View Full Version : Hello
Hi
My name is Rupert, I live in the UK and came across this site last night.
I'd like to get into (real) wet shavings but it's all new to me. I had no idea there were so many different things to consider, the razor, the blade.. different types of soap!
I guess I need some help and advce.
After years of using rubbish disposable razors (the number of blades only increases the discomfort), gels and foams, I know it's time to learn the art of a propper shave. I have quite a coarse beard but I'm blessed/cursed with baby soft skin.
With this in mind, what would be a good starter kit (razor, baldes, brush and soap)? Although I have a disposable income, I'm not looking to deplete my savings.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome.
You will find a lot of discussion threads here. It is best to just jump in.
There are also some great videos on You Tube from Mantic59. There are many videos that show all. These were my favorite resource when I started using a DE a couple of months ago.

Welcome. I would suggest you start with a Merkur HD (available from several sites) and a blade sampler from West Coast Shaving. It is good to have you here.

If I were you I would head to the Reviews. Look for people commenting that they also have very soft skin and what they have to say about X product. What ever equipment you pick to start out make sure you don't change it around too much at first. Your blade technique will matter more than anything else and constantly switching equipment makes it a lot harder to recognize how you need to change your technique. Good luck and welcome.
Yep, take DEmac's advice:yesnod: ...do your homework and stick with your first choices for a month or two. then you will really notice a difference and you can judge if this is for you or not (it will be)! Order yourself up a Merkur HD (for that coarse beard you mentioned) with Derby blades, some well respected shave cream or soap that is not too expensive (may I suggest Proraso, lol), and a middle-of-the-road badger hair brush (Vulfix, maybe?). Read up on technique in the DE forum here and you will be glad you did it all. Welcome to wetshaving!

For a brush you can't go wrong with a C&E Best Badger Brush.
Thanks for all the advice guys.. My journey starts here.

Bert, Welcome!
Where are you in the UK? You might find you have access to some shops that carry products for traditional shaving right in your home town.

Hi Rupert. You can get started with a very modest amount of money. The most expensive thing would be your brush then probably your handle. I'd get a decent brush and handle to start your experience off right. From there you can explore other stuff, but you'll have the basics that will last forever. There is just the initial investment. I've been shaving with a DE for a few years now and the only thing I buy now is more cream and different soaps. I've been satisfied with my HD, blades, and brush the whole time.
So it can be very cost effective. After a while it'll turn into a hobby and you won't notice how much you spend anymore.
