View Full Version : Most Over-rated Cream/Soap

Well Brandon's under-rated thread instantly made me think of a lot more contentious thread topic:

What do you think is the most over-rated, over-hyped shave cream or soap?

From what I have used to date I would cast a vote for Tom's Peppermint. Compared to everything else I have tried, it is by far my least favorite, least fun cream.

Naturally every post in this thread should end with YMMV, IMHO, ASAP, PDQ, XYZ, etc...:001_smile

I tried Nancy Boy from the sample set from Scotto. I was as disappointed in it as much as I was delighted with the C&E Almond Oil when I first got it.

I think it has to do with expectations (at least in my case). The C&E was such a pleasant surprise that I almost started laughing. But it was my first high end cream.

I had read such ecstatic reviews of the Nancy Boy before it arrived that it couldn't possibly live up to my image.

I don't really know exactly how highly or lowly rated C&E Sandalwood is, but I don't think it performs well at all. The lather dries and dissipates quickly, within the time of 2 passes sometimes even, and isn't very slick to me. I find that pretty odd, because it's only Sandalwood that is like that. The Sweet Almond Oil cream works up into a great, moisturizing, rich, longlasting lather.

The cream that has disappointed me the most? GFT Coconut oil.
Maybe it's an old stock tube or something, the scent is hardly noticeable and the lather is not that impressive.

Arko. I'm sure most of us have so serious cash invested in soaps and creams, so what's the big deal about a $2 soap that shaves like it cost $4? I rank it with Palmolive. It's a good no-frills cream, but if I can afford it, I want the frills.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. I'll be relieved when my current supply is used up (getting close now, man this stuff lasts a long time). To me, I have the classic sandalwood and the C&E on my counter. The classic performs much better than the C&E. Part of it might be because the C&E is hard milled, whereas the classic isn't. But the C&E dries up faster, is less slick, and harder to work into a lather. I have some Mamma Bear on order, and I'm eager to compare Mamma's with these other two.

Now the other interesting thing is that on the straight razor place, classic's soaps get nothing but rave reviews, whereas here, they are not so well regarded. Fascinating that opinions vary so much.

I'm gonna have to vote for NB after my terrible shave this AM.

I hadn't used NB in three weeks or so and have been using MB/QED soaps mainly.

This week I've returned to creams and have used GFT Violet and Taylor's Avocado.. both of which kicked NB's butt!

I may use it again tomorrow (although the thought of using the same thing two days in a row makes me sad!) without the Proraso pre to see if that effected the quality of NB for some reason.

Overrated to me generally applies to very high and very low priced items and the voices of the masses who profess the overiding qualities and features of these items.

That being said, I feel that most of the perfume house shaving creams are overrated based on price and that most of the cheap brands are overrated based on characteristics that fail to make them unique.

My opinion? Taylors. Sure it is cheaper than Trumper and some of the other creams, but it just isn't the amazing stuff (IMHO) that it is sometimes made out to be. I second that. I’m very much into floral scents and the Salter rose cream is absolutely repulsive. It smells like rubber mixed with rose, although I concede it provides a good lather. I ordered a tub of Trumper Rose in order to compare them.

I will offer another vote for the Taylors line. At first I really enjoyed a number of their creams but after a couple of uses I realized that they just did not work well with my face. The only one I still have is Avocado and while it is decent I certainly do not feel it is the be-all-end-all that many profess.

I will also toss in a vote for Proraso "Red". The scent is repulsive.

Ah, I wouldn't worry. We all have our like and dislikes, there are several creams and soaps I don't care for either. I haven't tried Mama Bear, and I can't justify spending any more on/using space up for more soap/creams right now. Besides, there are other things I blow my money on, like that 250 dollar olive colored Ralph Lauren sportcoat I saw today...

Richard,

I'm not sure what it was. I bought both EO and FO soaps with similar effects. By the time I started my second pass, I could feel little needles jabbing my face all over. Afterwards I'd have to do recovery for a few days (lots of moisturizer and creams).

My skin is a bit on the oily side and a product that is too oily gives me acne, so I consider drying soap a plus for my particular skin type.

However, the soap must provide sufficient lubrication to allow blade to glide over skin without giving me a razor burn. How would you rate L'occitane soap in this regard?

