View Full Version : There is NOTHING better than Osage Rub.

IN MY OPINION, and IT IS MY FIRM BELIEF!!
I'll tell you this right now, anyone who uses an after shave should try Osage Rub. There is no finer product on the market! The supple feel that the skin will experience in the post application stage is unmatched!! The mentholated ass kicking that your face will receive upon application can only be described as amazing.
Osage Rub is a product that has withstood the test of time and leaves all other mentholated after shave products in the dust!! If you're a dare devil, try using a splash of this bad boy on a cold winters morning up in New England! A little splash of this liquid nitrogen on your face before walking out in to the crisp cool air of a December morning in Attleboro, Vermont will wake your slap happy ass up so quick you'll be looking for a chisel to peck the icicles off your facial region.
Conversely, if you're dismayed by the thought of going outside on warm humid morning in the deepest regions of the Southern Georgia outback, throw a dash of this green beast on your face and you wouldn't know what humidity was if you tripped over it. This liquid ass kicker will leave your face feeling like you just slept in a Coors Light refrigerated truck for seven hours. Osage Rub will make you tolerate living in the deepest, darkest regions of the Louisiana Bayou in spite of its disgusting and offensive humidity. Try this stuff on for size and the gut wrenching humidity of a trailor park off of a dirt road in the woods of Alabama will be a delight to your facial muscles!!
Osage Rub.....if you don't like this stuff, there's something wrong with you!!
Try this Green Monster and see what menthol is all about!!!
While it does have a lot of menthol in it, I think touting this as "the best" and that "nothing is better" is asinine.
It smells mediocre at best, isn't great for razor burn, isn't that great for your face (skincare wise) and leaves much to be desired.
If you're a "menthol head" buy some menthol crystals, smash them up - and mix it into Aqua Velva, Skin Bracer, Musgo, Speick, Floid or any of the dozens of aftershaves that are more efficacious and smell much better than Osage Rub.

asinine? i think that is a bit unfair and harsh. i think your comment was more "asinine" than claiming something is the best. this is the 2nd time i've seen you get a little touchy about someone claiming a product to be the "best". relax.

When someone posts something is "the best" often people will purchase that product to experience "the best." This user posted once in december, then hadn't posted again until today - whereby he posted 7 times (look at his posts) most of which proclaiming something is "the best" such as Col Conk soap which is simply isn't true. While it may be "the best" for him, again remember this is a site by which A LOT of people come for quality information, and a good portion of these individuals are newbies.
Have you tried Osage Rub? If you have, and you feel it is ANYWHERE near "the best" or even in the top 10, I'll gladly eat my shoe and apologize. Personally, I have tried it, I have recommended it for people on a menthol kick, and I have seen dozens of individuals provide feedback on it - and not once has anyone (other than a fella with 1 post aside from today) felt it was "the best."

I like Osage Rub. In fact, I like it a lot, but it really doesn't do much for my skin or smell very good. It does provide a menthol smack in the face I can appreciate. For the price, everyone who likes menthol should have a bottle.
If I had to choose between Osage Rub and Aqua Velva, I would take tha latter. It just smells better for 15 minutes.

Joel is the NBK of these forums, fierce defender from the ignorance of noobs and protector of correct knowledge.
Seriously though, I agree with him. Nothing wrong with personal preference, but proclaiming something to be that isn't confuses new members and could set them down strange paths.

who knew!! I certainly didn't realize that quantity of posts translates into knowledge!!
But, since SOMEONE has WAY too much time on their hands (does someone REALLY check a persons post history subsequent to reading a post) I'll regress and edit my post to read: IN MY OPINION!!!!
So, now that I have EIGHT posts, does that make me a little more knowledgeable than when I had SEVEN posts?
Oh, and FYI: I'm 73 years old, and have owned my own barber shop since 1962. I think I know a thing or two about after shave products that may, effectively, equal a post count much higher than eight.
And all this time I never know that a persons knowledge was based on their post count! hmmmmm...interesting!

While I can appreciate opinion, I think "best" needs clarification when speaking of an aftershave (ie: the best at what?)
We use aftershaves for numerous reasons; it is not simply cologne for the face, nor is it just cold liquid w/ no other benefits.
It is used to soothe, to moisturize, to calm, to tone, to soften or firm, to cool or to warm.
At which of these is Osage the best?
It may be the best menthol slap it in the face, but does it moisturize?
And I don't say this as to question your opinion, but as a request for clarification for those of us who have not, and due to numerous other (mostly negative) opinions, might not, ever use it.

That's interesting, because your computer information resolves back to a section of the federal government, not to a barbershop. It's also interesting because your computer information is directly tied to one of B&B's most buffoonish trolls who has re-registered well over half a dozen times. Just an FYI...

