View Full Version : Help in identifying a stone??

I'm wondering whether anyone can help me with this. I found this sharpening/honing stone among some old tools that used to belong to my father. It's marked "Pike Ezy Edge" and comes in a nice (though worn!) little wooden box. The surface feels very smooth, and although it has a few small gouges in it (I think it was probably used for sharpening chisels) I imagine I could lap it flat with a diamond plate. Size of the stone is 13.3 x 5 x 1.2 cm (5 3/8 x 2 x 7/16 inch!). Based on when my father died, it cannot be newer than early 1960s. It's obviously been used with oil in the past, as it has an oily residue on the surface.
Any ideas on what I've got here? Is it suitable for razor honing? (I've got a Norton 4000/8000 combination stone, but this feels finer to the touch).
Any advice gratefully received!

David

My guess is that if it was designed for chisels it no good for straights. It actually looks like a barbers hone but with those old hones its hard to tell. If you have an old junk razor you can experiment.

The link from asbjorn shows something that looks very like my hone - I'll have a play with it on an old razor I've got for practicing, and report my findings!

Cheers,

what i found interresting in that picture was the picture and text in the lid, so it looks that this is really an barberhone.

I think I recall seeing somewhere that the Pike company eventually became known as Norton.
