For about a month now I have been taking cod liver pills at night before bed. I was recomended this by a lady that works at a whole foods type store for my dry hair. I was skeptical at first but for $5 why not.....any way, I have noticed a preety dramatic difference in the quality of my hair since. If any one has dry hair and does not want to spend a fortune on high dollar conditioners this is the way to go.

Interesting - I found this post and was going to write the same thing.
Yes - I have found it works well - also helps dry skin.

Works maybe too well on the hair. I need a shampoo that has no conditioner in it. Just something that cleans very well. Anyone have any suggestions?

It also improves your skin.

I remember the horror stories from when I was a kid about cod liver oil. I think I could handle it in pill form. I'd like to improve my dry skin and it doesn't sound expensive. Thanks for the tip.

I had a similar experience as child. It was suggested that I take cod liver oil as a dietary supplement. Every night I was given a tablespoon of that nasty substance.
I wish I had the pills.

Try Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil (https://www.nordicnaturals.com/direct/prodsummary.asp?ID=8) available at Whole Foods and VitaminShoppe. No fish taste.

Due to my dry skin it was recommended to me I take fish oil as I don't eat fish. I take a pharaceutical quality fish oil which means the fishy taste has been filtered out. The difference has been amazing, my skin is a lot less dry & my hair as well.
Additionally it's a natural anti inflammatory, so my back pains & my various soft tissue strains & sprains are diminished as well. Now this stuff ain't cheap ($40 for 500ml) but I only take a table spoon a day so a bottle lasts me 2-3 months at least. I once dropped some on the tile floor in the kitchen & the bottle shattered. It was near impossible to clear this thick gooey oily stuff off the floor, my wife nearly killed me!

Anyone ever try USANA BiOmega? Very good stuff.

This product is superior to other concentrates. Not only is BiOmega USP verified, USANA uses a double molecular distillation process that ensures the highest possible purity, unsurpassed in the industry. This revolutionary process removes mercury, PCBs, pesticides, and other heavy metals.

Just chiming in with a +1 for fish oil. My dog has severe skin allergies and as recommended by our vet, we have her on a fish oil pill regimen. I may be dipping into her stash come winter. (We give her the OTC stuff for humans as the "pet" versions are the same thing with a rediculous markup).

That is all.

There are lots of different types of antihypertensives that all work at different receptors and sites in the body. Some natural products do interfere with medications (for example grapefruit juice and warfarin.) I've not heard of cod liver oil and antihypertensives before though. Can you share some more information please?

The best is to find a fish oil that contains at least 1000mg of EPA/DHA combined per dose. Cod liver oil, flaxseed, fish oil, whatever omega 3 will be good...but if you want the best the pharmaceutical grade fish oil with HIGH EPA/DHA concentrations are best.

A guy I used to work with was on a health kick, and was taking Cod Liver Oil capsules because he had heard they were good for your health (as no doubt, they are).

He was on medication for high blood pressure (have no idea what meds) and came into work one day looking very drawn & colourless. His boss sent him to the plant nurse, who couldn't find a pulse!!!!:scared:

She had him rushed to the Emergency Room by ambulance, where he stayed for 3 days. Docs & nurses there asked what meds he was on, yaddayadda, and he neglected to tell them he was taking the Oil. They didn't know until one of the Orderlys saw the bottle on his bedside table and happened to mention it to his doctor, who told him to stop taking it immediately.

I think the health of existing.

I've been told Rogaine helps grow hair.

My understanding is the pharmaceutical formulations are OK if there is a severe nutritionl deficiency.

Since Cod Liver oil also contains Vitamin A & D which are both fat soluble, it is possible to overdose (unlike the water soluble vitamins where you would just urinate out any excess that your body does not need).

I thought my father was the only madman making his kids take cod liver oil. Glad to see I am not alone. The liquid form is really quite horrendous...I still have nightmares about the taste of the stuff (in fact, I am suppressing the gag reflex right now)! :(

I, too, have very vivid memories of the thick white goop from the bottle. For anyone in Canada, Buckley's Mixture is a delight compared to liquid cod liver oil! As I recall the bottle was brown and the label had a fisherman with a large fish slung over his shoulder.

I've taken the capsules for years now. Basically they're the only vitamin/health pill I take.

You can get all the omega-3’s you need from almonds or walnuts, plus your eating something that has not been altered in a factory.

If you take cod and process it down to pills or oil, you really don’t know what your getting, and guess what the manufacturer does not know either. Quality control varies a lot in the supplement world, one pill may contain almost no active ingredient and another may contain 5x the amount you believe your are taking.

Recent medical research has concluded that no one under the age of 70 and without a proven deficiency should take ANY supplement other than calcium\vit D combo. In fact, some vitamin supplements have been shown to be harmful and reduce life span!

Take home message, get your vitamins and omega-3’s from natural unprocessed sources: flax seed, olive oil, almonds, walnuts, green vegetables, etc.

Bee pollen and cod livers packed into a pill are not natural!

I thought they just got some livers from a bunch of cod and squeezed the oil out. Then they pack the oil into little pills. It doesn't seem like there's much processing involved.

This is the preferable method of obtaining nutrients. One catch is the nutritional content of any food depends on the quality of the soil it was grown in as well as the fertilizers used. Petrochemical based fertilizers may have the Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium necessary to make a fruit or vegetable grow, but they are usually short on some minerals. Most foods are grown today using pesticides which will also be ingested.

Actually plant sources of omega 3s are quite poor compared to animal. Better off eating fish.

Actually plant sources of omega 3s are quite poor compared to animal. Better off eating fish.

Fish cannot make omega 3’s just like humans cannot make them. The omega 3’s found in fish come from the algae (A PLANT) that fish eat.

There is absolutely no difference in quality of omega 3’s found in plants and that found in animals (which comes from the plants animals eat). Now, there might be a difference in QUANTITY of Omega 3’s found in one source vs. another.

ALA, DHA, and EPA are the same whether you find them in the dirt, a plant, or outer space. These molecules have a specific structure, a specific number, and type of atoms. If you make one little change in the molecule then it becomes a different molecule. So, it doesn’t matter where you source these Omega 3’s, they are equivalent.
