View Full Version : Honemeisters? Here's a list ...

Folks, from time to time I see threads asking for honemeister services. But there's no one central location for all the information about who the 'honemeisters' are (I'll call them "HMs" for short), where they are located, or what their fees are. So ... here we go.

The regular visitors to this list will probably notice some significant changes of late. Gone are the different categories of HMs; instead, everyone is just listed, be it a big business like Classicshaving that hires HMs, some guy with a few hones and some spare time, or anything in between.

Honemeisters

This list is, obviously, incomplete. It will be, as well, a fluid collection of info as old HMs retire and new HMs join the scene. I invite HMs to post below all the necessary information, which I will edit into this post. Please post again if any of your information changes (rates, address, whatever) and I will re-edit.

Members, please feel free to encourage your HM to contact me if you know of a HM that you can recommend ... I considered posting HM contact information on a Member's recommendation, but decided against it as I don't want to post someone's address or e-mail without their permission. Of course, if your HM has his own website, post or PM the link!

Legal: Nothing in this post or this thread can be taken as any sort of endorsement by B&B (or by me or any of the Mods) of the services mentioned. This is simply a collection point for information, not an assessment of the services offered. While I will try to keep the information here relatively current, we do not guarantee the accuracy of the information provided, and it is your obligation to contact the HM in question to finalise any honing service.

World-wide: B&B has a very ecclectic, international membership from all corners of the Globe. Please provide information on what parts of the globe you are willing to ship to, and the prices for that. Members are encouraged to check with any prospective HM to see if he will actually mail honed razors to your location before sending off the razor in the mail!!

Real Names: I prefer to list HMs by their real names, addresses and e-mails. I will not be listing internet forum pseudonyms or suggestions that members "just PM so-and-so". I want this to be as transparent and factual as possible, so that our members can get the full information without further work, and the HMs are not 'hiding' behind a pseudonym. (E-mail addresses will be listed in such a way that you cannot simply click on the address to e-mail, to attempt to hinder spam and such. An example would be ... cookiemonster "at" sesame_street dot com.) As some people wish to minimise the amount of their personal info on the internet, I will allow a reduced disclosure of contact information for B&B members in good standing.

Actual Prices: I will be listing HMs who provide, here on on a linked website, their rates for honing and shipping. I will not be listing HMs who simply request a PM or e-mail to discuss rates; we'll be able to do our comparison shopping right here!

No discussion of honing quality. This thread is merely to provide the information to reach the HMs. Any discussion in this thread about a HM's skills (good, bad or indifferent) will be deleted as soon as possible. If you want to have that discussion, start or join some other thread about that (within the bounds of gentlemanly discussion and the other Terms Of Use that apply to B&B.) Maybe these guys do a good job, maybe not so much. As one B&B wit once remarked, a "honemiester" can be defined as "a guy with a hone and an ego". I guess the point is, this is just a list of guys who call themselves HMs, so take it with a grain of salt.

This is a good idea, though I am reluctant to post my rates in a public. I do have a hone, and an ego... but I like to think I keep both in check.

My info:

Real Name: Daniel Gauthier
Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
email: [email protected]
Honing Rate: $12 plus return shipping per blade, volume discounts applicable to lots of 5 or more blades.

Info: I can repair and/or hone razors of all types, sizes and grinds. I also offer a variety of finishing methods and fast turnaround. International customers are welcome. Restoration services including custom scales, blade polishing, shaping and repinning also available. Please PM or email me for specifics, I have a very detailed and long-winded summary which I normally send out to interested parties. References readily available for both my honing and restoration work.

Hi - just thought I'd post this as suggested by a member. I don't particularly like the word 'honemeister' so I'll just say that I sharpen razors. Anyway, details as follows:

Name: Steve Dempster
Location: UK
relevant site: http://www.razorsharpening.co.uk
email:[email protected]
All rates are posted on the site, no hidden 'extras' - what you see is what you pay. The site is fully e-commerce equipped and all payments are via PayPal. Due to customs restrictions (i.e. having to pay duty to 'import' a razor that has a declared value greater than £18 - and this works both ways) my services are to UK and EC countries only. Services are all described on the website but briefly are cleaning, polishing and honing, also re-pinning though I do not offer a custom scale service. Thanks!

Glen M.
PM's go to my e-mail anyway but it is gssixgun on aol.com ( you know how to really address that)
I only take on work, if I can complete it in a timely professional manner, if I am swamped, I will tell ya...

Location: Nth Idaho

Rates: Standard Hone Work is $15 plus $5 return shipping (Tracked and Insured) if I can't insure it, that worries me...so CONUS unless we talk first...
I return the razor "ready to shave", including complete polishing, and stropping.... (I want that 1st shave to be a benchmark for you, of my edges)

I do Complete Restorations, and Damage Repair also, I can normally estimate that with a pic sent to my e-mail.......

