For all the photographer's out there in B&B land How about posting your personal best photo to date... I don't have a digital camera, but I have a lot of photos on CD's as soon as I can track mine down, I'll edit this post. The idea is to post the picture you're proudest of. If this has been done here before, somebody just wag your finger at me and point me to the thread. If not maybe we could make it an annual event. :001_smile
This shot was taken on Easter 2003 at the Jewel box in Forest Park. The camera, a Canon EOS Rebel Ti with a Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 Zoom lens and a skylight filter.
The reason I picked this picture is that it surprised me. I had just gotten the camera, and was really only playing around with it, trying to figure it out. It is my first SLR. This was a candid shot, my daughter was looking out over the fountain with her back to me. I called her name and shot the pic just as she turned around. She didn't have any idea she was going to get her picture taken so it wasn't posed at all.

A great idea for a thread!
I'm going to break the rules already and pick two, one human-interest, the other not. :)
The first is, of course, the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. What makes this photograph great (for me) is that you're not allowed to take photographs in the chapel. If the guards see someone raise a camera, they barge through the perpetually-crowded room, grab the person, and escort them out of the chapel. I can understand that flash photography could damage the breathtaking painting, but I felt a flashless shot was justifiable, particularly seeing as I'd just bought the official photography album (perhaps why they don't want you taking your own photos).
What makes this photo for me is that it was taken "shooting from the hip", I had my arm down at my waist, just randomly pointed the camera upwards, and clicked the shutter. I quickly returned the camera to my pocket, unsure what the photograph was like until we left and I could examine the camera. It turns out that my random shot actually looks rather good, fairly well-composed, and has none of the (very dense) crowd of people showing. Not bad for a random upshot without looking through the lens!
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t24/HobbesOxon/2005-01-07-04.jpg
The second is a shot of my good lady just after we had met, one year before our marriage. The photo both has sentimental value to me, and is a fairly decently-taken portrait (I like to think!), taken in a pretty location (Oxford's 500-year-old Turf Tavern, a fine pub)...

They're both good pictures, but I love the one of the Sistine Chapel. If you didn't tell me it was taken covertly I would have walked away thinking you were deliberately going for that effect.
I'll have to post my favorite when I get home from work.

Two which I am particularly fond of.
The first is nearly too eerie to submit. It is from the Sedlec Ossuary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedlec_Ossuary) in Kutna Hora, a few hours outside of Prague.

The second is of NYC taken from Long Island City on 12/31/2006.

Here are three of my favorites from last year.
1. Hiking path, Tilden Park Berkeley, CA

2. Bird, San Diego, CA
f/2.8, 1/4000, ISO100, 100mm lens

I often do the same thing in places that don't allow pictures. High ISO speed, flashless, uncomposed shots. The results are often quite pleasing.
All great shots.

Here is one taken by my wife. It was taken at Shaw's (The Missouri Botanical) Garden with a Canon Sure Shot 60 Zoom The lens on this P&S is a 38-60mm f/4.5-6.7. It was composed by her sister on a family trip to the garden. It's my third son and my daughter. Kinda reminds me of a Normal Rockwell. Some of these point & shoot cameras can take really great pictures.
I can't attach the file. I guess it's too big or I'm out of space, I don't know which. I'll look into it. For now I've put it up on google's picasa. Sorry about the extra click required.

This is not a great piece of photography, but it's one of my favorites anyway. I was under the waterfall when I saw the monk with the camera. I managed to swim across the rock pool, get out, dash over to my bag, open it, fire up the camera and take the photo just before he walked off.

This is an old pictures that I took with my dad's old Canon 35mm.
I simply love it because it happens to be my dad and my little brother. My dad re-married and had another kid, in case you were wondering (and I'm only 20.)
It's just a "cute" picture I reckon, plus I love my little brother to pieces.

