How would you say Williams compares to regular goo in a can like gillette foam or gel and those types of cream? I've been trying to use up the rest of my Williams and the lather was just horrible. I finally gave up and had to go with some canned Gillette foam that was very thick and protective compared to the Williams lather I'm able to come up with.
My experience is that Williams provides a much more consistent close and comfortable shave with a little experimentation.

I get a very good lather with williams.
Do you have hard water? Do you soak the puck at all before you start?

I've tried everything I can think of with Williams. I've tried soaking the puck. I've tried to getting water on top of the puck. I've tried both of those in combination with a squeezed out brush and a damp brush. To the best of my knowledge I don't have real hard water but to be sure I went out and bought some distilled and it didn't make much of a difference.

Better. That's why I've used it for almost 15 years. I've always just felt that the action of brushing the lather on my face was a better shave prep than smearing canned foam or gel onto my face with my fingers.
I don't know why some guys just can't use it and why I've been a totally satisfied customer. I don't get it. I'll say it again, it did take me a while to "get it right" but once I did, I was pretty much off the cans, so to speak.
I think the best way to put it is this.. you've just got to beat the s**t out of that soap. Man, I remember when I was little, I could hear my dad's shave mug clanking all the way up in my bedroom on the other side of the house.
That was making lather. And I can remember the SOUND that the brush made against his face.. you gotta work that brush. So when I started with a brush and mug soap I just thought of my dad.. and, after some initital fumbling, Williams has always worked great for me..
I wish I could help you more, but the instructions are here in plain sight in a dozen other threads. If you can't get it, then maybe it is the water.. who knows.

what kind of brush do you use. I've always used a cheap boar brush. if yer brush is too soft maybe it's not picking up enough soap ??
just a thought..

I gave VDH and Williams a try. It shaved. It lathered. All in all it was nowhere near the level of many of the more expensive brands, the home made brands, and especially the 3Ts.

I like VDH. You can get it at walmart and rite aid.

Have you tried many other soaps?

Williams works. I think it's better then the standard can of goo. For me, its mostly because of the brush. Then again, I haven't used a brush with the canned goo. (why would I want to do such a blasphemous thing?)

VDH rocks. I got one puck as part of a trade, and love it. The scent rocks (reminds me of Col Conk Bay Rum soap) and it just gives such kick-ass lather. Williams I also like. Just make sure you swirl your brush on the puck more than with other soaps. You just need more with Williams.

williams lathers up real nice for me, i just soak it in ~boiling water for like 30 seconds,
swirl my brush around on it -hard- and then pulling up on pressure as i go, and then i start lathering.
works great,
and my water is so hard, it'd be better off with rocks in it.

I used Williams with a Mach(x) for years. I did use a boar brush that was rather stiff. It was far better than any canned stuff I used, including the more expensive canned stuff.

I'm not having a problem at all with my puck.
maybe you need to shampoo something out of your brush that's interrupting the lathering properties of the williams???????:confused:

Isn't Williams a glyverin soap? Take a look at the glycerin soap tutorial. You really need to load the brush.

It must be very frustrating to so many here at B&B that find Williams soap so hard to lather. Equally as frustrating to those who try to help......and sense the hopelessness of those attempting to lather with it. It does work better then canned foam ! I find that soaking the puck is one key, also lots of swirls , get plenty on the brush and after face lathering with a shaken out brush let the lather stay on your face and brush a few minutes to let the lather thicken! After a few minutes re-lather and you should have it !!! If you need a little water, you shouldn't need much !!! Dripple a few drops from your fingertips. Hope this helps one of you guys anyway and to those it doesn't keep trying , It,s a great soap ! Pete

+1!!!
The best way to lather Williams is directly on the puck instead of loading the brush and moving to a separate bowl.

It just seems like to me even when my brush full of soap, enough to be running up to the handle it still dries out within 30-45 seconds after swirling it on my face, and that after soaking the puck.

+1 right on top with a much wetter brush works for me.

I think van der Hagen's glycerin and deluxe soaps are far better than Williams (though I love William's scent). I have a puck of vdh's select soap, which I have yet to try (supposedly very drying like Williams).
