Postage was similar to Jeff's, SUPER cheap for transatlantic shipping. Heck, it's super cheap even for US shipping. I'm in FL, so hopefully I'm closer :biggrin1:
I agree, the shipping charges from Vintage Scent are very reasonable, on par or even less then some US based suppliers would charge. Makes buying Semogue brushes a breeze. I also find the "currency selector" (on his home page) to be quite helpful and equally so, makes doing business with an out of Country supplier so much easier. Can't wait for the next "LE" release from Semogue! :thumbup1:

Ordered a Semogue 2000 on 8/8/10, received yesterday, 8/21/10. Product arrived in great shape despite some rough handling by the USPS.
Great Product, great service.
Thanks Leon.

We'll see. Ordered mine July 28th, yet to see it. Will post when I receive it. Postage was similar to Jeff's, SUPER cheap for transatlantic shipping. Hell, it's super cheap even for US shipping. I'm in FL, so hopefully I'm closer :biggrin1:
Whoops, realized I never updated this.
Ordered on July 28th, received on August 12th, so just about two weeks from across the pond. All products were in great shape.

So Bruno,
When might we expect to see a new L.E. Boar from Semogue again? Have anything in the works? (I'm not talking about the brush the members here are working on as that one is a longshot and may not have much support from the B&B management.) I'm, talking Vintage Scent here, what's coming down the road and how soon? Can you share any details etc?
I'm ready for a new Boar or two!

Well, there's some prototypes being tested right now, but they'll only come out in a couple of months. There are some details we still have to get together.

Leon, I see you're out of Lavanda shave cream. Rumor on the street is that Lavanda is being discontinued. Any truth to this?
Leon, I see you're out of Lavanda shave cream. Rumor on the street is that Lavanda is being discontinued. Any truth to this?
That's not a rumor - that's a fact. It's production has stopped for good for quite a while now and they're not planning making it again.
Yep, discontinued. If you know someone in the New Jersey area, there was a post a few weeks back where someone found a few tubes of Lavanda at A&J Seabra's supermarket.
Check it out here:

Oh... Man I would love that! I'd forgotten about that stuff! It would be awesome to have it in a puck form, and especially the bowl with the cork! I'm on a soap hiatus, but I would budge for one of those!
Leon,

Sorry, no. These pucks are only sold in Spain and through the La Toja website.
I just saw that today too after doing random searches, massive puck in there it looks like.
Its 125 grams, I guess. The soap is exactly the same as the stick.

I wish, but this was a generous gift from a Spanish friend.

The Semogue 2010 Limited Edition brush sets a new milestone in the traditional handmade shaving brushes. This brush is densely stuffed with the very best Selected Silvertip Badger hair, a whiter and softer kind of Silvertip hair to provide the ultimate shaving experience using either soaps or creams. The manufacturing of the knot was successfully achieved after intense testing to make sure it provides the optimum balance between backbone and luxurious softness. The knot is 24mm in diameter and 52mm tall.
There's more about this brush which makes it the most exclusive of the Semogues brushes ever produced. Besides having a never used before Selected Silvertip Badger hair, we made a beautiful acrylic handle just for this model. We wanted to make the handle with a vintage aura, so we made a two-tone piece. The top half is an octagonal ivory piece and the bottom half is cylindrical clear transparent. The engraving in the base shows the limited edition information - the brush number, the Semogue logo and the year of production. The handle is "chubbier" than all other Semogue handles, providing a better grip when lathering. It is 47mm tall and 38mm diameter in its larger point.
This brush feels really luxurious in the face. It lathers easily any hard soap or cream. In terms of comparison to other production brushes, I'd say that it feels like a Simpson Chubby between the 1 and 2 model and the hair resembles a lot the Shavemac D01 silvertip hair.
The brushes are currently being made. There will be only 50 available. We plan to start shipping these by the first week of December, so be sure to grab yours before they run out.

The first is Semogue 82.
The second is Semogue 1140.
Both were low-end models for the mass market.
I've already posted a photo featuring an old Semogue 1140 that I've found at a drugstore. Here it is:

The third seems to be the most interesting, seems to be a very old version of the Semogue 1438 model.