I guess I'll have to go with this one for now. I took it on a beach in the Netherlands when it was right around freezing, the equivalent of your pee freezing instantly in Canada. Lovely place named Scheveningen, a Dutch person can correct my spelling if they need to, the only place "a few mussels" is literally a bucket without the shells. You can also bungee jump on the beach. A little west of this sand sculpture there's a tower for it.

I really like (probably not personal best but) this picture I took of the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park last July.
It looks like it's nobody around but us, the rain and the birds swimming.
Compared to the more advanced setups here, this is only a N95. F/2.8, 0.002 sec. 1/500 and ISO 100.

The butterfly was shot with my D80 and Sigma 105 f2.8 macro lens. I held the flashgun under the leaf that the butterfly was sitting on and used the pop up camera flash for some top fill. I converted to Cyanotype in Adobe lightroom and sharpened slightly.
Not difficult really, the hard part was seeing the image waiting for me to capture it. There is a butterfly conservatory near where I live and I go every few months. I have an image in the 2007 calendar for them, and now that I think of it, missed submissions for this year. Oops.
The Golden Retreiver was a happy coincidence, and some heavy Photoshop work. :)

I wonder how a horn-handled raccoon brush would work out!
The raccoon was imaged with my D80 and a Sigma 70-300 macro II lens which was at 300mm. I was lying on my stomach on my neighbours lawn, and the sun was just peaking over the houses to my camera right. Auto white balance, might have been in RAW but most likely JPEG fine for speed. ISO was probably set at 100 and aperture would have been around f5.6 as this was not a fast lens. Had good reach but it was so slow racked out to 300mm that my images were usually pretty bad. Thus the change to a 80-200 f2.8, nothing beats fast glass.
The little critter was just kinda sitting there looking stunned, actually I thought that it had been poisoned as it was sitting there for about an hour, in daylight. The animal control officers came and it took off like a shot.
I probably got about 40 great images of the little critter.
The Rhino's were imaged at African Lion Safari this past summer. I did some PS work on them to bring the saturation and contrast up. They really look good in black and white as well.
I have to find some of the Elephant images I took and post process them. Then I can get them up here. I also have some nice ones of the Cheetah's at the Toronto Zoo, as well as the Tigers there.
BTW, I think that the bucket image was straight out of Camera, shot with a 50mm f1.8 prime. I don't think that there was any post process done on that one. Maybe a touch of USM, but not much. Oh, and the raccoon was also SOOC (straight out of camera)
Cheers,
Sean

The raccoon was imaged with my D80 and a Sigma 70-300 macro II lens which was at 300mm. I was lying on my stomach on my neighbours lawn, and the sun was just peaking over the houses to my camera right. Auto white balance, might have been in RAW but most likely JPEG fine for speed. ISO was probably set at 100 and aperture would have been around f5.6 as this was not a fast lens. Had good reach but it was so slow racked out to 300mm that my images were usually pretty bad. Thus the change to a 80-200 f2.8, nothing beats fast glass.
Great stuff, thanks for the notes, Sean. I can visualise you facing-off against the raccoon, lying in the grass, while it stared down the barrel of your 300mm... :001_smile

I have most of my good pictures on film, which aren't scanned into the computer. I got a Canon Powershot G9 for Christmas so I've been taking some decent pictures.
Here is one of the better pictures from this Friday of my roomate's band (Picture Me Free (http://picturemefree.com/)) You can see the rest of my pictures on their site under "Pics".

Yeah, it wasn't quite face to face, but more like whiskers to whiskers LOL! Actually he was about 15 yards away from me in this photo. If he looked a little healthier I might have tried to sneak in closer, but I am not as fast as I once was, so I wanted to have some room if he decided that I was too close. Lots of rabies in coons around here so better safe than sorry.
More images to come, anyone like fountain pens??

Taken on Sept 20, 2007 across the street from Princess Juliana Airport, on the island of St. Maarten, located in the northern Caribbean, east of Puerto Rico. This is Maho Beach, and is highly recommended if you are an aviation nut like myself. Dont worry the planes aren't coming in all the time like this, some are much lower . In the hours between landings enjoy the seclusion of the beach (less than 8 people including us showed up in the 4 hours we were there), but when you see that silver glint in the air off in the distance, it's time to bring out the cameras because it's over with pretty fast.