I wanted to add my name to the list.

No fee for honing. You pay shipping back and forth. CONUS only.

I live in Austin, Texas for those in the Central Texas area but I don't restrict to just Texas. If you are going to be in the area let me know and I can hone while you wait or run your errands. Maybe even get a small honing lesson, free of course. If you are interested let me know when you plan to mail razor as I like to be home when the mail delivery person comes to the house.

PM if interested. Thanks.

Anyone know of a honemeister in southern CA ... Orange county if possible!!

I am the guy that made these videos (as well as some other written tutorials): http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=47303

I live in Los Angeles (Southern Culver City specifically) and would be willing to hone a razor and/or give some lessons to beginners that have a strong enough interest in the hobby to come to my house at a time that works for both of us. A while ago I was swamped with honing jobs at $20 plus return shipping (all my customers really liked my edges) but I don't have time to do any honing with shipping since I am studying 30+ hours a week for the CPA's, working full time, and trying to spend what little remaining time that I do have with my girlfriend (as opposed to honing, packaging, and standing in line at the post office).

As of today I am no longer accepting honing jobs due to a very heavy work schedule. I anticipate this to last through March. Once this period is over I will post again to advise I am back. To those that have been waiting, my most sincere apologies for the delay in returning blades and I appreciate your patience.

I can, but I'm not honing right now due to packing/unpacking from the move.
I'm actually set up to be able to use nothing but Japanese naturals and traditional techniques if the customer requests it. Otherwise I use man made stones and pastes. I'll be back in business in a few weeks.

Afternoon gentlemen,

I am once again taking razors. Due to operational costs associated with honing, I have to add fees to each blade.

First blade $15
additional blades $5

plus $5 shipping with tracking numbers.

Blades with major repair(chips and small crack) will be slightly higher depending on each specific blade. Once I take a look at the blade I will contact you to advise cost and time frame. I will not start major edge repair until I get the OK form the owner. Thank you.

International shipping is a flat $5 for uninsured post for the first three razors. International blades may take a bit longer to ship as I have to actually schedule time to wait in line at the PO.

Hi All,

I will say straight out, I am no honemeister, but I do have the tools and skills to sharpen a razor with which I can comfortably shave.

I am not going to charge anything for honing your razor other than shipping costs at this point, as I do not feel I quite deserve that yet. I would simply like to get some surplus experience and feedback on where I could improve. I am offering basic razor honing for free, and also restorative honing for $10 due to the extra time involved.

Contact info:
Name: Matt (sapito318)
Email: sapito318 (@) Gmail (dot) com
Price: Free honing, you pay shipping costs
Shipping: $5 Flat Rate, up to 3 razors, $1 extra per additional razor

I would like to add my name to this list. I did free honing here for the months of September and October, and have a nice list of very satisfied customers.
My services are very straight forward, $15 for the first razor and $10 for each additional. Return first class shipping with a tracking number is included in the price. Insurance or other options will be additional. International orders are welcome, but there may be additional charges for return postage.

You can either place you order on my website www.straightrazorsharp.com where I take paypal and Credit Cards, or pm me for more information.

Thanks for looking,

I would like to offer my honing services to the community.

RAZOR HONING:

Prices start $15 per razor, extra $5 for any grind heavier than 1/2 hollow.
Blade repairs such as frown correction, chip removal will be done at additional $5 per razor.
Although I give estimate of the price for each razor, based on the information given by the customer, Ideally I'd like to see the razors for most accurate quote.
For honing razors, I use a variety of stones both synthetic as well as natural. I like to have a lot of versatility in my stone selection to be able to work effectively with any type of steel I may encounter.
I always finish on Nakayma Japanese natural stone for the smoothest edge possible.

My synthetic progression:
Naniwa Chosera 1k
Naniwa Chosera 3k
Naniwa Super Stone 5k
King 8k
Naniwa Superstone 10k

My natural progression:
Yaginoshima Suita 3-8k
Shinden Sunashi Shiro Suita 8-20k
Nakayama Kiita 30k+
Nakayama Maruichi Maruka 30k+
Nakayama Asagi 30k+

My stone gallery can be found here:

One thing I would very much like to know is what hones you use, and in what progression. Without giving away the farm, I'd like to know how you get to the finished product because it may influence what hones I will eventually look to buy and use.

For example, if you have the option of finishing on a Coticule or a ceramic, I might send you a razor to be finished on each - or better yet, the same razor a few months later to get an idea of how the different hones affect the edge and quality of shaves.

Apologies if this info is listed somewhere else and I just missed it.

