Understand that Bernd @Shavemac changed the hair in his brushes a few years ago. Many have said that the replacement is significantly different, perhaps inferior. Has anyone shaved with both so they can compare? Are any of these [old] brushes available? I've never seen one for sale on this site or any other.

Cant answer to the comparison of old vs new in Shavemacs, but Ive purchased over half a dozen of the newer ones along with Plissons, Simpsons, etc and havent found the Shavemacs wanting. Older ones come up occasionally on the sale forum, although seldom. Ive heard that bernd still offers brushes in the older bristle if requested, I think its the pre 2005 bristle.

This question has been brought up before. I have both older and new brushes. I can unequivocally state that their is no difference in quality. Buy a new brush and be happy.

Not in quality, but absolutely in bristle properties....

I have both old and new. I love them both! I notice a slight difference in color of bristles, but other than that they seem to perform the same. I would not hesitate in buying another ShaveMac if I wanted one! They're great!!!

Peter, in your case, it's quantity.

I don't have or own the pre 2005 shavemac but I do own a shavemac 177 with his standard silvertip and a custom build shavemac with his higher grade silvertip and like Drp said. The quality is the same in both but the bristle properties are completely different. My vote goes for the higher grade which is supposed to be the equal of the pre 2005 hair used. I even have a second one in the making with the same bristles. Again, this is a personal thing.

My understanding is that the pre-2005 was scrubbier than silvertip, and the current 'higher grade' is supposedly softer than silvertip. How could they be the same?

The higher grade for me is scrubbier but with extremely soft tips compared to my shavemac 177 silvertip which is less scrubbier but very soft . So yes, the higher grade is softer than the silvertip and the hair is more resilient and scrubbier compared to the 177 silvertip. The 177 silvertip also blooms more compared to the higher grade that basically hasn't bloomed much. Like I said I have no clue how the pre 2005 feels like but I spoke several times with Bernd about the higher grade and he told me in his own words that the new higher grade hair he's offering is close to the pre 2005 he was offering at the time.

I think there has been similar discussion in this thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=44178).
