I find the classic British scents a little to intense for me. What are my alternatives? I really like the old Gap Blue No. 655. Prefer fresh, clean scents or something like Fahrenheit. Where do I begin? Thanks

Fahrenheit smells to me like gasoline and jalapenos, quite spicy. I think you may like Rive Gauche, Terre dHermes, John Varvatos. Perhaps even Ungaro III.
Try Bulgari Aqua.

If you want to try some scents similar to T&H try:
Polo Sport.
Cool Water.
Leau DIssey for men.
eau Sauvage?

Anyway, go sample a few on the counter and then come back to tell us what did you like and what didn't.

Which British scents have you tried - I find the T&H scents less intense or "out there" than the Penhaligons.

Also, is it a matter of how much to apply rather than the intensity of the scents?

Also, if you could let us know what types of scents you like generally, that will help us make specific recommendations - for example, citrus, sweet/dry, oceanic, spice, musk, woodsy, etc...

I've gone through mainly Arlington, TOBS Eton, TOBS Sandalwood.
Prefer oceanic scents, I guess, slight spicey and woody okay, just wanna avoid the Drakkar Noir's nose hair burning effects

Sorry, I misread your original post.
I know this is some sort of blasphemy around here but I am going to recommend you the alternative L'eau D'Issey for men as a cheaper 1805 t&h. Again, try Bulgari Aqua (the Aqua Marine variation is pretty much L'eau D'Issey). Creed Erolfa is the king of marine type scents. Someone will recommend Creeds Millesime Imperial or Green Irish Tweed, you may like them. For more affordable scents I may also list Tommy Bahama Very Cool and Set Sail St. Barts.
Inis has received some love too.

Try T&H Trafalgar and Grafton - both should be in the right range.

Also there are some good Penhaligons and Floris scents out there that you might want to try.

Both companies are pretty good about samples - especially if you can get into a B&M stockist.

I hear you about the Drakkar!

Try Creed's Erolfa or Vetiver 48. You will love 'em.
They are possibly the best "oceanic" or "clean vetiver" scents there are. Erolfa Smells exactly like advertized...The Ocean or "oceanic" and Vetiver 48 is IMHO, The greatest "grassy clean" scent ever invented.
Green Irish Tweed comes to mind also.

No apologies necessary. With your permission, I'd like to use your quote at work whenever they ask me to do something unreasonable. The look on their faces would be classic:

"Smells like poop to me. Sorry boss." Whatcha think?!?!

Back to the topic... try here, www.stjohnswestindies.com (http://www.stjohnswestindies.com). Pricey, but in line with what you pay for classic British scents. I'm getting ready to order more from them and try some out. So far I've only done their bay rum and the cologne Island Spice, which I liked. They have more of an "outdoor" scent; kind of sweet and spicy, that I think you'd like.

Maybe you'd like some of the Chanel scents for men.