It is, but I really had to play around with my tube of Proraso until I figured out how to make a great bowl of lather based upon the water coming out of my sink. +1 on the Proraso green tube. I just can't warm to this stuff. The smell has always seemed to me to be akin to a pine scented industrial strength floor cleaner. It seems to dry quickly on my face, plus it leaves a gummy residue on my razor and in my sink. Even at it's relatively low price point I believe there are much better alternatives, but I know that I am in the minority here.

I used to think Nancy Boy was poor until I lathered it directly on my face, its totally different and much better used this way. Try lathering it in a bowl/mug etc and its no good. I think people have a lot of problems because they are not using a decent brush or are trying to lather in a mug or cup, just my 2 pence worth.

I agree with Tony about applying Nancy Boy directly. They say it can be used with or without a brush, but it does work much better if applied without one. My vote for most over-rated goes to Tom's. The texture is kind of lumpy and gross.

Taylor's Avocado is over-rated for me.
I got a decent shave from it, but nothing great.
The smell is what really killed it for me though... worst smelling stuff I ever bought.
Used twice and couldn't take it anymore. Just sits in the back of my cabinet now.

I second that. I’m very much into floral scents and the Salter rose cream is absolutely repulsive. It smells like rubber mixed with rose, although I concede it provides a good lather. I ordered a tub of Trumper Rose in order to compare them.

Salter Wild Rose makes great lather and the scent is just fine. Now that you point it out I do detect the slightest rubber smell, but it's not offensive to me.

But we dig you anyway, Jon.

I gotta say it has to be ARKO for me. Everyone in these forums are pretty much split on Arko. at 2.99 a tube, I wasn't going to fret if it turned out to be bad. It was. I'm always going to give something a second try (did this with Trumper's and glad that I did). If it turns out like crap again, I'll pass it on to one of my enemi... er, I mean friends, or bury deeply in the back yard.

Arko soap, however, ROCKS.

I just don't get the hoopla over Tabac soap -- the lather seems thin and ineffective.

You are lathering it wrong, plain and simple. I've never heard anyone complain about thin lather with Tabac.

Even the most average soaps and creams can be lathered well if you know how to use a brush properly. The shave might not be so good, however.

Jon, respecting the Ingrams it may help if you took a little time to come to centre, say a few "ohms" while sitar music plays in the background, and then apply the cream. This may work for you. Regardless, if you film it, it will certainly be interesting to watch on YouTube!

Just shows you the true meaning of YMMV. I absolutely love Mama Bear's soaps. Smooth, fragrant, great shave, etc., etc. Everything I could possible want in a shaving soap is right there.
BTW, I also like Nancy Boy, and some of the respondents on this thread haven't been overly enthusiastic about it.
But I challenge anyone to come out and say anything good about Caswell-Massey.

Well,.... It's very very cheap at Tuesday Morning.

If you use 2X or 3X the normal amount of product, and work it like crazy, you can get a marginally passible lather,... usually.

That's about as 'good' as this stuff gets. Sad, really. :crying:

It's a neat sounding name. It actually rolls off the tongue quite nicely. If it was any good I would really like saying, "Caswell-Massey". Oh...um...I kind of like their packaging. If it was any good I think it would look nice sitting out on the vanity in my bathroom.

I think pretty much all of the salter creams have that rubber/plastic smell to it. I had to get rid of the citrus variant, as it just smelled like plastic to me... VERY OFFENSIVE to my nose. I like their mint offering, but the plastic smell is still present... odd.

All of mine have this scent. I'm guessing that the cream is all identical with the scent added at the end.

Oh yeah.. another one I forgot:

Taylor's Shaving Shop. Absolutely horrid smell. It literally smells like an old high school locker room that hasn't been cleaned in a few weeks. I've never smelled something so similar to body order (B.O.) before.

Makes me gag when I use it. A lot of people rave about the scent, but there's stuff that's "meh" and stuff that smells bad, and then at the bottom of that list... WAY at the bottom, is the unholy concoction that is ToOBS Shaving Shop cream.

I agree that that scent is present in all of their creams, but to my nose it's more medicinal than plastic. Either way, though, I don't find it too offensive.

Richard,

I'm not sure what it was. I bought both EO and FO soaps with similar effects. By the time I started my second pass, I could feel little needles jabbing my face all over. Afterwards I'd have to do recovery for a few days (lots of moisturizer and creams).

BUT... using Honey Bee Spa soaps has been WONDERFUL!:a29: They smell great and are absolutely 100% comfortable.

I can't say enough good about those soaps.

Tottaly agree, HBS soaps are the best for me.