I though it only fair to post this here.
If I get poor service or bad food in a restaurant, I tell them. Usually they put something right, and appreciate knowing when they're not doing things as well as they should. The alternative is to sit tight say nothing and never go back. I'm sure the restaurant appreciates the first option. Same with vendors here. I've had nothing but excellent service from any used, and particularly VS. Until my last 2 orders.
Both sat 'processing' for 5-7 days before being shipped, despite payment having been received and acknowledged within 24 hours. Given I wait 2-3 weeks for delivery afterwards, this means a month or more all up.
I've made the occasional product enquiry to Leon via email, and he's been very prompt to respond. Except the last 2 orders again. I asked why my (first) order was still processing a week later and got no reply.
With my current order, I forgot to add an item and emailed to ask if it could be added - seeing as the order was still 'processing'. I got no reply, and my order was then shipped 4 days later.

Currently very disappointed, and will probably try and source the item I forgot, from elsewhere.
I've always wondered why some orders I've placed elsewhere sit processing for a while. My only thought it that they are waiting for an item or two that was part of an order to come back into stock before shipping. Not saying its right, just a hunch.

Nope, they usually list something as OOS, when that's the case. So you can't actually order stuff that they don't have in.
I posted to see if others were having the same issues, and it appears they do.
Hi gents,
Sorry about some of you getting a subpar service, I always try to do the best.
In the beginning of this year, it happened about everything that could.
Some products I had in stock were damaged during a restock and while they were already meant to be shipped, I had to order some more. Then, the delivery of these products were also messed up by our local postal service. It took a week for those to get here.
And in top of that, I've had some technical difficulties with my email. I don't know why, but some mail servers from my customers claim that my mail server has a "MTA poor reputation", whatever that is. I have still to get this solved with my ISP.
So, I'm sorry if I wasn't able to serve all of you like I'd like to.

Leon;
I have had an order placed and payment completed for well over a week now, and still shows as 'processing', no information forthcoming on any issues that may be holding it up. It is order #2139, all items still show as in stock.
The more troubling side is that I have sent an email regarding it, but have received no reply yet. You have however posted to this thread in the meantime.
Are you still having email troubles? I have no spam filtering on the email address, so there should be no issue with mail getting through from you to me.
Joel, you just sent you a PM with details on your order.

Thankyou for your smart attention on this, however I get the distinct feeling that I was rushed through as I have made some noise here.
I know of two other orders in your system right now that both are eventually headed for Australia. Both have been marked as processing for a while. I hate to have my order processed and sent while I have two friends who have not.
If I may make a suggestion, you can get Google to host your mail domain and get 50 free email addresses (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/pt-PT/group/index.html) if your ISP's email is this unreliable. Your ISP should be able to help you set this up, I converted my workplace to this system and it works well. We were able to get an increase to 200 email boxes for free a number of years ago and the price is great!
Gentlemen,
I'm proud to announce the first Semogue brush stuffed with the very exclusive 2 band Finest badger hair. This rare hair comes from the North of China from the badger species "Meles Meles" also known as European Badger or Eurasian Badger. It provides great backbone and very soft white tips which makes this brush great for either soaps or creams.
After the great success of the 2010 Limited Edition brush, this Semogue 2 band sets another milestone that Semogue achieves in the exquisite badger brush market.
This fine brush is totally made by hand from start to finish. The handle is hand turned by a skilled woodsman and later is hand sanded one by one. Then, the knot is made by the master craftsman using the traditional methods passed by past generations to provide the best performing brush.
The knot has a 24 mm diameter and 53 mm height. The handle is 57 mm tall and has 37 mm in its widest point. The beautiful wooden handle is made of cherry wood and has the SOC engraving on the side and the vintage Semogue logo engraved on the base.
The Semogue Owners Club brushes are available exclusively here at Vintage Scent (http://vintagescent.com/shaving-brushes-c-5/semogue-owners-club-2-band-brush-p-110).

In order to solve the communication problems with some customer mails (the dreaded "MTA poor reputation" message), my ISP is going to migrate my account to a new server, hoping this will solve the problem.
So, my website and email might suffer some downtime during this day.

