to give you a scale reference... a five pack of Derbys and a bar of NB soap.
I also have a Zum bar and a Blue Ridge bar. Notice just how big the Claus Porto bars are!
Also, the packaging is just beautiful!:thumbup1:

The Claus Porto soaps are among the best in the world. I have been using their Musgo Real body bar for years now. Nothing compares IMHO. Excellent scent too, just like the Musgo Real Cologne.

I just ordered a couple of the Claus Porto soaps from beauty.com, taking advantage of their free shipping offer. I tried to get them at Neiman's, but all they had were the candles...

Well, it's been five months since I opened the first Claus Porto soap bar and it is almost gone (finally).
Now, I haven't been using it exclusively, but it gets used as much as any other soap bar and it's easily outlasted at least six other bars during it's time.
Now the hard part... which bar do I try next?
Pear Sandalwood
Lime Basil
Tobacco
And then I'll have to get some more... maybe the smaller size next time so I can use them quicker!

The Tobacco seems to be a good cold weather scent, although it is probably the most subtle scent of all the bars I received. I'm not sure if I would purchase this one again, but since you already have it...
I'm looking forward to Lime Basil for Spring, and the Citron Verbena for Summer.

(I just won't let this thread die will I!?)
Well, I finally finished up the Vetyver and decided to try the 'Parada' (Pear Sandalwood).
It has a wonderful sweet sandalwood scent. It probably lasts on me for about four hours or so - certainly not strong at all, but very light... nothing that would interfere with cologne or anything like that. It also leaves the bathroom smelling very nice (again not strong).
This is quality soap and I would gladly recommend it (any of the flavors) to anyone.

I've seen a few Claus Porto bars offered at beauty.com and then the whole line at the Lafco web site. Lafco offers the 12.34 ounce bar as well as a 3-pack of the 5.28 ounce bars.
My question is: Does anyone know of an online seller who might possibly offer a 'sampler' pack of the smaller bars? I just hate to buy lots of soap scents, several of which I might not even like.

I believe Beauty.com offers the whole line as well, with the bonus of free shipping promotions. See my post earlier in this thread for the whole-line link (#19). That was a little tricky to navigate into.
These soaps definitely last a l-o-n-g time and smell great. If I were to recommend one and only one scent, it would have to be the Lime Basil (although it would probably be best enjoyed in the Spring/Summer).
Although not necessarily 'sampler' packs, they do sell variety packs of guest soaps containing 3 each of 5 different scents -- 15 soaps for less than $20.

Here's (http://www.thesoapopera.com/scgi-bin/scart.cgi/LAF-L-799-795-3.php3?scartid=2215414) a site with a 3-bar sampler if your interested.
I have the amber-orange and the grapefruit fig. SOmeone tell me about the verbena, the red poppy, sandalwood-pear, lavendar and vetyver. I want some that smell good.
Also, is Luxo Banho just as good or inferior.
I debating whether to get some more Claus or a Bronnley soap. I love the Floris line but gosh, $32 for 3 3.5 ounce bars is expensive. $22 for 3 5.3 is better, but the $14 12 ounce bar is a steal

I love the Sandalwood Pear. The vetyver ok, but not as strong as the SP.
I have not tried the others yet.
I have heard very good things about the Verbena.

How do these soaps perform? I've bought some big triple mill bars from TJ Maxx and such, but they are quite drying in the winter. They do leave you squeeky clean though. Are the Musgo Real bars the same as Claus Porto with a different scent, ie formulated the same?

I have the Musgo Real and they are different from these Claus Porto bars. The Musgo Real was much more drying and did not last as long (smelled good though!).
Typically in the winter I have to use body lotion to keep from itching... using the Claus Porto bars resulted in using no lotion this winter... very good quality soaps.
I have heard the same on the Musgo bars. Not all that great as the Claus Portos, although Claus makes both.

For what it's worth, Caswell Massey carries about 6 of the Claus Porto scents and they're starting their "private sale" now through April 12 - 20% off the entire order, no minimum purchase. You can re-use the coupon code as many times as you want.
I figure I'm ok posting the code here, since the code is re-usable and there's even a "forward this to a friend" link in their e-mail. It's PSM07 - you enter it at checkout. In case ayone wants to try out these soaps.

The Lafco NY Claus Porto site is selling assortment packs under the Holiday label on their site. They have both bars and guest bars in various combinations and assortments if you want to try a variety of scents. I picked up a pack or 15 guest bars in 5 flavors to try these out as I am almost out of Issy's soap and have been waiting for it to come in.

