Hi,I just ordered a new Dovo Tortoise 6/8 razor, and since i wanted to learn how to hone I bought a Belgian coticule stone.
I was wondering if i can hone my new razor right out of the box using just the Belgian coticule?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Welcome to B&B!

A Belgian coticle is a finish hone. It may be too fine a grit. It depends on how good an edge the blade has to start.

If I may suggest, get the DOVO honed by an expert first, pick up another blade to learn to hone on. You will need a coarser hone to set the bevel on. You can learn on your first razor but it will probably not give good shaves.

Thank you.I think ill take your advice and send it out to have it honed by an expert.

I receantly just ordered a Dovo special Tortoise and was very pleased with it. I found that mine had a deceant edge to begin with and took it straight to my polishing hones and abrasive strop. In the case of this razor you should be good to go with your Belgian coticule. Good Luck!

I got good shaves from mine just by stropping it. Give it a whirl - worst comes to worst you can send it out to be honed.

Thank you for telling me that Austin.I guess ill see what condition the edge is when it arrives.
I also have a Dovo Bismarck black handle 6/8,which i got last week. When it arrived it was actually pretty sharp but bad practice stropping  has dulled it considerably.
Maybe i'll send one out to the classichsaving honing service and try and hone one mysef.

Haha,I know. But i love the idea of having razors that will last you forever if properly used.