Hello Leon,
I'm interested in placing an order for some soap and a brush. One quick question. The site mentions that the shipping cost would be €7.50 "per unit." Does that mean shipping would cost €7.50 per each individual item I'm buying or the shipping cost is €7.50 for all the items total? Thank you.

Does "banded imitation badger" mean that the hair is some sort of synthetic hair made to look like badger? Or am I missing something? I suspect that given the price of real boar/badger brushes, there would be a low demand for synthetics. Please help me understand this. By the way, I am seriously contemplating one of your "owner's club cherry" brushes and wondering if the "imitation badger would be a good buy.

The banded imitation badger" are just boar hairs dyed to look like badger markings.
Unsolicited opinion: the quality of these are great (i have the 830 and 1460) and dealing with Leon is great...great vendor.

Leon, there's an anti-banding movement brewing. More and more people would prefer their boars looked look one, instead of trying to pretend they are badgers.
They don't need to, they can stand on their own merits. I realise banding is a historical thing, but doesn't explain why Semogue still produces some of their brushes banded and some pure blonde - even their premium brushes are often banded.

Any future plans for an express checkout with PayPal ?
I really don't understand the market strategy for having to become a member in order to purchase? Unless, it is to be on a (Politely ) mailing notification list.
I would have bought several items from you with an express checkout option. I refuse to join any membership in order to order....So, I just went to ebay and bought a vintage bottle of Spanish Floid instead of joining an exclusive club...far more simplistic to do a BIN there. I would guess your checkout system will deter buyers as myself. I mean, take Bullgoose as example. I buy an awful lot of stuff from them via their express checkout. No exclusive membership required.
PM me if you ever have a non-membership express checkout.

I really like Musgo Real but cannot use it as it gives me a slight burning sensation. Am I likely to get the same reaction with these two creams?

Probably. The burning you are getting is likely due to the lanolin content of Musgo, which Veleiro and Top Secret both have. Do you by chance get the same reaction with MWF?

I would disagree...
I´ve seen many complain about having a reaction to Musgo and many come to the conclusion that it should be from the fragrances used.
Never heard of a reaction on Veleiro or Top Secret untill now on the other hand, which gives some credit to that thinking.
Lanolin gets a lot of blame and some even go to the extent of saying it´s a known irritant, which is plain ridiculous....

Some people are allergic to lanolin which is why I asked about MWF as many people have reactions to that and it doesn't really contain any fragrances.
Might not hear of reactions to veleiro or top secret as they are vastly less used than MWF or Musgo.

Hi

Is the 610 a remake of the 2010 Custom Boar Brush?
Not quite. The bristles are not of the same grade. The Best 90% Tops is a great, underated bristles grade and perform great.

I can't be upset with Leon, because he didn't have to offer any discount in the first place. But I'm disappointed because I was on his site yesterday and would have ordered then instead of stopping to think about what I wanted before going back today.
A 20% discount easily overcomes my resistance to my ADs, but full prices kill temptation. No sale.

Yeah. Same with me. I decided to do a little research to see which one, or ones, I might want and next time I went back the prices were back to normal. Oh well. Next time I guess.

I'm on B&B twice a day and still managed to miss this. I guess that's one way to save some money. A 'want' can always be tempted by a sale and my Semogue AD always has a 'want' or two. But a 'need' will always give in, sale or no sale. Since I missed it (my fault), Leon looses. Maybe a new introductoin may tempt my 'needs'. Wait till next time.:001_rolle

I've seen a few post about it, but the page is in Portugese (which I do no read). It looks nice, and I'm a sucker for an LE brush...
what is it?

The Semogue Caravela is a brush for the two forums http://www.barbearclassico.com/ and http://www.foroafeitado.com. You didn't miss any announcement here as there wasn't one at least for here. The Semogue Caravela is a Limited Edition brush for the Portuguese and Spanish wet-shaving forums. The knot is a boar/badger mix: 50% Finest badger (the same type of hair used the SOC 2-band) and 50% Premium 90% tops boar bristles (like in the 1305 and 830 models).
And it comes with a nice engraving in the handle: :001_smile