Most overated I think goes to DR Harris I expected so much from it since many people think its the last of the good non-reformulated creams, but I feel that Floris of London is much better. DR Harris was a disapointment.

I saw the Herban Cowboy cream in the store and it smelled great. Thanks for stopping me before I dropped cash on it.

Taylor Avocado still smells bad to me. Shaves great, but then I have to wash my face and put on a strong a/s to get rid of the smell.

Gents, i know i'm a noob and all, and that- as with everything in the shaving universe - YMMV. However I really have a hard time seeing how one can see MB soaps as being overrated, I mean, these things (along with tabac) really whip up a mean lather. There is a good reason for your disappointment - it's no longer "non-reformulated", much to the dismay of many members who were holding out a thread of hope that Harris would survive. AFAIK only T&H remains as it was, and who knows how long that will last.

Yet another vote for Trumper's Violet. It's cardboardish in scent and doesn't perform that good for me. Another vote could go to the Body Shop SC. Instead of providing easy glide, I think it provides nice increment in friction between blade and face. :glare:

C&E Sandalwood soap. It's like Williams mug soap but costs 4 times a much, and doesn't even have the decency to make a good, moist lather. I want my $$$ back. I guess with more experience this soap would probably work better but I like something that lathers quickly and feels slick, at the moment. Some people apparrently love triple milled soaps.

Well, it's not technically "over rated" since everyone rates it so poorly anyhow.

When a dissenting voice (which is allowed) claims MB is bad soap, well, we all scratch our heads in wonder and try to figure out what the fellow is doing wrong with his brush. But, to each his own.

(To be fair, I mentioned MB myesore sandalwood as over-rated, but only in the scent department, as I really can't smell much scent in it and others have raved about the scent of that one ... but it's otherwise great.)

That might be it, but also I've noticed that it's really easy to put too much water in....

Nancy Boy is intended as a brushless cream, after all. If you try to whip up lather like Trumper's you may end up whipping too much air in. I would say wet your face to use it, and then put it on with NO water, and see where that gets you....

I'm not in agreement that Trumper's has been reformulated. Two recent pots purchased directly from Trumper's have been excellent. About Harris I'm not sure since I have had only samples of recent creams, and samples can be misleading. Another important point is that the fact that a cream has been reformulated does not mean that it is bad. I have had excellent results with two tubs of Taylor's that I have purchased recently--and that has been reformulated.

Rock bottom worst for me are the Surrey soaps - worse performance than bath soaps and a horrid, acrid smell.

Most overrated is King of Shaves. Overrated in general that is. It seems most folks on this board see it for what it is - the Bose Wave of shaving creams.

Taylor's Rose is the best cream I've tried period. As far as performance goes the rest of the line is way behind and not really worth the money IMO. Scent wise I like Lavander and, to lesser extent, Lemon-Lime - the rest of the range goes from mildly unpleasant (sandalwood) to repulsive (all the cologne creams). This experience has given me no incentive to try the more expensive Brit creams.

The new Edge creams in the tubes are a very good, high performance product but their cost ends up being nearly twice that of Taylor's Rose and the scent is not anywhere near as good.

In regard to the other Taylor's scents, I have to recommend the almond. it is not too sweet but also not too muted; it is a true almond which is strange as taylor's usually doesn't have 'true' scents. Lathered up with it yesterday and it gave a great shave. Not as good as the rose, but better than the avacado.

ProRaso is most overrated for me (clearly YMMV). It dries my skin up something awful, and the performance is fine but nothing special. I think some people may respond better to nuclear menthol bombs than others.

GFT Violet cream scent is kind of nasty, so I'd go with the overrated crowd on that. [I really like their other creams and soaps, so this is scent only, not performance]

Nancy Boy is fabulous for me, so I have to dissent on that one.

AOS Unscented cream. Smells like "Unscented" hand lotion and doesn't lather for me worth a drat. Generally uninspiring and not much fun. If all of my MB was gone, I'd go find some Williams, or heck, maybe even Foamy before I use this stuff again.

Just received a tub of GFT Violette in trade..I have to say, it lathers like crazy, but the shave was not the greatest. It must be the Violette, because it just didn't provide much protection..my face definitely didn't want anymore than 2 passes. Oh well, it does lather well.

Overrated? I don't know if it can be called that, as it's been binned pretty well here, but it's not the first cream I'll reach for.

Three over-hyped for me:

- From creams, it has to be L'Occitane cream. If you need to buy or use this, you may as well get some sandpaper.

