View Full Version : ReadyMade magazine features a wet shaving article
The March 2008 issue (#34) of ReadyMade magazine featured a nice little article about wet shaving. The article was pretty lite, but they did a good job of covering the basic equipment and major points of the process (prep, lathering, multiple passes, post). They reported that wet shaving is more environmentally friendly than goo and cartridges, since it was the "Green Issue". Also, they did say that DE blades were more economical than cartridges (of course, they didn't cover ADs ).
This issue also had an interesting recipe for home made shaving cream. The recipe and instructions looked really easy. If anyone tries out this recipe post the results.

ReadyMade is a great mag, I highly recommend it to those who haven't heard of it.
I looked for the article on the website, I am interested in the recipe, but I was unable to find it. Unfortunately can't find the mag locally.

If you're near a Whole Foods, they carry the mag, at least in CA.
unfortunately no. I did a search on their site and the closest place that carries it is 2 hours away.
Unfortunately, that section of the magazine "Ready-Whip" isn't available online.
Dear Mods,
Would posting the shaving cream recipe from my personal copy of ReadyMade magazine to this forum be considered "bad"?

I'm not a mod.
Scanning the magazine article and posting a .pdf of it would be considered bad, I think.
Typing in a short recipe would not be considered bad, I don't think.
I haven't been to their website recently but it's not unusual to have these sort of things available a month or two after the issue has been taken off newsstands. Like people really use that word "newsstands" anymore LOL.

Neat that Nancy Boy got a nod in the wetshaving article. . . Interesting that they have Borax as an ingredient in their shave cream:eek:

Last night I diligently bought all the ingredients listed on the recipe to make this cream for my husband. I followed the instructions provided and ended up with a nice smelling soup. It appears that there was too much water. I was a little disappointed because the ingredients are expensive overall.
I am interested in hearing your results.

They have a discussion forum (low usage but what the heck...) so I registered and left a message plugging the hobby.

Yep, I tried making the cream too. It is crap ... too soupy and didn't lather worth a damn. Luckily, I already had most of the ingredients, so I didn't break the bank trying.
Live and learn.

it says to store in airtight container for up to 6months im assuming it hardens with time allowing for lathering

There was another homemade recipe and it said you had to wait 2 weeks for something magical to happen in the cream. Only then would it lather right. I did try making that other recipe but it went horribly wrong.
It's also nice to see a vintage razor in the equipment section.
Has anyone picked up on the irony of a magazine titled _Ready Made_ publishing a recipe to make your own shaving cream?

Three cheers for Mark!
Nope, it is a bad recipe. I tried it immediately, a few days later and a week later ... the lather was so runny I didn't even attempt to shave with it. I am no shaving guru/expert, but I have never had any problems lathering any soap or cream, except this one. FWIW: I kept it in an air tight container.
Just goes to show you can't polish a turd

I just checked this out again and I have to say I think it's pretty sweet that the slim adjustable makes the picture in the shaving article.

I like browsing Ready Made when I am trolling through Barnes and Noble.
Nice article IMO, and I like that they went vintage with the razor instead of using a Futur or something new.

Shaving has nothing to do with ADs.... I blame B&B and it thousands of mambers...
