Morning Gents,
I've been DE shaving for about a year now and I just started Straight shaving but my problem is this:

It seems that no matter what I do, my skin feels dried out when I am doing my 3rd pass (ATG). I can get very smooth going with and across but my beard just feels rough, tough, and dry going against.

I would love comments. My usual routine is this: soak face with hot towel for 2-3 minutes, then Proraso pre-shave cream while I am building lather. I just started using Taylor of Old Bond St. Avocado (in a new Moss Scuttle I might add, Love it!). Then 3 passes with a hot water rinse in between each lathering. Then alum block and then JASON organic aloe after shave. Any suggestions?

Drop the Alum & replace with E45 lotion for a few days?

Have you tried rubbing in some of the Proraso pre/post in before your last pass?

I found that proper moisturizing my skin is crucial for a decently irritation-free shave. To that end I have switched from soaps and creams to gels, because soaps and creams are simply too harsh and drying for me. You don't have to abandon your creams, but you could try improving on your moisturization. For example, before you apply the first lather, saturate your skin with a lotion containing aloe vera and glycerin. Trumper's Coral Skin Food works well for that. Certain shave gels also work great. You could do this even between passes if it helps.

Get some 100% raw unrefined Shea butter. It's the best moisterizer you will find and cheap compared to all those labeled products. You can find tons of information about the benefits of Shea butter if you google it. Here's (http://ezinearticles.com/?Shaving-With-Shea-Butter&id=729356) just a brief info in regards to shaving.

I have the same problem as you but I am not using Proraso. I have started soaking my face between passes. Also I am finding that I must pay more attention to the shave cream because by the 3rd pass the cream, in my Moss Scuttle, is quite dry. My solution has been to moisten the brush a little bit , with water from the faucet, and then apply the cream to my face. This seems to help me a lot. It might work for you.

I don't know anything about Proraso Pre/Post, but I know the shaving cream has menthol in it, which can dry out your skin. If the pre/post has that as well, that could be part of the problem.

Another problem could be that you're splashing your face with hot water between passes. Maybe you should go with warm water instead.

The alum block is another thing that would dry out your skin.

It could be all of these things combined or just of them. I'd experiment and find out what you're willing to give up (if any of them).
