A truly horrible shave. I first started out with the Avalanche cream which smelled great but was a thin, soupy, no-lather mess in my bowl even with minimal water being used to try and stir the stuff into something usable. I used the slurry for 1 pass and then dumped it all out.

I then picked up the chocolate sample and had the same results. I'm now at a 3-2 win/loss record for all the samples I bought.

At least the Proraso did not suck.

BBS shave, but not without some damage. Either the Swede's aren't quite as sharp as I thought, or my technique sucks, or both. :biggrin: Several nicks/weepers while shaving but pretty much all of them had stopped by the time I was done.

I have to say, the 39C does an awesome job. I'm gonna stick with it -- hopefully I'll learn what I'm doing wrong. Want to try it w/a Feather to see if that'll stop the pulling that I felt w/the Swede.

The Feather blade is stilll going strong. This was the last blade in a sample pack and I have to say this gives me least irritation than an of the others. I think it might be becuase I'm giving it a lot more respect and in turn it is giving me better shaves.

TOBS Avocado is great. Used the Mr Taylors yesterday, not as impressed.

This was going to be the first shave with a Gillette Slim, which I received yesterday and scubbed and washed carefully (but didnt boil). It cleaned up well, and I loaded up the blade and lathered up, made on pass on my cheek, and rinsed it and..... the sink was FULL of black, brown floaty gunky bits...looks like they were hiding under the adjustable plate at the base... Hit the brakes and swith to my old Tech (after gagging a bit :tongue_sm) so, today ened up being:

Lever 2000? In the spirit of the instructions on the Palmolive Red tube and at the suggestion of Chris Moss in the thread over at SMF, I lightly loaded my brush with regular bath soap (instead of washing my face and not rinsing) before adding in the cream. It really allowed the heavy Musgo cream to break up and make a dense, wet, slick lather. I think this will be my MO from now on as I was previously underwhelmed by the Musgo Real SC.

First run with the IK soap today. It produced an interesting lather – kind of a mix between a traditional soap lather and lotion. It firmed up nicely in my Moss scuttle and produced a nice, cushiony second pass lather. Nice subtle and inoffensive fragrance also…

Dave...I know what you mean... I have recently acquired various Gillettes to include an HD Rocket, British #16 Aristocrat, Red Tip, and Slim Adjustable and none of them match up to the Merkur 38C. The closest shave next to the 38C is my Wilkinson Sword "Sticky" but at over 5 times the cost of the Merkur 38C it is not a bargain tool.

I made superlather today with some Triple-milled French Mint bath soap (don't remember the brand, but I got it at World Market) and Proraso. Very very nice. I think I always kind of knew it would work just fine, but I hadn't gotten around to trying it until today. I think tomorrow I will try Trader Joe's Tea Tree soap and KMF unscented. This could be a neat way to add some new scents to my rotation..

What razor did you use? A gillette? Is it easy to find? And please, where?

I used a Wilkinson Sword razor...they are fairly hard to find and a bit expensive. I purchased this one with a case from member jiphone via an ebay Buy It Now offering...

Mmmm...great shave. I really am starting to think that shave sticks help deliver a closer shave...as others have postulated, probably due to the soap being rubbed directly onto the beard, getting between hairs to soften a bit better...I don't know...but 2 shave stick shaves in a row and 2 near-perfect, "close-as-I've-ever-gotten-to-BBS" shaves.

Another plus is I had no irritation from the bathtub gin (which has burned before)...so all is right with the world.