Just received my regular newsletter from www.barclaycrocker.com (http://barclaycrocker.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=50&Store_Code=barclay). They have a special this week ( until 9th March /07), all Claus Porto Soaps are discounted with 15% Coupon - you just enter the coupon when you checkout. The coupon code is MOVE ( it seems Barclay Crocker are moving to a larger space but they send coupon offers regularly, on good stuff too )
They have all the scents in 12.3oz, 3x 5.3oz Packs and individual 5.3oz sizes
( the Musgo Real Soaps by the same manufacturer are not on sale - I checked !).
I saw they have the candles too . I got 5 scents in the 12.3oz size, Vetyver (Aquia),Pear Sandalwood (Parada),Lime Basil (Deco), Acacia Tuberose (Voga),Sweet Tobacco ( Tabaco) the scents are well described on the site and they have FREE shipping on orders over $99.00 and $5.95 on orders up to $99.00.Its a bit rough if you are only buying an $8.95 tube of Proraso but great when you buy a few items. Te best part is they ship by Priority Mail , which makes it to me in 2/3 business day or West Coast probably 4.

Ok, so I've finally got around to using the Claus Porto 'Deco' (Lime Basil).
I thought it would be a great summertime scent.
Well, while the soap is still marvelous, the scent is a little disappointing. I really don't smell any lime in it and honestly, it smells a lot like the vetiver but just not quite as strong. I was certainly hoping for a stronger lime note.

The red poppy is absolutely amazing. The scent pretty much permeates the whole bathroom until the soap is about half gone, which takes about a month. I picked up two Tobacco's at half price locally. Haven't had a chance to try them yet, though.

The Musgo Real body soap smells almost identical to the shave cream.
The Musgo Real line is treated differently from the Claus Porto line (even though it is the same designer... maybe kinda like Chaps and Polo).
Anyway, I think I got my bars from Classic Shaving. I do find the Musgo Real soap to be more drying than the Claus Porto bars... I don't think they have the shea butter or something.

I got the Aguia Vetyver, and to be honest, through the wrapper, it doesn't smell that great... But the other fragrances such as Voga Acacia Tuberose, Parada Pear Sandalwood, Lysia Mimosa, Lelite Orange Amber, Condesa Wild Pansy, and Banho Citron Verbena seem like they would be great. After I finish these three, bought the three pack of vetyver, I'll have to check those out. Yeah... really need to get a sample pack or something.

It's amazes me sometimes that true luxury can be had at such a minimal cost. TOBS SC, Porto Soaps, Mitchell Wool Fat products & others.
These products may seem expensive but a little bit goes along way which makes them very reasonable compared to cheaper stuff that you just burn through & have to resupply on with greater frequency.

Well first off, I believe the 3-pack is contains 5.28oz soap bars and not the huge 12.34 oz bars.
But honestly, even if you have the smaller bars I have no idea how you could go possibly through one in a week. The larger bars last me at 2 months... more like 3 months per bar.
Berticus
09-20-2007, 06:20 AM
I apply the soap directly on my body instead of using a washcloth or something to apply it. Plus I keep the water running. Could any of those contribute to how fast I use these soaps? Aren't each of those small bars 5.28 oz each? Or is the total 5.28 oz? I thought each bar was 5.28 oz... otherwise that one bar would be unimaginably HUGE!
Which I suppose is what everybody is saying... And the smaller soaps would be SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive.

I would think that those would have some impact, but also does your soap have the chance to dry between uses or is it constantly moist?
Berticus
09-20-2007, 09:18 AM
Oh... It's constantly moist... I'm living in a dorm right now and I keep it in a ziplock bag since it doesn't fit in my soap dish. Once I'm done with the soap, while in the shower, I try to get all the moisture out of the bag, and then I put the soap in.

I've been trying to find a large enough soap dish/box/container/whatever to hold it. Something with a cover is preferable and drain holes or something at the bottom to keep the water away, but everything I see is just a tad too small. Any suggestions as to what I should get? Right now I have it in a bowl.

I bought the big bar of Claus porto Banho Citron Verbena. My wife and I use it, and we shower twice daily. I use a washcloth, most of the time she doesn't. We've had the bar up there for 2 months and I believe that if I look at it in the right light, I can see that it's a bit smaller than when we started. But notwithstanding its longevity, it's truly a great soap. It lathers something fierce, feels great going on, and the shea butter really does nice things for your skin. I want to try some of their other flavors, but I'm concerned that I may retire or die of old age before the present bar wears out. Pick your favorite scent--the soap is fantastic and you won't be disappointed.