Yeah, I love astrophotography and night photography! I have quite a few lunar shots though a 90mm Mak-Cass telescope. I've also done some planetary work. A lot of my astro photos were lost when I have some CDs go bad. Learned a hard lesson there. The moon shot above was with my Nikon D80 and a Nikkor 70-300mm VR hand held. I was a bit shocked that it did so well.
You should connect your camera to that scope! I have an 8" Dob but it is very difficult to get anything decent with a camera. I would love to have a tracking scope like a Schmidt-Cass.
Here is one of my favorite Jupiter shots that I took with a ETX-90 and a 2mp camera:

Wow! Great site ablessg, and great shot of Jupiter.
Thanks for the info, and the encouragement. As soon as I get some spare time I'll have to buy an adaptor and try some photos. Unfortunately I live right in downtown Toronto, so there is no night sky to look at here. But once I move (or vacation up north) I'll have to try.

Just to the left of that fountain is a round tile about the size of a manhole cover. Did you stand on that and view the columns? It is very cool as it is the only place that allows all the columns behind the first row to be completely hidden and in perfect alignment with this spot as though there were only one row.

Now that is a cool shot, even with the barricades. I am amazed at how you got the whole place to yourself. With that kind of clout one would think that you could have gotten the Pope himself to move those barricades. Of course this shot is best appreciated after seeing the other one first.

I liked the slightly blurred effect of the cars and thought that due to the movement involved it had to be a single raw shot as opposed to multiple exposures. The effect is much the same and definitely works in your shot though.

While I was waiting to capture a colorful sunset on the
Knik River, one that never really developed, a little girl came
down to the water's edge to play. I hurriedly composed and
captured this one shot and the moment was gone. When
she heard the shutter trip, she thought she was in the way
and ran back to her family.

This little waterfall sits a few yards off a dirt road leading to the

This is an awesome collection of photos you fellas have posted. Here are a couple that I like from last summer. The first one I took through the windshield while driving to my great-grandparents home in WV. The other picture is of the top of one of the Gettysburg battle fields many monuments. I used imagezone to do the SE on the Gettysburg shot.

Nice Pic!! Remember to pinch down your barbs, though! Accidents can happen in canoes, and if your daughter gets stuck, it will still be a nice father daughter moment, but it might not be if the barb were still on. For the same reason, your daughter should be wearing sunglasses.
You all impress me. I am not much of a photographer, but Alaska makes it easy

Perhaps this one. I like others that I've taken, but somehow I keep coming back to this one. The flower was about 3/4 of an inch long or so. I used a film camera and a bellows unit that looks like something from 100 years ago. This is a scan of a print and so the quality is not as good as it otherwise would be.

My understanding of the reason you're not allowed to photograph it is that Nikon paid for a good part of the restoration in exchange for the photography rights.

This is the best one I've actually put online.
I'm not a big fan of posting the exif data, but I do it on Flickr. My feed is here: http://flickr.com/photos/brofkand/ . When someone asks me, "What camera did you use?" I say, "A $1 camera." And the truth is most of my color film stuff does come from a dollar store camera. It's very similar to a Holga. If you have a Dollar Tree in your area, I recommend picking one up. If your Dollar Tree sells the cameras with the hot shoe, PM me because mine doesn't.
As I have stated before, photography is very much art and science. You must possess both disciplines in the right mixture to produce what many people consider to be "good photography."

I used to spend a lot of time in the darkroom. I'm missing my favorite film camera a lot since it and the rest of my gear was stolen from me a while back. I haven't been investing much into photography since then. I have managed to pick up a small inexpensive digital to travel with though. The photographic quality and versatility is not on par with my origional equipment. The trade off is for ease and unobtrusiveness. There are some shots I return to look at every now and then with this simple clicker. Here are a couple I like from a recent trip to Bali, Indonesia..