Cheers:thumbup:

I had my vintage Tagore Solingen ~5/8 full hollow ground, honed by Vintages Scent's Bruno (Leon @ B&B)

It's my first straight, so I actually have nothing to compare to, but I've wetshaved with a DE for many years & I do know what a good shave with a sharp blade feels like, & this blade was both smooth & really sharp.
Allthough my skills with a straight obviously has room for improvement,
the blade just went thru my whiskers like nothing, I didn't even feel them get cut, only heared the sound of them go :thumbup1:
Bruno is also very helpful & a nice guy to deal with, so I will definitely send more razors his way.

Yes, really.
I sent a Kamisori to Classic Shaving thinking that Lynn would be honing it. I started having doubts when I saw that he was honing at SRD. I exchanged a couple of PMs with him at SRP. He confirmed that he was not honing for them anymore, but said they're good at it, and that I shouldn't worry.

I emailed Classic Shaving inquiring who was honing for them. They replied saying that it's Tim Zowada.

No! It's not me! I occasionally do a special job . Or, inspect something. But, I don't do regular honing for anyone.

I don't know if Classicshaving wants the names released. So I won't. They do have two guys doing the bulk of the honing. I trained one of them. He's good.

I'll throw my name into the ring as I have honed about 400 professionally now in addition to about 250 of my own razors. I use the Naniwa super stones to 12K, then use CrOx paste the strop on bridle.
Rates: $10 undamaged touch ups with only very minor bevel setting on hollow grinds. This includes your wedge blades and any grinds for touch ups only. Many undamaged ebay blades get this rate.
$15 for major bevel setting without chips and bevel setting for wedge grinds.
Chips and Damaged Blades: done on a per-case basis.

All rates must ad $5 for return shipping regardless of number of blades. SHipping is always USPS Priority mail flat rate box. International rates will be on a per case basis.

I take all size orders and actually do a rate as low as $7/ razor for orders over 15 razors that are undamaged so contact me if you need honing.

Is there a "honemeister" from continental Europe? And how often in a year would I need to sharpen a straight razor (TI), which I will use once a week? I am toying with the idea to buy a nice straight razor for my luxury setup on weekends. And another question, how much time and experience is needed to get the skills of honing?

Well, I've many, many (I lost count) razors honed for my customers and I've a nice setup of hones and I'm on continental Europe.
You won't need to sharpen a razor very often. You'll only need to refresh the edge keeness, which is a different process - it doesn't need a setup of hones just like you need to set the bevel. Just strop properly and once in a while use pasted strops or a fine finishing hone to dial the edge.

Enjoy

Just got my Griffon Carbo-Magnetic back from Ray-man (http://www.straightrazorsharp.com/). It is a great shave again... thanks Ray! :001_smile

Also note: He is listed as rayman in the honemeister list, but his handle here is actually Ray-man.

To make the update and entries of honemeister easier, I created a wiki page.

You can now quickly look at a honemeister details for your own region!

or

I will be taking a break from September 12th through November 7th. I will need the time to concentrate on my wedding :)

My terms/conditions page will be taken down a week before I stop and put back when I'm ready to start accepting work again.

Many thanks to all my clients, private and commercial.

Any honemeisters in Norway? Or do I have to learn this myself? ^^ Can't ship it to EU countries thanks to the price/custom of importing a razor.

I would think that a single straight razor would go as "small parcel" and wouldn't be stuck in custom much. I can be mistaken. I would recommend contacting one of the gent in the UK and check with them if they know someone in Norway or honed for someone in Norway before...

I want to send out my W&B 8/8 hollow ground to get honed. In searching for someone to send it out to I found this old thread. Are there any additions or deletions that should be made to keep it updated?

I need my straight razor Honed, I just received a set from a vendor and I don't think I have a proper stone. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas on the Southeast side by Brooks City Base. Where are you located?

I will just state the facts (so I don't sound judgmental):

- I sent five straight razors for sharpening to Straight Razors Designs;

- The cost of the service was increased (from $20 to $25) with comparison with the price from several months ago;

- The return shipping was overpriced (the real price was $12.65 they charged me $24);

- It took more than one month to get my razors back!;

- I never received any feedback about some issues with the razors, even though I have requested it!;

- Package came with only a small note in it, stating (exact quote):

“Your razor has been honed, shave tested and disinfected. We have also placed a thin coat of Camellia Oil over the
blade to protect it. When you receive the razor, all you need to do is wipe off the oil and give it an initial stropping.

We hope you enjoy this razor.

Thank you, Don and Lynn”

- All the razors came covered with dirty camellia oil!;

- None of them passed the HHT (after wiping the oil off, of course) nowhere along the blade!;

- I was unable to shave even 2 cm. of my beard with none of the five razors after stropping (despite the note that came
in the package)!

I will leave it to you guys to make your own conclusions!

P.S. And do not even let me post my review on their web site!