Dear Customer,
The new Semogue Limited Edition 2011 shaving brushes are here.
This time, Semogue has provided an array of shaving brushes for both boar and badger lovers. This LE lets customers choose between boar or badger hair and the size of the knot.
The boar knot is made of Special Grade boar, only used once back in the LE 2009. It has the same hair, with one dyed band. It's labeled Finest Bristle and has proven to be the top bristle available everywhere since 2009 and now it's back.
The badger knot is made of Finest Badger hair, a two banded hair from European badger (Meles Meles). This special kind of hair has been chosen because of its soft tips and strong backbone to load and lather any kind of soap or cream.
The handle of these brushes is also something unique. It was specially designed for this special occasion. Its vintage shape has been based on the first Semogue brush handles, made over 50 years ago. Its ergonomically enhanced shape provided comfortable grip and control of the brush. The material is also new, it's never been used in any other handle. It's a very strong and tough, marble-like black acrylic fiber with some faint veins that give a classy and vintage look. As always, the base of the handle will have the Semogue LE signature - the brush number, the Semogue logo and the year of production 2011. On the bottom side of the handle, it will also be engraved the kind of knot it is - Finest Bristle or Finest Badger, and the size of it - size 1 or 2. Each of these 4 models will be numbered from 1 to 100.
With this new brushes, Semogue also presents you the new Semogue logo. The old Excelsior logo will now be deprecated.
These brushes are in the finishing stage and are ready to be shipped next week, but you can pre-order now.
Enjoy this unique opportunity to own one of this remarkable brushes. Don't miss it.

No, I've been able to sustain the prices for quite a while now, even though the hair (both boar and badger) have been increasing.
Your favorite Semogue is the LE from 2008 in horn? That's a relic! Keep it! I love mine too (and it's the #1) :001_tt2:

Dear Customer,
The Vintage Scent has a new website.
There are some new features:
- Non-European Union residents will have an automatic reduction of 23% of the regular price because of the exemption of VAT.
- New and improved navigation system
- New and clear design
I hope you'll find this website to your liking.
Best regards
Bruno
Bruno,
The new site loads much faster than the old one (the old one wasn't bad). I like how you can select different currencies at the upper right corner and the site seems to remember that selection, unlike the previous site that occasionally would loose that selected choice.
My one suggestion, which I realize may be beyond your control, would be to go back to the original color scheme of Vintage Scent. The dark green color scheme looked great and was unique marketing tool that set Vintage Scent apart.
I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Semogue 1250 which will make my fourth brush purchased from Vintage Scent. My Semogue 1305, 1800 and 1470 all are used regularly and provide great lathers. Despite the obvious shipping times from Portugal to the east coast of the U.S., Vintage Scent has always provided first-quality service - Thank You!

Yep, I also liked the old look better!
Thanks gents!
I'll keep that dark green remark in mind. I'll tweak the scheme of the site as soon as I have some time off.

I just checked out the new site. I think it's got some sort of a magical hold on the viewer. I felt hypnotized and bought a brush without giving it a second thought. Usually I ponder it briefly for a few mintues before caving. The new site has a "guilt free buying" feel to it. Well done!

I've been playing with the color schema and change the background to the green the old site had.

The Silvertip badger hair Semogue uses is unbelievably soft and luxurious. Make sure you try out one of their boar brushes too...I am more of a Silvertip guy but I was very, very impressed with the inexpensive 1250 boar. So much that I have a 2030B on the way.

That's very interesting to know, given all the discussions on this forum about badger vs boar brushes I assumed I'd never get a boar brush. Will see about adding one to this order.
By the way, can anyone enlighten me as to why some wet shavers get so many brushes? It appears reading various threads that some will use different brushes in a single week. It seems I'm inclined to just use the brush I like most all the time.

variety of handle shapes, soaps vs creams (some work better with hard soaps then others), multiple boars for dry times in between. mix it up, keep it fun and interesting.

+1 on Bruce.
Just to add some more variables: distinct badger and boar hair types; distinct diameter; distinct loft.
There are so many choices, you'll have to see what works best for you.
Sometimes people ask me how to prepare the brush before shaving. Here's my method. Fill a container with warm (not hot!) water and put a support below. This way the brush is perfectly upside down without risking to fall to the sides.
Don't use hot water for Christ's sake! I can't repeat this enough. Also, don't use too much water. The water level should be at most at 1 cm from the base of the knot. Don't go any nearer than that.

