View Full Version : Perfume recommendations for wife

I'm thinking of buying my wife a high end perfume. She isn't a big perfume wearer -- and has never had anything remotely high-end. I want to get some samples for her to try and let her decide which one she likes.
She isn't wild about heavily floral scents. I'm terrible at describing scents, but I think she'd go for something spicy and/or citrusy -- maybe something that ad copy would describe as "mysterious."
Anyway, I know it's tough to recommend fragrances for someone else, but does anyone have any ideas? One I do want to get is Creed Love in White, since it seems that most people like it. (even though it's description seems like it might be floral.)
And where would you recommend getting samples for a reasonable price?

I got my wife Chanel No. 5 and it "smeels" really good on her. We did a test spray at the mall first...

Consider getting a sampler Penhaligons makes a very nice one:
http://www.penhaligons.co.uk/shop/fragrance/try-me/ladies-eau-de-toilette-box-of-4-497097.html
While there are some florals, they have significant deep/complex notes (sandalwood, amber, musk, oakmoss, etc.) and are definitely not cloying/sweet like cheaper florals.
In addition, the packaging is fantastic and the price is quite reasonable.
I bought one for my SO and she really enjoys having such a wide range of scents to choose from.
Fragonard (a well know perfume house in France) has some great scents and some very interesting, reasonably priced samplers:

I suggest a sampler because it really allows someone to experience a company's range and, in the case of someone who hasn't tried a lot of high-end scents, a change to experience the difference quality makes.
Also, you won't be wasting too much money if there are particular scents that your wife doesn't like.
The samplers from these companies present well and make great gifts - they're classy, cute, fun and thoughtful.

For niche and mysterious, you might look into the sampler pack from Ormonde Jayne. Ormonde Woman (or Man for that matter) is deep, dark, and mysterious. The whole line-up is quality and different.
Or there's divine.fr, who also flies below the radar with some great scents.
Also, for individual scent samplers, there's luckyscent.

I agree. This is a good route to take with some quality scents.

+2 on that Penhaligon's Sampler.. The ladies love that Ellenisia and Artemesia.. Serious, plus you can keep the Men's samplers for yourself.. If you want something that is easier on the wallet, try out Vera Wang's Perfums.. smell very high end, without the price..
Best of luck to you!

+1
The Ormonde Jayne scents are incredibly beautiful and worth the price.
Also, try Guerlain Shalimar in Parfum strength, very subtle, mysterious and pleasing.

I got the Penhaligon's ladies sampler for my mother and she LOVED it. I think I got promoted a rank in the will. She jumped on ALL four of them (Lily & Spice, Ellenisia, Artmesia, and Malabah).
Oh and on a further aside -- I got a bunch of extra samples of Penhaligon's, both male and female, and I went ahead and gave those to her as well. She also liked Opus 1870 and Endymion. For herself!!!

+1 on fragonard... their sampler pack is quite diverse. She has to find something she likes.
Penhaligon's would also make a good high end addition.
I also recommend requesting feminine samples from Floris.
Strip and Maitresse from Agent Provacateur two scents that small great on my wife. The original AP is a tad floral but in a lipstick lesbian sort of way.

Agent Provocatuer makes a sexy scent for women I think.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'm gonna get her the Ormonde Jayne and Pehaligon samples. Those should last her for quite a while as it is, and it should be fun trying them all out.