Joel has been around for a while, so I'd say he notices when a name he hasn't seen recently posts in a slew of threads. Also, if he's prosperous enough to have time to spend all day on a shaving forum, that's his business, not yours.
Also, no claims were made about knowledge being related to post count, however posting once several months ago and then posting a lot today is definitely a non typical posting trend. I'm a good example of posts being greater than knowledge. I have more posts than many more senior members, but don't claim to know more than them because of my post count. While I talk a lot, I am still a noob to wetshaving with much less experience than many other less chatty members.
However, what brought you into question was the item you are describing as the best. Many members, such as Joel, have tried dozens of aftershave products, and their general consensus is that said item wasn't near as high on the totem pole as you claimed. Said members are respected not for large post counts, but for the quality of information they bring to the board.
I hope that clears some things up for you, and I hope you continue on to an enjoyable experience on these forums.
Edit: Grrr, I hate it when new knowledge comes to light while I am working on a post.

joel, i understand where you are coming from and i know you have been around and know alot about many products. i just chimed in because i've seen alot of newcomers get hammered for being ill-informed or naive about products. i think everyone should stay courteous and remember the golden rule. oh.......and you can save your shoes for next time, i dont think it's the best.

Its not about being hammered for being ill-informed or naive, its about being hammered for making outrageous claims about a product that is very average at best.
As Joel said, there are tons of newbies on the site and they read recommendations and reviews without the benefit of personal experience. I'd hate a bunch of newbies to read a glowing post about Conk soaps, Osage or other products and assume that they're king of the hill. I'm not knocking either Conk or Osage, just saying that, while these are decent, old-school products that represent good value for the cash, there are MUCH better products out there - in many cases for not much more money either.
Its one thing to say "I think this stuff is the bomb", quite another to say that product X is "The best".
When talking about products, especially when making qualitative comments, its important to consider the experience of/number of products tired by the person making the comments.
Just my $0.02.

A round of applause for the federal employee wasting tax payer money!
Wooohooo, I love watching my government work...
Aw, come on guys! There cannot be any 73-year-old federal employee.
What civil servant's gonna hang around that long?
And have figgered out the innerwebtubes?
As to Osage Rub, it sounds like something you'd do to a pork butt before smoking it. Not to imply anything. Just saying.

Point of order: Even though the product is called Osage "Rub", it is in fact a liquid; if it were used on a pork butt prior to smoking it would be a "brine" as opposed to a "rub".

This is bizarre...
I've been wetshaving for about two years, and as much as I try and tell myself I know it all, I'm really clueless when it comes to it. Right now, I'm going through the stage of trying everything out to figure out what my "go to" stuff is.
This was from his first post in December. I am sure that he started a barber shop in his free time since then, and works on secret missions for the federal government, you may now disappear for revealing his secrets. At his barber shop, he has every soap and aftershave available, which enables him to make stern statements, telling us what is best. Come on guys, why don't you trust him?

Re-registered six times? This is a shaving site, for goodness sake. A place to show up and have a bit of fun, chill and have a laugh.
If this is true, somebody needs more than to just smell the Osage Rub; they need to get a life.

Osage Rub ain't bad but if you really want to try a menthol/ minty aftershave, try Mama Bears Peppermint summer aftershave. The strength rivals osage, the staying power beats it and you get a pleasant peppermint fragrance. Really soothes the skin too. In the summertime, chill the aftershave in the 'fridge for a real blast! :tongue_smIf you don't mind smelling like a peppermint stick till about afternoon, Mama Bears is the one to try.

I was going to do this, but was worried that I wouldn't know what I was doing. Is it possible to overdo it (health- and safety-wise), or would I just smash some up and throw them in?

If you like Menth check out the Hooka thread, lots of folks contributing to that discussion.
OK, at the risk of getting this thread back on track: To summarize, Some gent who has perhaps less credibility what you would grant the average B&B newcomber has suggested that Osage Rub is the greatest thing since badger was first skinned, knotted and applied to face.
I think some of the other "meth bomb" products are : Baxters, Proraso Pre/Post and I'm not sure if Mama Brears came up in this thread yet.

I do think protecting newbs is good, but I also think we can probably trust most newbs to be obsessive like the rest of us and read up on the various reviews and forums describing a particular product and not be overly impressed by one post that is obviously on its face over the top. That's only my 2 cents.
But then, I want to ralph every time someone says Proraso is anything but garbage because to me anyone that thinks that Proraso is good is nuts, but I know many people totally disagree with me and are sincere about their adoration for the stuff, so I wouldn't be too harsh on posters with an eclectic enthusiasm here or there. But just rather post a reply saying many would disagree (like I do everytime I read that someone thinks TOBS soaps are any good - pet peeve).