Why warm water?
i use hot tap water and go up to just under the metal ring. i have been doing it with my 1035 and LE2 without any issues.
sometimes it falls in while i'm showering, sometimes it stays up.
the 5-10min it may be submerged in water isn't going to harm it. if i leave it in there overnight, it may be a different story, but even then, i don't think a few minutes in water is going to damage the handle or knot.
Hello my friends.
I'm taking a break for a few days.
I won't have access to my emails, nor the forums.
I'll see you all on May 1st.

SOC just ordered, thanks Leon. Congratulations on starting year five, I wish you profitable fifth year (and some fun too).
I can't help but think about the impact that Vintage scent has had in the world of shaving spreading the word about wonderful Semogue brushes. Four years ago when I returned to wet shaving all of the conversation was about badger hair, with boar being relegated to the ash bin of history.
Although Omega brushes are fine, the quality of the Semogue handles and knots is simply superb, so than you and congratulations.

Congrats on the 4 year milestone, the website looks to be a great one.
I"ve purchased four brushes from Vintage Scent in three orders. If I recall correctly, from Portugal to the east coast of the U.S. it has been 1.5-2 weeks.
Of course anytime that you order internationally you are at the mercy of your national customs service meaning that if they decide to inspect the shipment lot that your order is in, it can add days to the process. I've ordered perhaps a dozen overseas shave products and personally never had a problem with a customs hangup, but I have occasionally read post about such.
My experiences with Vintage Scent have all been top notch, so I always order with confidence.

You can't even compare Semogue boars to something like VDH. Semogue are the gold standard of boars.

I hope so! I get some irritation after face slathering with my EJ "best" which looks and feels more like pure to me, but am fine with my C&E or Simpson "best" brushes. I'm hoping that after a few weeks of bowl lathering the 1305 will fit into my rotation.

1305 is a very nice brush. it was my 1st semogue and remains in my den. i've since added a SOC Cherry (under $30 shipped with the current deal) and a LE2 Bristle.
like insomniac said, they are top notch brushes. i don't own any omegas, so can't compare them.

I received my order of a Semogue 1305 last week. I was hesitant to order a boar brush as my only other experience with boar was the cheap VDH boar from their deluxe kit. The sale tipped me over the edge. I'm extremely glad I took a chance on this brush as I've only used it 3 times so far, but it's already softer than my best badger brushes and I have a feeling it will be my favorite brush once broken in.

My Semogue SOC 2-Band badger in cherry arrived on Friday, and I had my first shave with it Sunday night. First, its a beautiful brush thats a compliment to my SOC boar to a "T". It has just the right amount of backbone will still providing soft tips, and from what I understand they will only get better after some uses. The handle feels great and well balanced over the entire brush, obviously having the nicely etched "Semogue Owners Club"! Stunning.
Thanks again for the great service, and very fair prices. I'll say again, I think you offer some of the absolute best values in wetshaving...that being Semogue brushes!

More info coming soon.
Dear Customer,
The new Semogue Special Edition 2012 shaving brushes are here.
This brush has a 24 mm knot and 52 mm loft made of a blend of finest badger hair (new type) and 90% tops boar hair, similar to the the famous Caravela brush.
The handle of these brushes is also something unique. It was designed after the popular SOC handle. The material is the same as the one used in the LE 2011. It's a very strong and tough, marble-like black acrylic fiber with some faint veins that give a classy and vintage look. As always, the base of the handle will have the Semogue signature - the Semogue logo and the year of production 2012.
The shaving brush specifications are as follows:
Handle material - acrylic resin (the same used in our limited edition 2011)
Knot - Badger/Boar mixture (the same used in our famous "Semogue Caravela")
Handle Height: 55mm
Handle Diameter (base): 38mm
Knot Height: 52mm
Knot Diameter: 24mm
Ring: 3mm
Overall Height: 110mm

The 2015 is silvertip badger hair. Very nice brush, no doubt. I suggest you go for the HD version, a denser knot. If you like acrylic handles, then I definitely suggest the 730HD (http://vintagescent.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=23).
