View Full Version : Major Debate...
Gents,
We are having a major debate in the office today....
I grew up in Columbia & Charleston, SC we did not call these things "CUPCAKES".
But for the life of me I can not remember the name or what we called them. I swear that they had a different name, please help.

Ding dongs are also fully chocolate covered and have a more fudgelike consistency to the cake. where as the cupcake has a chocolae icing top with the swirl of white but all cake on the outside

Ding Dongs were also called "King Dons" in some areas of the country.

In the Netherlands we have a similar Candy this goes way back childhood Era
I believe we call them here "NegerZoenen"' roughly translated for you it says
Negro Kisses. I think 4 years ago some lawsuite went against the company if they still call them negerzoenen I have no idea depends if they won or lost the lawsuite.

I miss the days when Ding Dongs were individually wrapped in a thin foil wrapper. I would bet that the ingredients have changed a bit over the years as well.

I believe that "Little Debbies" is a brand of so called "chemical cakes", is it not? I recall seeing several varieties of Little debbies brand "cakes" on a recent trip to Walmart (God, how I hate to shop there).

All this talk of lard cakes has reminded me of an episode of Boston Legal I happened to catch a while back. Some guy had eaten these "lard cakes" all his life and was enlisting the services of the firm to sue the maker of the lard cakes for causing him to be fat. I think he won.
That show is hilarious.

my father used to be one of the machinist at Hostess in St Louis, and he snuck me in one night and I got to watch these being made and the Ding Dongs too.
Speaking of which....one of the guys took a bite out of a ding dong and put it back on the conveyor belt that went into the wrapping....remember they had a foil wrapping...it wound up at the grocery store that my mother worked at in Farmington, MO...the other checker bought a box and there it was !!!! :w00t:

But Shirley Schmidt wonders if he should have been released when he decides to help an obese computer technician sue a junk food manufacturer for causing his diabetes. Denny Crane represents Alan Shore, after Shore is arrested for advising a client accused of attempted murder to flee the county. Meanwhile, after their unexpected rendezvous, Brad Chase wants to explore the possibility of a relationship with Denise Bauer.

You are correct. Little Debbie (http://www.littledebbie.com/) is a brand different from Hostess, and they do make a item similar to the Hostess Cupcake called "Chocolate Cupcakes" (http://www.littledebbie.com/products/ChocCupcakes.asp) although they are not round, but octagonal, as seen here:

BRILLIANT
Our debate has raged most of the day and yet still goes undecided.
I think they are called heart attacks!
When a Texan calls them "heart attacks", that's saying something. I had a meal in Sonny Bryant's in Dallas ten years ago that I'm still full from.
Rene, I meant the ingredients of the cupcakes. I try not to make cakes too often, I like them too much.
Now about the name. After my first answer of 'chemical cakes' I thought about this and I am almost positive they were called something else. I cannot think of the name either (part-timer's?). They were childhood favorites along with Twinkies, Snowballs and Banana Flips.
Ahhh.... school lunches with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a bruised apple and a cake treat of some kind to have with the lukewarm milk in my thermos. All of this food tucked into my Davy Crockett lunchbox. I was probably the only girl with a Davy Crockett lunchbox. Heh, that was my favorite TV show!
Now Tito since you dragged me back to schooldays, which led to think of school lunches and the cakes; that reminded me of my Davy Crockett lunchbox and then the TV show! The problem you caused is I remembered the dang song and it is on replay.
So Tito, If you are old enough to remember the TV show, I'll bet you know the music to these inspirational lyrics :)
Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier. Born on a mountain top in Tennessee, greenest state in the land of free....raised in the woods so he knew every tree, killed him a bear when he was only three. aarrrggggggg..
Sue
Sue,
Oh my stars do I remember. I used to stomp around the house in my coon skin hat driving my folks bananas singing that tune over, and over, and over.
Tito,
I had the hat too! My brother ruined it. I think I had to beat him up for that. :)

Twinkies, Snowballs and Banana Flips. Okay, I am not familiar with Banana Flips but the rest Cupcakes, Twinkies, and Snowballs... Well, lets just say I've never really been able to stand them. They are way too sweet and the only flavor I get from them is sugar. Ughh, too sweet.