- Tabac soap didn't seem all that good that it was made out to be. It's glycerin based so for me it didn't feel as good (and smooth) as a triple-milled. Also, the scent didn't last as long as I'd liked it to.

- Anything from Taylor's. Sorry guys but their range just doesn't seem to cut it. Their creams are very drying, although not half as bad as L'Occitane.

While it is by no means the worst, IMO the most overrated is Trumpers.

Is the Arko referred to on here the same as Acca Kappa? Because the latter is selling for £65 at the Gentlemen's Shop (approx US$130)

Most overrated soap: l'Occitane (more drying than pure alcohol :nonod:)

L'Occitane gets my vote too. Vowed never to let the stuff near my face again.

For me the most over-rated if GFT Rose soap. I love the scent, get a nice lather, however, the shave is just never as good as when I use the Taylor's Lavender Soap, GR cream, or Floris cream (the latter two are my favorites).

I tried some L'Occitane today as an experiment. This is the non-CADE L'Occitane. Since bad lather ruins my karma and may lead to lots of nicks, I went with a Mach 3. (I have been using Dorco and Astra Superior in different razors.) The shave was close, but the lather was runny and almost transparent -- no matter how much cream I used. And it burned a little, too. My pH problem again.

It was old L'Occitane, but my equally aged Proraso is still an excellent cream.

I may throw out L'O to save space and prevent the SWBO question "how many shaving creams do you have?

I'm in the group who likes the fragrance.

So you both think Nancy Boy is over rated. I'm glad I didn't waste my money on it. In what way did it let you down?

You're not asking me, but NB is supremely brushless. It is like slathering a thick layer of Noxema -- not Noxema shave cream, the original ointment -- on your face. Very cooling, but nothing like your classic lather.

Noxema might work as well and cost less.

I find both NB creams give incredible shaves and moisturize the face. You can whip it up with a brush, shave gently, and boom - BBS after two passes, and your skin feels great. I get better shaves from the NB creams in two passes than with a lot of top end cream on four (and I usually stop at two or three), and my face feels great all day.

This string in particular show just how much YMMV. I think Proraso is the most overrated cream, and quite like the TOBS and GFT creams (but like the NB creams even more).

I am not sure they are over-rated, but Caswell-Massey and Anne Lee's soaps are just awful. Both have weak lather that disappears instantly.

Although my list constantly changes, my A-team of soaps right now is: L'Occitane, Floris, CE Nomad, Tabac, and Mama Bear.

I have to agree with this regarding Speick cream. I received some as a Christmas gift and wanted to like it, but have yet to get a good shave with this stuff.

The first shave gave me some weepers and a lot of sting from the alum block, and subsequent shaves with careful preparation, different razors, or fresh blades haven't been much better. It's especially bad on my lower neck for some reason.

Have you tried lathering on your face? I've noticed this with QED soaps, they seem to be better suited for face lathering. If ya don't want it, lemme know!!!

All scented soaps/creams; IMO scent adds nothing to the quality of the shave and may actually detract. If you want scent; use a scent not a soap and I do not want alcohol on my face.

This morning I tried Herban Cowboy for the first time (a Christmas present from the wife). Unlike Caswell-Massey and Anne Lee's, it easily produced a lather in the bowl, on the brush, and on my face (though it was a thin lather). But, like those others, the lather began to disappear rapidly. By the end of each pass there was no visible lather on my face or even still on the brush. Also, the thin lather does not provide much of a shave even at the beginning of the pass.

I don't understand these companies. Disappearing lather is such a fatal flaw in a shave soap. Once they realize that their products are so defective, why don't they reformulate?

!?!? I haven't found a cream for any price that creates such creamy thick shiny slick lather as Speick, and it makes my face feel great too. No offense to you guys, I'm just really shocked.

I think I have a idea though, so don't be surprised if I PM you and ask for your favorites. Here's the idea...find the people who keep liking the products I do and find out what else they like. Might work.....

Working on the general assumption that tastes vary (tastes very what?...)

I have to say that I have given away every C&E soap I have ever had--which includes Nomad, Almond, and Sienna. All of them dried my face up something terrible. Really wanted to like the Nomad, but...

Also dishonorable mention to Caswell and Massey. Lots of history, and some of the ancilliary products are alright but the soaps are shite.

Proraso. For me its not slick or protective, and I've tried all sorts of water ratios. My water is hard so maybe thats it. The only thing it does for me is give a nice cooling sensation. It also does not moisturize as well florena which for people in canada is comparable in price and availability.
